Hello, gents, what's up?
Nothing? That's cool, too. |
Maiden rocked me in ways I've neve been rocked before.
Discussions of my inexperience with the world of physical sexuality aside, yesterdya, and especially last night was absolutley incredible. /GIVES A BRIEF REVIEW OF WHAT I DID YESTERDAY: So, fell asleep at quater to three (excitement) and woke up at 10 to five, an hour earlier than I wanted to be up, and couldn't go back to sleep for that hour (excitment). Ah well. Me and my mate sauntered down to the station, took a tube accross to paddington. At this point, we bought a coffee from starbucks, because we needed to WAKE UP. Mocha Frappacino = yummy. To cut a long story short, we arrived at the festival around 11:15. I bought meself a program and an "Eddie rips up Reading Festival T-shirt" AND a Maiden Poster upon entering the main arena, all before the first act was on the main stage :) First band I saw was Bullet for my Valentine, on the main stage. I'd heard of these guys before, but not heard any of their stuff. From the name, I was expecting 'scremo' in the style of Funeral for a Friend and a million other bands (or so it seems). And they were, sort of, but a lot heavier. They got the crowd going, and all in all, were a decent first act. I then got dragged across to the Radio 1/NME stage to see a post-punky punk band called "towers of london". They were'nt great, musically, but they got the crowd going, they did all the right moves and were entertaining enough. In the middle of one of their songs, someone hit the lead singer in the head with a bottle of water - and the crowd responded with the obligatory "WAHEY!". At the end of the song, the lead singer grabbed the mic and said, "nice shot, wanker". Very amusing. Whilst their songs aren't good, if they are playing support at a gig you're going to, I'd recomend going to see their whole set. Back to the main stage for us now - my mate's favourite band, the 'scremo' kings Funeral for a Friend, where on next. They were OK, but last time I saw them (London Astoria, October 2003), they were much, much better. The lead singer cut his hair - good for him, he looks better for it :) We then sort of just went around the market, and sat in the Radio 1/NME tent, in the shade. A band called "HAL" came on. We stayed for two or three songs, but we found them boring, so instead we shuffled over to the main stage to catch the last half of NOFX's set. And boy, was it rubbish. The music itself I find dull - but they spent far more time ****ing around than playing their songs! From here on in we stayed at the Main Stage. Iggy and the Stooges were pretty good, they played well and were pretty entertaining, but I don't feel the got the crowd working as well as you perhaps expected that they would. Incubus next. They, too, were very dull. Normally, I LIKE Incubus, I think they have some pretty decent songs, but they didn't have a very good set list - it was mostly stuff from the new album. They didn't play ANY songs from Make Yourself! Manson was the next artist on, main support. And, let me tell you, he suprised me - I didn't realise he was such a good live artist. And he is. Of course, his stage was a mixture of the bizarre and the more bizarre - stilts, cross dressing, gallows, large hats, smudged make up, facist symbols, electronic boards, swinging chandalliers, atonal violins... yeh. Manson all over. The crowd got pretty into it, myself included, and we good fun singing along to his songs (yes, that's right, FUN!). Even if he DID drop a pair of knickers that he was wearing under his skirt. *cough* Then, the main headliners themselves... the one, the only, IRON ****ING MAIDEN. The show kicked off with 'Ides of March', a small instrumental piece that opens up the 'Killers' album (the set list comprised entirely of songs from the first four albums). It was an intense adrenaline rush, the entire crowd (about 50,000 were at the main stage) singing along with the guitar melody - "WOAH! WOAH-OAH! WOAH-OAH-OAH! WOAH-OAH!". Maiden then kicked straight in with "Murders in the Rue Morgue", skipping the slow intro (having replaced it with Ides of March), and let me tell you, it was such a fuggin' thrill to see the five members not stuck behind a drum kit running on stage, leaping about, whilst playing "Murders" (a song also from the Killers album). They burst on stage amidst an explosion of sparks and pyrotechnics. And, of course, you could tell the hardcore Maiden fans from the non-hardcore, by which ones were singing along to the song (one which isn't often played live, and thus not known to fans who don't have a wide knowledge of Maiden material) and which ones were simply head banging. I, of course, new the song word-perfectly (sort of), and thus sang along. Score! Sticking with the 'Killers' album, Maiden then played "another life". This is the only song on the setlist that I don't really like, I find it a bit dull - the band