Peccatum - Stillness

I've wanted to hear Peccatum for a while now. Then I forgot about it until seeing the chance now.

A guitar playing some... cold mechanical theme starts, some gratey industrial noises join.
A variety of voices, male and female, start the singing, one of which sounds like Jon from Korn. It's very mechanical and grating, but slow and somehow calm.

The chorus (I guess) loses the basically the whole harsh edge that first part has. Some nice female vocals are singing here, some arabic sounding harmonies. The drums are doing a trip-hop beat, it's pretty interesting. A piano starts, and it feels to be building to something big.

Yep, here come the dense walls of harsh industrial noise. There's a horn section that goes along with it, I'm surprised I can hear it. The walls come and go, interspersed by noises. Flies.

It goes back to the original guitar line, verse and chorus, just slightly different percussion. Then a bridge, a slow chugging single bass note, and a male and female vocalist doubling the lyrics.

It goes back to the walls of noise/horns, then ends with the sound of flies as before.

Woeo.. that was very cold, one of the more creepy songs I've heard in quite a while. I liked the guitar work, it was quite minimalist but it did so much, also it was there almost the whole time, yet it didn't get in the way, or be annoying.
It would go well on a Quake-type game. I liked it for the most part, a bit noisy at times, but that was purely intentional. I thought it was going to be more aggressive, but I'm pleasantly surprised. I will get more. 8.9/10

Down to Size - Hoax
Never heard of or by.

Begins with some hi-hat and bass. Then explodes. Kinda funky. This sounds like nu-metal to me. Chuggy guitar chords and simple sounding drums. Not too bad. The vocals are kind of rap/yelled. Then we get a melodic section. I like this much better. Still nu-metal. The lyrics are very nu-metal as well.

It's a decently done song, just not my style. I like the section where both vocal styles are going.

The drums have some interesting, though not exactly impressive, fills here and there.

Not a lot to say. A cool mix of the spectrums of nu-metal. Get's the funky rap version in there and the really melodic type. I probably won't look for any more.

Behold... The Arctopus - Estrogen-Pathogen Exchange Program

Another band I've heard whispers about and wanted to hear.

Ah, you knows I like ambience, the opening is this. Dark synth strings playing single notes... it sounds a bit cheesy and wrong. After about a year, guitar comes in it's really low and the music is really dull, misty, but this mist is made of glue and vomit. It's really thick and not nice at all.

About half way through is the first drum/cymbal hit and a smash of notes. Then it just goes spastic. Very technical instrumentation, slap bass and guitar, but it sounds rather random. I don't like random sounding music. These guys can sure play their instruments... I just wish they would do it in a way that I'd want to hear, like Atheist does.

At 4:15 they finally get something together, it sounds constructed. It's not random anymore, and that's a good thing. With only a minute left, not much can save this for me.. Everything but the drums have stopped. The drums go on a solo rampage with lots of toms and bass, it's cool. Then they slow down while keeping the pattern going (!) until the thing ends.

Well, at least I heard it. Disgusting music, I really didn't like the first bit, second bit, third bit, and fourth bit, but the last minute was alright. Far too random for my tastes.
2/10.

Fagan - Beautiful Mundane
Never heard of or by. I am near a virgin to trip-hop as well.

Begins with some ambience and then a beat comes in. The ambience is pulsing. I like the tone of this so far, the atmosphere is nice. Then the drum beat really comes in with a singer. I like his voice. It's soothing. It's all very soothing. A female voice replaces his in a little bit. Not a lot is going on, but that's the way it should be. It feels like movie sountrack music.

He come back singing and it's more rhythmic but also more sung.... it's cool. The bvass is becoming increasingly noticeable. Then we get a section with more stuff going on. A really fuzzy guitar or something and the drum beat picks up. I like it. Still soothign but faster. There are also faux-strings. I like them. There is a swell and some mechanical sounds then it all clears up (it was all slightly distorted) and comes back in. I like this. The strings are a ncie touch. The voices come back in, but distantly now. I like it. All very well done. Move music, or at least fodder for an excellent music video.

The ending is nicely sparse.

9/10 I liked it. I'll look further into trip-hop.

I'm still new to the wonderful world of innovation that we find in Avant Garde, but I'm sure such a name denotes a wonderful band sound.

----------------------------------
Sleepytime Gorilla Museum - Phthisis 3 minutes, 44 seconds.

The song starts out well enough. Low noises of soothing ambience begin to be punctured by industrial drum beats. No sign of guitar yet, but some synth work. At around 30secs in, the drum beat changes, we hear a bit of a chord from the guitar(s), and we hear the first vocals. Female, whining vocals. They are actually very uncomfortable. The basic beat is very repetitive, and the vocals are making me want to stop the song. The music changes a few times, and I am finding it very interesting, enough to keep my listening. The song changes mood at around 2:35, which is when I start to actually like it a lot. A male voice comes in, and blends well with the feminine vocals. The music is very industrial, and the song comes together rather well. It's sort of like this is what I have been listening to the song for, and they finally got their act together. From this point on the song is great.

