I did mention that last time this was brought up. No one seemed to want to mention it then either. It's quite funny, but obviously totally immature, Tool kinda grew up a lot with Lateralus.
Immature, yes.. But I actually find it kind of clever.. Heheh |
Exactly how I feel about Maynard. It's like he's two people in one. Weird, eh?
In Tool he hides how he looks with body-paint, wigs, weird clothing, stands in the dark or in front of a TV screen, etc. In APC, as they're more mainstream sounding he does similar things by wearing wigs and weird different clothing, glasses, etc. With APC he's even more the focus, so he goes to possibly greater lengths to protect his identity. Obviously two different acts, so two different images. He said he joked about feeling schizo after APC tours and such. |

He certainly acts like it though, but not like in an evil/good way. |
That's awfully presumptuous of you to say that. I think pretty much all religious music in Western culture was condemning Satan many centuries before Tool or rock music in general was formed.

That comment about Tool being the first to criticize Satan was wrong, but I don't think it was meant that they were the first in history. I think he meant more like they are always willing to come out and do so. It was just worded wrong I think.
He hit it right now the money. Thanks for that, my friend..
People like this were the reason I held off on visiting the Tool thread. I consider Tool to be a very good band, and one that I enjoy listening to, but their fans seem to have this cult surrounding the band. They twist the cryptic lyrics into this massive bombardment of spirituality and higher meaning that it really takes all the fun out of the music for me. Music doesn't HAVE to be a path to enlightenment, you can still enjoy it on many other levels without complicating things. I realize that Tool is a very complicated band, and by over-explaining things I'm just digging myself deeper and deeper, so I'll try to stop. Phew.
Now, I see this statement as being sort of short sighted.. Every song that enters our ears stir some sort of feeling or thought. Most Tool fans are just willing to explain their views. Like church goers or gospel singers...the songs they sing could just be uplifting songs, or they can take on deeper meaning for those who want the meaning.. The same applies to Tool songs. Some connect with music on different levels. Musicians hear notes and rythme. Artists here beautiful images and sound. Philosophers here truth or ideas. Thinkers hear thoughts and points of view. There is no shame in wanting to find a meaning in a music (in this case Tool), or understanding something in a different way than others.. The deeper you dig the more you learn, and this applies to anything.. Never take things for just what they are.. Question it.. Learn from it.. And maybe grow from it.. ~daniel |

There really shouldn't be any shame if you want to learn where their song references are from and what you think the songs are about, you can do a lot of digging with Tool, and thats great, some people really enjoy it. I'm sure 95% of people who post in this thread have wondered about the meanings behind one or more of their songs, and maybe had a bit of a think about it. So what? It dosn't make you some big dork, or some crazy person who thinks only they understand Tool, and that Tool are Gods that know all and pass it off in messages in their music. It's only when people get totally pretentious/obsessed that fans of ANY band become extremely silly. |

Well, that's what this guy is passing himself off as. It's not what he says, but how he is saying it that makes him look like the stereotypical holier-than-thou Tool fan. :-/ |

Yeah, he sounds on the line, dosn't he.. It's mostly just the silly pretention and talking like you're educating people with your ways and have reached enlightenment. I love reading song lyrics and analysing them and thinking about what they mean to me. People use these skills all the time in English classes to analyse texts and such, it's not that weird. And, for me, personally, they can help me to appreciate the songs more after I know what all the words are, and what the message of the song is about, and that dosn't just apply to Tool's music. Though, it's definately not essential, I really enjoy loads of songs I don't even know the words to. CoB comes to mind, hehe. There's no denying that Tool create deep songs (Deeper than most artists, lyrically), and I see no reason why people shouldn't explore them further if they enjoy doing so. |

I didn't get that kind of vibe from his comment at all. |

The funny thing is this.. I didn't specifically refer to just Tool. I refered to music in general.. You on the other hand keep making me out to be *just* a Tool fanboy. But that's fine. For some reason I always see people come onto this board and they have to try and make a distinction between themselves and the "weird tool fans", as if they are going to be thrown out of the popular club if they don't.. So they say that it's stupid to try and look into lyrics and music in fear that a pop-culture nazi will beat them upside the head. But what does it matter if someone does..? Then they come back and say, "Well, you're doing the exact same thing Tool tells you not to do, and over analyse!" Again...and? Music since the beginning of time was made to teach, stir feeling, stir thought, and tell stories. If a person just wants to listen to just music, put on some headphones, blast the techno/classical/soundtracks, and don't worry about lyrics.. Lyrics are words. Words have meaning. Therefore, there is always something to get from lyrics.. But you have your view and I have mine. I respect that. But you can't bash a person for finding a joy in listening to lyrics and music as a whole and getting something from it.. Thanks you to satchforever and Shadius for understanding.. ~daniel |
I have not been listening to tool lately, Im starting to find them boring :-/
Thats why I hardly come in here anymore.
This will change with the new album. |
This will change with the new album.
Most definately. I dont' listen to Tool as much as I used to, not that I find them boring at all, but because, in all fairness, they only have two albums out that I listen to very much. Undertow is an occaisonal listen for me, and I hardly even listen to Opiate anymore. I just need new material from them, becuase I don't want to burn myself out on Aenima and Lateralus. |
When I listened to Tool, Opiate got more spins then Undertow.
|
Undertow is oddly getting a few spins from me lately. It has has the least attention though, I must admit. I really want that new **** album again.
They owe us a frikkin' double disk at this stage, surely. |
This will change with the new album.
Yes, im sure they will be in my number 1 spot again (which was recently taken over by Porcupine Tree  )

Oh, yeah, the Live DVD would be MOST welcome by now as well. Waiting is so depressing. *sobs quietly* |

Thanks to me. What else have you gotten by them? If you still only have Deadwing, then ":amaze:." Huber- Here are some of the most wicked Tool wallpapers around, even though you didn't vote for me in the RMOTM. (:p) |
I have Deadwing and In Absentia, what album you rekon I should get next? I prefer Deadwing slightly to In Absentia.

I haven't been on much lately, as I've been supporting my volleyball team (w00t for spandex!) and cooking and extracting illegal chemicals in my AP Chem class. :p
Mike- Okay, my mom said that she will call the DSL people tomorrow, so be ready to YSI the OK show. :) Shadius- Most people would say Lightbulb Sun. If you want more of a psychadelic trip album, you should be able to find Voyage 34 at your record store, as it was just rereleased, meaning it will probably be in stock. |
Yes, thanks too you haha, Haven't seen you on lately mang. :p
Get In Absentia Now Then delve into the wonders of eleven years' worth of albums before that.
Yeah its hard to find in florida :) |
Yeah its hard to find in florida :)
Really, that's surprising. If there are any chain stores near you, like Tower, Virgin, etc., I'm sure you could find it. |