played it really, REALLY well, for the first time I actually like the song - but I think that perhaps, it would have been better if they didn't play 'Another life', and played the title-track from the "killers" album instead - Killers is fuggin' BRILLIANT song, but unfortuantely one not featured on the setlist. Maiden then played "Prowler" - the first song on the first Maiden album. And the crowed really got into this one, again, screaming along at the top of their voices and headbanging like crazy. The next song they played is one of Maiden's most loved tunes, and a live staple - none other than "The Trooper". From the moment Bruce screamed the song title down the mic, the crowd erupted, and got second wind - they went even crazier than when Maiden first came on stage. And boy, did Maiden play it well. Bruce ran on wearing the same costume that Eddie is so famously depicted as wearing on the single cover - the red one, with the white straps and brass buttons - and, of course, he was waving a giant Union Jack. When the 50 thousand strong audience all joined in with the chorus, I'm sure you could have heard it MILES away - even those who have never heard the song was able to join in after the first chorus - it's not one that is particularly hard to learn :) During the bridge/solos, a guy in an Eddie mask, also wearing the 'Trooper' outfit and waving a Union Jack, ran on stage - it was as if the single cover had come to life! When the song was over, the crowd screamed like crazy! Bruce talked directly to the audience - first saying that the Eddie in the 'Trooper' get up was, in fact, Steve's son - which evoked more cheering and applause from the audience. Bruce then talked about how he joined the band - how it was at Reading in 81, having just played with his former band Samson, that he was approached by the Maiden manager Rod Smallwood backstage, next to a lampost - believe it or not, Bruce said yes :) and the rest, as they say, is history. Bruce said that the same lampost was still there backstage! The story, of course, was treated with more cheering. Bruce then said that the next day, he had to sing a song with Maiden as an audition - and he passed. And he said that he was then going to sing that song. And the song was the ever fantastic "Remember Tomorrow". For those who don't know the song "Remember Tomorrow", it's a slow, melodic verse, with a slow, but heavy, brooding chorus, and a fast paced bridge. During the initial first verse, the lighters were out in the air (including mine - I don't even smoke [ciggarettes], but I brought a long my lighter for this song :)) The song was incredible live - phenomenal infact. Bruce led the crowd along with "YEH! YEH! YEH! YEH!" etc. It's not hard to see why Bruce got into the band on the strengh of his performance of that song - Di'anno sang it well, bless him, but he couldn't touch Bruce at all last night. Sorry Paul - even if you DO sing Sanctuary better (well, sort of. We'll get to that later :)) The next song is the one that everybody knows and loves: Run To The Hills. From the instantly recognisable drum intro, the crowd went BEZERK. Again, the whole crowd sang, shouted and screamed along with the "white man came..." intro, and when the song started its galloping, the whole audience jumped like crazy, almost as one man - at this point, I jumped really high, and looked behind me - it was insane how many people were there! (Because I had been at the main stage since NOFX, I was about 10 or 15 rows away from the stage - less even! We were in the front 10% of the audience, maybe even front 5% - I was close enough to recognise each individual member, and to see their facial expression and everything! IT WAS FANTASTIC!) Bruce managed to get incredibly high (note-wise) druing the WOAHWOAH section of the bridge. Incredible stuff. The band then played another "Killers" song - Wrathchild, another live staple. The crowd again screamed along with the shouty-chorus, but not at the energy they had for Run To The Hills. But it was done very, very well. Bruce then introduced Revlations amidst much screaming - this was another singer-alonger. The crowd screamed along like nobodies business - this song was done so well it's unbelievable. Epic, slow in some parts, fast in others, it was perfect. Fantastic. The band then dissappeared - and some military speech was issued over the PA. The stage started flickering with strobe lighitng, and some machine gun sounds were used - and then, the band launched into the incredible "where eagles dare". As a drummer, let me tell yout his - if you ever see "WED" live, nicko will BLOW YOU THE **** AWAY. It was even played FASTER THAN ON THE FUGGIN' ALBUM! It was INSANELY virtuoistic, and was incredible in every single way. It's things like this that make Maiden by far the greatest band you will EVER see live. I'm at my word limit, I'll conitnue this later in a second post :) |
Nice write-up.

