Well I'd need to proof if you say you can play the Battery riff, Puppets downpicked, disposable heroes properly without stopping, Dyers Eve etc.

The 2nd part isn't worth bothering with, it's your opinion. I know what music you usually listen to so not liking Metallica is understandable. I don't even like them as much as I used to but there's no denying that they're one of the most influential bands in the world ever along with Black Sabbath, Van Halen, Led Zepplin and all them lot.
For the record: I alt picked MoP. As I do with ALMOST everything. I down pick the AYDY intro though.
I can't remember playing or saying I played Battery. I can't remember what Disposable Heroes sounds like, same for Dyers Eve.

I don't want to argue on "influential", I agree obviously with Black Sabbath. They were the first "heavy metal" band. From the reading I've done.
I used to listen to Van Halen, though not in a while. I should dl a few albums. heh.

The st anger made me laugh though. That's one of the worst albms I've ever heard. The song is among the worst on it.

While we're on subject of downpicking.

What's the difference if I downpick only a riff or economy pick it? Both are downpicking it...

repcak 06-30-2006 05:38 AM

if you downpick or alternate pick - it would sound differently (correct me if i'm wrong)

Dyers Eve is the fastest song Metallica ever wrote right? and they never played it live
3-4-3-4-3-4 at 250bmp?`they can't play it :D

Depends. Some stuff does sound different, some doesn't. It reallly depends on the riff/song.

And disposable heroes doesn't sound that bad live too :thumb:
I picked up an acoustic today :D
It's an Alvarez, never heard of them before, but its really nice. It was originally about $690 or so, but I got it (and a hardshell case) for $390. It was marked half price cause it was an "almost perfect" guitar. Meaning there's a slight imperfection in it (I have yet to find it) so they won't sell for full price. It's acoustic/electric so I can record nicely with it too. I would have pics, but I don't own a camera...
you and your guitars.. and your guitar effects.. ugh.

hha 123 on Adam and his guitar stuff.

Sure sure sure. Metallica is worthless, talentless, bland, boring, over hyped, annoying crap. Always has been & always will be.

Putting their music aside, they're terrible people. I'm not just talking about the napster thing. That was very understandable. It's where they've taken it. (IE, sueing a swedish steel mining company because the swedish word for metal(ha kinda what steel is ) was "to close to metallica". I have an idea. Don't pick such a generic band name and act like you're 40something, not 5 year olds accusing the other kids of "copying him". I hate Lars mostly, though I have no soft spots for any of them.

I don't care what Mitch says on this one. He's normally right on with guitar stuff. I think he's very wrong on this.

EDIT: To Julianne. Not really.

I mean. When you make (the song or album for that matter) St. Anger a point in your arguement, you've seriously run out of gas.

MRDuCran 06-30-2006 04:24 PM

How can I be wrong about an opinion?

And I suspected you played MoP with alternate picking, I can't play it with downstrokes either.

Yeah repcak, they have played Dyers Eve live. I don't know if they played 3-4-3-4-3-4 at 250 or whatnot, but they certainly played the whole thing without stopping. It's on video google.

repcak 06-30-2006 05:35 PM

i once read a guitar lesson by somebody from chopsfromhell.com and the one said that metallica never played it live ... well, you corrected me (and him)

edit: do you all know all notes on the fretboard? if you do, how did you learn them? by memorzing it (from a sheet), or by looking what note you play while playing a song?

Yeah he's wrong.

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=3068625888293548251&q=dyers+eve

_____________________________________________________________

The notes on the fretboard lol, I thought you meant the notes for Dyers Eve.

Um, I learn the notes in like my first month of playing, so I can't remember.

I worked it out with common sense. Every open string is its name (eadgbe), every 12th fret is the same (eadgbe). Every 5th fret is the same as the open string above (adgce - except the 5th on G string which is C instead of B, but then you remember that, so 4th on G = B)

Then just go from there. 1st fret is obviously going to be one note higher than the open string, so you kinda jsut know after a while. I never sat down and thought, I'm going to learn the notes.

You are. yeah, I did. There's nothing wrong with alt picking.

3-4 over and over at 250 isn't technical. Just fast and stupid.

MRDuCran 06-30-2006 06:48 PM

I didn't say there was anything wrong, but not many people can play it with only downstrokes.

And it's not 3-4 over and over, it's like 4 or 8 notes and that's it. I'm not going to continue because it's pointless.

Huber 06-30-2006 06:54 PM

Meh, this is why it's better to like the music, and not the people behind it. I love Metallica, one of my faves. I'm not in any place to say what kind of people they are and such because I do not know them, and as far as I'm concerned no one on this board does.

Metallica has made some good music over the years, whether you like it or not, I'd have trouble believing anyone who likes metal would really think it's bad music. Most people that do only do because they are scared of becoming cliche because Metallica is so popular.

Meh, there I said it. I couldn't let it rest without giving my 2 cents.

edit:
After reading my post I thought I should say this: Good or bad (music) is far different from like/dislike. If you think about it.

Then why pick a "pointless battle" in the first place?

Here's a list of hard **** I've failed at playing, since you prolly would like to hear.

The lead intro to Splintered Visions by Into Eternity.
Necrophagist- several songs stabwound and seven are the ones I remember
The arrpegio in Nemesis - Arch Enemy. I actually got that. It seriously took a month to learn and the song wasn't that fun to play, so I stopped.
There's a few things I can't think of. Basically sweeps and lightning fast leads/solo

Yes I understand they are very technical, but technicality is not all that matters in music to me, and I'm sure not to you either. I was just making a joke about them because I don't like their general sound. By saying "to each his own" I meant that I think they are utter crap, not that they are utter crap. I give Cannibal Corpse credit because they are good musicians for what they play, whether I like the sound of it or not. And like you, I'm not intending to start a flame war or anything, I was just joking around.

And for the record:
Children Of Bodom, Norther, Kalmah, Iron Maiden, Dragonforce, In Flames, Wintersun, Dimmu Borgir, Old Man's Child, Shadows Fall, Mors Principium Est, Iced Earth, Pantera, Racer X/Paul Gilbert, Opeth, Dark Tranquility, Black Label Society, Dio, Slayer, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Cradle Of Filth, Arch Enemy, and Amon Amarth are all metal that isnt metalcore.

I hope I didn't seem like I was being a douche bag or anything, just joking around as I usually do.
:chug:

EDIT: Yea that video was fun to watch even if I don't like their music much. They are very talented.

EDIT #2: That drum "warm up" vid was pretty insane too. The Gearge Parfitt one.

Fukk yes. Nooo way in hell I'd have a chance at that. I can play the first parts of the wretched spawn, but that's not very fast. chords plus a riff.

Cradle Of FIlth isn't metal. 'tis mallcore. Shadows Fall is NWONAHM or w/e it's called. aka more polished/skilled metalcore. Pantera isn't special. BLS= PH PH PH PH boring riff PH PH PH PH bad vox attempt PH PH PH and another PH!

The rest is good stuff.

Fair enough. You don't seem to like the extreme metal much. In fact, hardly any regs of this thread do. It seems at least.

The solo sections of Necrophagist are awesome, but the rest of their songs seem to random and chaotic for me. I used to like Nile because of the novelty of how fast their drummer is.

If you think Kollias is fast, try Derek Roddy's drumming in Hate Eternal.

Necrophagist's riffs are very calculated. Not chaotic at all. It's about as controlled and tight as it can get.

Their sweeps are insane.
