Morning, ebe.
Also, PaulSimonon, that is because it happens all the time there. Here, we receive snow once ever few winters, and then everyone is just crashing into each other and whatnot. It drives me absolutely bonkers.
You don't get much snow because of your proximity to the ocean? |
I would have to drive to the mountains in the dead of winter to even see a light smattering of snow.
Ah, the joys of the Southern Hemisphere
Lucky. You, generally, have to go up into the mountains to see any snow normally. One of the ski places over here even generates their own snow when there isn't much of it. |

I would prefer to be hot allowing me take off my shirt and trousers just to cool off. Granted, you do feel gross when sweaty, but I hate being cold. And, with me being really thin, I become cold easily, but, when it is hot outside, I don't really start sweating until the temperature is like 35 Celsius up. |

i noticed they have jazz's now, GB99B and GB99F b for burl top and f for flamed maple. GB94 is a helluva bass though, im thinking i really wish i had one instead of a 34 :p but still i'm getting an artisan b4fl before anything else.. maybe when i graduate i'll buy myself an A4 or a 94. or some huge ****ing amp. :smash: |

And the swamp ash and wenge & maple neck really add to the tone. The electronics let it down a little, I am not so fond ofthe Barts, but they do work for fretless. I am actually wanting a 6er at the moment and was checking out a older TRB, but the neck is just too wide, so maybe an A6 is in order with a Aguilar preamp and some new pickups. |

oh, and what strings do you use on that thing?
i'm thinking i could go with some flats but they suck. is the fingerboard hardy? |

Amps/Cabs I would not touch: - Anything Ashdown - Aguilar AG500 |
oh, and what strings do you use on that thing?
i'm thinking i could go with some flats but they suck. is the fingerboard hardy?
The fingerboard is unfinished indian rosewood. I am currently using D'Addario Chromes on it and there is no wear that I can see. It ships with roundwounds which is abit silly but I imagine for cost friendly, but I took those off immediately, they chew up the fingerboard pretty badly. Stick with flats and it will last you a lifetime. Also it pretty much defeats the purpose of a fretless sound if you string it up with rounds. |

I.e. Cab 1 = 8 Ohms (500W) Cab 2 = 8 Ohms (500W) Cab 1 + Cab 2 (running in parallel) = 1000W @ 4 Ohms 600W Head @ 4 Ohms means that each cab will be getting 300W @ 4 Ohms from the Head which should be fine. Obviously don't do the stupid thing and run everything on full, otherwise you will be introduced to the wonderful world of clipping :p |

D'Addario Chromes are generally available the world over, they are one of the more common flatwound strings. Worst case scenario, you order up a few packs online. I still have the same set on my fretless since March I think and the suckers are still pushing the same tone now that they did then. Great strings the chromes. |

and will my 450w head provide enough to two 500w cabs? doesn't seem like it :(
450W will power two cabs of 500W, you just can't push them. Best bet is to try and match the Amp power to the cab power, you can actually have a slightly more powerful amp but again just don't drive the speakers too hard. 600W should be fine, but 800W or a 1000W would be better. Hence enter the Preamp and poweramp combo. Personally all I would want would be the Eden 2X10XST cab paired with the Eden WT550 head. 500W should be more than enough for most people. And more and you should strictly speaking be going through the PA system. Right, I have a meeting now so I will catch you later. |
mmkay, later

Er... Roundwounds defeat the purpose of the fretless sound? Since when? The main fretless sound popularised by Jaco used rounds. They give far more warmth and growl to their sound than flats. I hear there are some flats out there that can still get that lovely growl sound though. Flats in general sound so much duller in tone than rounds.

Rounds don't make nearly as much damage as most people think, at least as long as your not slapping it. They will form little barely visible marks but they don't have an effect on your sound or dig in that much. Nylon coated rounds or other types of coated rounds like Elixirs will be gentler on your fretboard and give you that classic fretless sound. If in doubt, get the fretboard coated with a thin layer of lacquer, that will help a lot. I've been using rounds which are not coated on an untreated fretboard for about three years and the damage is minimal, doesn't affect the sound or feel at all. Basically there is a huge paranoia on fretboard damage that is really just that, huge paranoia. You will make tiny grooves but it won't make your bass unplayable and after many many years if it is giving you any grief you can sand the fretboard down a little and have many more years of life. But by then, aren't you likely to have stepped up to far more expensive models with stronger fretboards anyway? So go for whatever rounds you like. |

I am going on the factthatthe majority of fretted players will be using rounds of one sort or another and that fretless players would be using flats for the most part. From what I have actually heard with rounds on a fretless, you are esentially getting a fretted type tone, which for me pretty much negates having a fretless. I assume one purchases a fretless to get more of that fretless sound, not a fretted sound on a bass without frets. Don't get me wrong, a fretless with rounds does sound good, but if I want that sound I would play my fretted bass. I bought my fretless becasue I wanted a completely different sound and by stringing it up with flats, that is what I have gotten, plus no matter how small the little ridges on the fretboard are from the rounds, they still bug me. I like the wood to be unmarked and able to show of its detail. |
Most of the fretlesses I see in stores near me come strung with rounds from the factory... Even the ones without much coating on the fingerboard.
|
Most of the fretlesses I see in stores near me come strung with rounds from the factory... Even the ones without much coating on the fingerboard.
The reason for that is the cost of strings. An "okay" set of rounds are a hell of a lot cheaper than an "okay" set of flats. So it makes financial sense to ship them with rounds so that a basic set of strings is there to have tension on the neck. Look at it this way, if you could save US$10 per bass you ship by putting on rounds instead of flats, and you ship 1000 basses, thats US$10 000 right there. And of course the likes of Cort are shipping several thousand basses every day. |
hmmm, i dunno, ill figure it out later.
i have big plans for my several basses. |