Gur, I realise they probably put on a great show and all, but it makes me feel a little unconfortable to see someone taking iron maiden so veyr seriously.
|
Good to see Gur had the time he deserved.
And moaner, wait till Tool hit these shores. That'll be a fanboy write up to puke over |

And moaner, wait till Tool hit these shores. That'll be a fanboy write up to puke over
/sigh I wasn't like this after aussie pink floyd or mark knopfler, and those were 2 fantastic shows, although i gather it wouldn've mattered which show i'd been to on the tour, they'd all've been the same. |
Ill spare you the review then (gonna be 2007 at this rate anyway). but everyone has a band they cant fail to not love when they see them, regardless of how badly they suck or not.
|
The Aussie Floyd pwned both times I saw them (2003 and earlier this year).

totally, they're as good as the real deal. |

I wouldnt say that but lets be honest, Maiden could never top a Donny performance at some NME suck up indie fest |
So, who's going to get FOD?
Oh, me. |
I wouldnt say that but lets be honest, Maiden could never top a Donny performance at some NME suck up indie fest
also, they were playing music from the good era, but with bruce? Bruce, the vocalist who was once in Samson? The same Bruce (likes to put his)Dick in (his) son who wrote "Bring your daughter..." And if we're honest, Nicko really isn't an especially good drummer. Especially when compared to clive. |
Now why isnt Gur around when we have Maiden debates? Be more fun then
|
must sleeeeeeeeeee[[..ppp.

And if we're honest, Nicko really isn't an especially good drummer. Especially when compared to clive.
A) Bruce WAS the vocalist on two of the four albums that the setlist was chosen from. B) Yes, Bruce wrote "Bring your daughter..." (which I still feel is a great song), but he also wrote "Revalations" and "Powerslave". C) Nicko and Clive have two very seperate styles - Clive played better and more interesting beats and employed some grooving, whereas Nicko tends to play striaght beats, and show off his skill & flair during his fills. And has by far the fastest right foot of any drummer. I'll write up the last few songs later today. Food now :) |
Hey gur, I'm sorry. Just because iI prefer the very early dtuff doesn't mean bruce is a terrible singer nor that Nicko is a bad drummer, and I shouldn't be so argumentative.
However, there is no way you can enjoy bring your daughter... without several handfuls of salt. Its just so cheesey, such an epitome of the OTT metal that iron maiden do. |

Samson were great with Bruce  |
Does anyone have any Extol Cd's in here?
Looking to hear a bit for their support slot for Opeth like me? Or just randomly wanting to hear some? |
So even I didnt give some up-to-the-limit-and-over account of when I saw VR, jeez Gur! Glad you enjoyed it though
*now I may be tired, or slow, or suffering skinhead-enduced concusion but Ben- WHEN THE HELL DID YOU GET STARS YOUNG MAN?! :thumb: So last night Jess saw the mighty Bad Religion- bloody good I tell thee. Oh and um....Jess now has a new bassist there'll be major pervage on- I always liked his basslines but never knew he looked that good  never knew someone could carry off a kilt so darn well either  So er yeah- great gig, was at the barrier and had a skinhead sat on me at one point :s Also-is it just me who likes the "pit" smell? I know it's mingin' and all that but I dunno it seems comforting in a way  |

I neglected to mention the humorous joke* played on the support band, Emanuel.
The Astoria is used for G-A-Y nights and basically Emanuel came on and started their first song and up flashed the lights spelling GAY in massive letters behind them, sooo funny :) *just realised all jokes are humorous really so  |
Yeah I was gonna put a disclaimer in there about the majority of my jokes but the I thought it'd lead to ridicule....anyway true "jokes" are funny- our attempts saddly aren't
