Yeah i saw :) How do you think you went? I did computer studies in years 9 and 10...looking back i have no idea why i didn't do IT instead...get 2 units of my hsc done, and a hell of a lot more interesting than the boring crap we did in computer studies. We learned the finer points of using microsoft word and excel and stuff.....i spent most of the 2 years playing stupid internet games to pass the time haha.

Haha drunk fun, it's great.

That's weird jase i never had that problem, firefox is good with the whole tabbed windows thing though, maybe check out a new browser unless someone can help fix it.

ariathe21st 11-01-2006 01:14 AM

hows life everyone

Trigger_003 11-01-2006 01:14 AM

I've gotten around to deciding I did fairly well. My teacher said if I don't get an A+ he'll go on a rampage to VCAA (your BOS) :p.

Most of it's common sense (check out the Discussion Thread - some of those questions you'd be able to do lol). I wish the exam had actually been a bit harder, because that would really seperate the results of those who had studied from those who had only half-tried.

Ninj-edit: yer great thanks, how's bout you?

ariathe21st 11-01-2006 01:16 AM

not to bad exams comin up cant wait til holidays i ned a break

Trigger_003 11-01-2006 01:26 AM

I know the feeling. Going away or anything?

Jo Shoe Wah 11-01-2006 01:34 AM

It's a shame when they're like that. (Basically the whole school certificate (years 9-10)) We were soooo worked up about that and then it was heaaaaps easy.

Haha that reminds me of when i did an english speech which another teacher marked where i got 6/15, my normal teacher complained to the marking teacher that my speech was far better than she marked it and tried to get my mark changed. Unfortunately this woman is a massive bitch and wouldn't budge. She claimed that my speech was too shallow and a whole other bunch of bullshit and my normal teacher was thrilled with my speech when i gave her a runthrough.

Good luck aye, sounds like you did well.

Trigger_003 11-01-2006 01:43 AM

Thanks bro. Man that sucks with your speech. Gotta hate those teachers.

It's funny with our music assessments. Our classroom teacher will insist something was wrong whilst our MD will say "no, that's definitely right - come on, I'm teaching him this piece for chrissake" and they argue about all kinds of stuff.

Argh, last solo performance, she started tapping with her foot really off the beat to one of my pieces so I had to swap into her beat because it was really putting me off in my peripheral.

She threw a kid out of the room last year because someone said The Cure was a 70s band... and she dinted the BRICK wall by flinging the door open so hard when she was throwing someone else out of the room. She's so loved...

Jo Shoe Wah 11-01-2006 01:57 AM

Hahaha...fark how rediculous. We had another sub teacher for english one day (my god what is it with these english teachers) who threw my drummer out of the class and subsquently got him actually kicked out of the class and plodded into another...because he was eating one of those cheese spread things. She claimed he was throwing it around the room and sleeping on the floor and all kinds or crap. My music teacher is awesome, she's so laid back about everything and not in any way biased when it comes to musical tastes.

eg. we have a guitarist in our class who plays shred metal-esque and shes totally cool with that, then she'll have discussions about classical/baroque with another student...and then when i did Carnatic Indian music last term she was really interested to learn about the small amount of it that i know (:p). You can't put a foot wrong in terms of song choice with her unless it's outside the topic you've chosen or some constructive suggestions to what you could try to improve on.

Trigger_003 11-01-2006 02:10 AM

 I think that's worse.

Haha awesome. Ours hates jazz apparently. But she looked impressed when I played some last semester, so I'm pretty happy there.

I don't get how people are so set in what they like or dislike sometimes. I can't stand it when people don't give different sorts of music a chance.

On a related note, you shoulda seen my grandma's face when she found out I was listening to metal. lol!

Jo Shoe Wah 11-01-2006 04:20 AM

Yeah exactly i try to draw influence from everything i listen to, my media player library has indian/flamenco/rock/metal/psychedelia/progressiv/folk/jazz/blues/some electronic stuff that my friend got me insterested in/hip hop etc etc

I mean obviously as a guitarist i'm more influenced and steered towards guitar related music, but theres a tonne you can learn and draw from other forms of music or other instruments.