Impressions: I'm not sure if the song is intentionally uncomfortable before the point when I started to like it, but I wouldn't put anything past avant garde. As such, I can respect the song artistically, but not really musically.

Score: 5/10 - This score is high mostly for the last part of the song, which I quite enjoyed.

My picks
Australian Crawl - Oh No Not You Again (New Wave Rock)
St Vitus - Born Too Late (Doom Metal)
Demilich - And The Slimy Creatures Reproduce In Your Brain (Ambient Death Metal, I guess)
Judas Priest - The Green Manalishi (With The Two Pronged Crown) (Classic Metal)

Judas Priest - The Green Manalishi
I've heard some (as everyone has) and don't like it. Try try again.

Begins with a classic riff and simple drums. This does not bode well. There is some nice harmonizing going on between the two guitars. Then we get a chuggy palm muted chord. The singer comes in, meh.

There are some little fills in the guitar and they are unimpressive and kind of boring sounding. I feel like I can't call any of this cliche though because this is what made it cliche. The singer sounds too relaxed. No energy.

A solo. It's a fairly stock classic rock/metal sounding solo. THen is speeds up and tosses in some pinch harmonics. Kinda cool but boring. I wish they would do something exciting like a time change or this works. This really thick sounding harmonized section at around 3:00 with whip sounds in the background. THe ending riff is also pretty cool.

The classics are not my thing. 4/10

Dysrhythmia - Circulatory System Overhaul

The song begins with one of the cooler, old school ish riffs i haev ever heard. It super catchy, with awesome bass work. The guitars distortion is very cool. The drums are just in the back, doin their own thing like drummers do. The song gains some strength for a while, the bassist is doing some real good stuff, including chords and arpeggios (probobly). The riff changes, but the bass contiues doing what its doing. The guitar now is playing a lot of single notes, likes its doing a slow motion solo.

at 2:05 or so, the bass and guitar come back together. Playing the same notes, in a very cool chord progression. Then, the bass and drums switch it up a lil, stoping after the first hit of each note. Then they continue. The guitar again breaks off, and does another solo.

at 3 minuets, the song changes again completly. the drums are playing a more catchy, complex rythm, with ride and a tight snare sonund. The bass is doing the same thing, the guitar is just going off on its own thing, which fits very well. The next portion of the song sounds much the same, only with a little more jazz influence.

at 3:55, it switches for a few seconds to a very jazzy section, then to a harder metal section, and back. When it comes back to the metal section again, it stays like that and fades. Now we are in another section in which, for the bass, there is a little more jazz influence. The drums are very catchy again. The guitar is playing the same riff from the beginning, as are drums and bass. This is very catchy portion of the song again. Something i would totally blast in the car while sitting in traffic. The guitars are doing some harmonics work, as are the bass i believe. its an earie feel when they do it together. And thus concludes the song.

Great piece, overall a 8/10

Alien Ant Farm - Summer
Heard the singles.

begins with a chord progression quickly joined by some very nice basswork and drums. I dig this. The singer enters and his voice passes the test. It keeps going and sounds good. We get the chorus and it is great although the bass part isno't nearly as good here. The melodies are great. I really like this stuff. The singer is doing an excellent job and has a very unique voice. It's nearly nu-metal but not quite and funky and just good. I really like this.

my biggest complaint is the smaeness of the song. The bass however, saves this. There are basically 2 main bass fills that are both excellent.

I wish there was more to sya but there despite being a good song, there;s not a lot going on that really took me except for the bass. The singer was good and I'm sure the drummer and guitarist are both fine.

Neurotic Outsiders - Nasty Ho
Never hear of or by

bwgins with the standard punk durm intro and then a guitar plays a chord prog with the hi-hat. Hmmm... ooohh I like this. The bass enters and does a cool little fill. Maybe this is another good bassist I should know about. The chord progression loudens up and the drums come all the way in. The singer enters. He's nothing special but not bad. There isn't nuch going on that's interesting. The bass isn't playing any more cool stuff and this guitar riff just keeps going. Kinda dull. The chorus is alright but not different enough and nothing cool is going on.

THe lyrics are inappropriate. I guess that fits the title. There is a littl bridge at about 3 minutes that is a slight change and then we get something much different. A different drum beat and lots of effects on the bass with the guitar playing little arpeggios. I oike it. Then the punk starts fading back in while the singer does a Bono trick and hum sings over top with a ton of reverb. Then it stops and the sogn restarts. There is a little guitar solo of 2 notes and the singer is kind of talking over top.