Example: my drummer was telling me about metric modulation in drumming the other day so now i'm interested in learning about it to try and incorporate it into my playing/composing.

Haha your grandma would have had quite a shock i guess, or was it that she was like OMG TREA HOW GOOD IS METAL I NEVER KNEW YOU LIKED IT! QUICK COME LISTEN TO SOME PANTERA (make shift manner :p hahaha)

Trigger_003 11-01-2006 05:17 AM

Haha all the time.

I really don't look like someone who would listen to metal, so yeah. It led to me finding out that my cousin actually listened to it in her teens too, which is kinda scary. I was born the day after her 21st birthday, and seriously at practically every stage of my life there's been a photo of her that looks like me (not that I'm complaining). Srs, my sister was shown a photo of my cous when I was younger and when they asked who it was, she said it was me. She played guitar excessively in her teens, was up there academically, we both had childhood dreams of being an architect (except she actually is one now), both have a thing for languages (she knows like 5)... freakish-like.

That's great. Metric modulation is fun. Seriously pull that stuff into your playing, trust me, people love it. Analyse some of those latin beats, rhythms from them tabla, etc.
There was an article I had from somewhere which I think was relevant.

EDIT: One of these might be it...

Jo Shoe Wah 11-01-2006 07:29 AM

Hey thanks :) , i'll have a good read of that it seems like really interesting stuff. This is what i love about music/music theory....there's always more to learn...and just when you're confused about where to go next you just get led onto something...i love it. By the way, my drummer is planning on buying a violin and just teaching himself that on the side, which i think is pretty cool. I'm sure there's something he can pull from a better understanding of violin...to benefit his drumming. Even if it is just learning to read say the rhythm of sheet music better (he reads drums as notation).

Gotta say though, drums...violin. Two of the most annoying instruments for people to put up with when someone is learning them, his mum is pretty damn tolerant :p

Trigger_003 11-01-2006 03:31 PM

Ughhhh so tired

Dude, stop stealing my opinions! :)

Interesting choice for a drummer, almost makes him sound like he's becoming a musician :p. Nah I love em, they're awesome.

kevbud187 11-02-2006 08:10 PM

lol this is the first ime I've been awake since halloween. I had a good halloween. Let just leave it at that and move on...

SO do you guys have AP exams in Australia?

Trigger_003 11-03-2006 12:00 AM

They're like AP (or how I understand AP, which isn't much) but we call them HSC (for NSW - where sydney is lol), or VCE for Victoria. Other states have different names for them too, but hey, they're all essentially the same sort of thing with different names and variations on coursework.

C'ept, our uni entry score is based on our yr 12 results (mainly our yr 12 exams), whereas yours is some kind of point system you build up across several years' results, amirite? Or am I mixing that up with somewhere else?

kevbud187 11-03-2006 01:48 AM

no in america its yrs 9 - 12, but pretty much the only things that count are yr 10 and 11, your AP results, SAT score, ACT number(some other test) and your entry paper.

I know a guy who wanted to go to college as a French Horn major. He broke his face right after he got in via audtion and will never be able to play again. He failed a lot of his classes all 4 yrs and he didn't do too well on any other tests. But damn he used to be able to play Horn. Moral of the story:

He still goes to that same college, paying the same amount he would have if he still played Horn. America is messed up.

And yes his face story is funny, sad and true. We party hard in California.

Aus_rock_god 11-03-2006 02:03 AM

Haha, we had a guy called Phil in my music classes. He fell asleep in front of the drumkit in music class one day, so the teacher started doing a drum solo.

The dude woke up and threatened to break the teacher's nose.

Another time I missed music class (ONCE, that was the only time I ever wagged music). He got a bit sh!tty at that, so as punishment, he tangled all the cables in the music room, and made me untangle them.

Bastard.

Anyways, Trea dude, my band's playing with a whole bunch of other bands in Melbourne on Cup Day.

It's just a backyard gig, nothing too crash hot, but if you wanna come along, it's at 37 Miranda ave, Resivour. Starts at 12.

Trigger_003 11-03-2006 08:28 PM

Haha that's hillarious, and mean (not Kev's story, that's sad as :().

Sweet. I'm going to another party in the arvo so I might not be able to make it, but maybe :).

AMEB exam today.

Aus_rock_god 11-03-2006 08:46 PM

Tell us how you go dude.

Josh: I'm still trying to fix my browser.

*walks off swearing a lot*

Trigger_003 11-04-2006 01:51 AM

Does
::::::::GRRRRRRRRRINNNNNNNNNNN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:::::D:::::::

Give you enough of an idea?
XD!

Jo Shoe Wah 11-04-2006 04:49 AM

Gah that sucks my internet has been really dodgy lately too, ever since my mum/brother set up this damn wireless internet it goes offline alot. Have you googled your problem and tried to find if anyone else had a similar problem? Wish i could help there. If all else fails consider a browser change, i was suprised with how user friendly and useful firefox was when i started using it.

And congrats trea :) i read how you went in the vce/hsc discussion thread.

Btw, this term our topic is on stuff like minimalism, serialism and chance music. Chance music for anyone who doesn't know...was something used by John cage who composed 4' 33" (4 mins 33 seconds of silence). He composed using a die and chose his note depending on what the die rolled, it's reallyyyy annoying and in my oppinion quite stupid, i get the idea this guy just composed the weirdest ways he could think of so he could deem it experimental and creative, kinda like painting a canvas all one colour. Anyways my composition for this term has to fit into one of the categories they gave us which includes chance music minimalism serialism electronic music and a few others, it's probably going to annoy me but hopefully i can find a way of writing something i like through it.

Trigger_003 11-04-2006 05:29 AM

Thanks :)

Ah yeah, Cage is a strange guy. Serialism should be fun... tone rows and stuff yeah? I had to play a serial piece for my exam :p.

Speaking of strange pieces, we had this piece at AYB... it involved the clarinets and saxes taking off their mouthpieces at some stage and playing through those (gives a high pitched squeal in case you haven't come across that before), trombones and trumpets doing a pitched mouthpiece duet, the percussionists hitting practically anything and everything they could, and one of the movements concluded with the clarinets having to gargle a Bb. Fun stuff!

EDIT: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Serenade_for_an_Awful_Lot_of_Winds_and_Percussion

The audience usually love it anyway lol.

Jo Shoe Wah 11-04-2006 07:02 AM

Yeah tone rows are the basis of it if i'm not mistaken. I was actually looking at doing serialism, as i don't think i can bring myself to compose something based on the roll of a die :p

 that sounds really fun, reminds me of this composition lecture i went to in sydney where a few students had their compositions showcased. In one of the compositions a few ping pong balls were dropped on the pianos strings followed by an entire bucketfull, the violinist also took a guitar pick and scraped it across the pianos strings quickly, it was weird but cool and fitting to the music. Haha oh yeah the composer also featured in the performance with a rainstick, and actually stood there whilst talking about the piece and explained to a large group of year 11/12 and uni students....what a rainstick was....

Trigger_003 11-04-2006 04:24 PM

Somewhere I play has a rainstick. Might be school... I srsly can't remember. Great fun.

That's awesome. I really need to get out to some of those things, I think they'd be really beneficial (not particularly dropping ping pong balls, but you know what I mean).

Oh so it's an option of pieces? Depending on what you were allowed for minimalism, I'd so get a bansuri flute with two parts, one a drone and another a really slow flowing melody.
If I could get someone to play it... <_<

Minimalism is alright but presenting it to the class could be kind of weird/non-exciting for them, that's the only problem. You could dive into some Indian composition there but.

You could get some VERY interesting things happening with electronic, and probably compose close to your usual medium (simply using different instruments like synths) if that's what you want to do. Means you can quite possibly convert it later - with a few tweaks - to a song your band can use.

Linkage:
http://www.dolmetsch.com/musictheory40.htm#minimalism
http://www.dolmetsch.com/musictheory40.htm#electronics
http://www.dolmetsch.com/musictheory40.htm#twelve <- serialism (it's also called Dodecaphony or twelve note if you're having trouble googling with serialism)
http://www.dolmetsch.com/musictheory40.htm#experimental <- this one fairly much just looks at the more famous experimental composers more than anything, but some of the links might be of use if you're wanting to go that way.

Love that site.

Jo Shoe Wah 11-04-2006 07:10 PM

Thanks for the links and advice :)

I'll have to have a closer look at them and figure what i'll do. Electronic music and serialism are the two i'm considering at the moment, i could use a drum sequencer and throw some synth like you said on top, record a few loops of sound and try to put some structure into it, maybe i'll get something similar to baba o riley :p i love that song, eh i'll figure something out, thanks again for the advice :)

Btw billy hydes sounds soooo awesome, around here we have like 3 music shops and then in sydney/newcastle theres a buttload more. One of them is just down the road from my school so when we have free periods my drummer and i usually go down there to hang about and admire :p

Trigger_003 11-04-2006 07:53 PM

Nice :). Very effective use of study time, I like it :p.

Sounds good man, have fun with whatever you choose to do.

ariathe22nd 11-04-2006 10:17 PM

watup guys

hows life

Trigger_003 11-05-2006 02:22 AM

pretty good man

Hehe, this little girl: "Mummy, I love you. I love you more than the shower."
Her little sister/friend/whatever: "Jee mum, that must be a loh-ot!"

It was so cute.

Trigger_003 11-07-2006 09:16 PM

sooo...

Sorry didn't make it yesterday Jason, it was my sister's and uncle's birthday the day before so we had to celebrate that plus the party was too far away from yours to get over there in time.

Jo Shoe Wah 11-07-2006 11:41 PM

Did anyone win anything at the cup?

My dad got me sweeps for me and my brother...i got tawqeet, damn horseshoe. Haha ah well.

Trigger_003 11-08-2006 12:22 AM

$2!!!!

Sweep as well, haha. Both my horses came 3rd and 4th. My grandma did pretty well - she'd betted on the first and second winners. She always backs no. 2 lol.

Jo Shoe Wah 11-08-2006 12:32 AM

Haha, my mum juuuuuuuust missed out on the trifecta, had some other horse instead of #12 apparently

Aus_rock_god 11-10-2006 06:26 AM

Bloody hell.

I've currently got no phone reception, so I'm talking to Jade about Jack using myspace, and f*cking myspace decides to chuck a mental.

Jack's only 4 months old now, and he's started rolling around. He's mobile, so we're trying to teach him to crawl.

He's still too little to lift himself up, but he's more determined than his old man and his mum put together. Seriously, my son is stubborn.

What he's doing, is rolling onto his stomich and trying to lift himself up. He'll get frustrated that he's not strong enough to do it, so he'll start grunting and sooking. Then Jade would pick him up and he'll scream. She'll put him down on his back and he'll scream louder. So she'll roll him onto his belly and he'll keep trying to crawl, still sooking.

What a champ.

I hate the internet somtimes. I especcially hate myspace sometimes.

I missed the cup though guys. I was playing music really loud during it. One of my brother's mates got the trifecta though after he put $500 on it, so he's apparently taking 6 months off work.

Jo Shoe Wah 11-11-2006 02:24 AM

Wow...lucky mate.

Haha your son sounds awesome, i bet if he takes up an instrument he'll be determined to progress on it at a nice pace, betcha can't wait for the day you can jam with him haha.

I hate my internet too, always screws up at the worst moments. By the way did you fix that browser problem?

Aus_rock_god 11-12-2006 05:00 AM

No, I havn't. I'm actually getting seriously dangerously close to throwing my computer out the window, and buying a Mac.

Yeah, he'll be a drummer I'm tipping, then he'll completely master it by the age of two and take up guitar.

Jo Shoe Wah 11-12-2006 08:45 AM

Noooo, heretic! :p That's really weird but i've never heard of that happening with anyone i know, and my dad used to fix computer stuff like that.

Hmm...

Trigger_003 11-12-2006 03:45 PM

I'd feel less guilty about missing the cup. We didn't realise the time during rehearsal as we were rushing around getting ready for a gig and missed The Minute. I feel horrible.

Hehe, Jack, Jase and Jade.
That's awesome man. Sounds like a good lil tackler. Let's hope he's not like that when he hits the teens :p.
