Aside form the great guitar solo You Got Me would be a punk song. And I don't blame them for hating the music industry, it screws over quite a few people.
The solo in You Really Got Me was done by Jimmy Page. /factoid |
The solo in You Really Got Me was done by an old Bluesman, but Jimmy Page took credit for it.

/factoid
I didn't say written, I said done :p |
Are you implying that Jimmy Page is not a theif.
The solo in You Really Got Me was done by Jimmy Page.
/factoid
I've heard Dave Davies play it live so at least I know he's skilled enough to play the solo |

No, I'm just playing on words. Done can also equal played. |
No, I'm just playing on words. Done can also equal played.
Indeed ;) |
I have a history of rock book that has The Kinks listed as the first heavy metal band...I,m still unsure of how to respond to that.
|
They're not the first. They may have came up with the first Metal riff (more Hard Rock), but they were a Pop Rock band, overall that is.
|
It's all opinion as to what they created or what they were the first to do.
|
All that matters is they rock
|
Plus, I doubt many metal bands cite the Kinks as an influence.
|
 Yea
|
Have you ever heard those songs? You must've.
And where back. Yeah i've heard those songs, but I don't think they are that great. |
I don't understand why so many people call Jimmy Page a thief. Bob Dylan said in his book that a lot of his earlier songs were just covers of very obscure folk songs. he also said most of the songs he wrote on his earlier albums had melodies and chord progressions directly taken from folk songs. The only reason he didn't get caught is because a lot of the folk artists didn't have record contracts or anything, and they could rarely prove that they wrote a song. Bob Dylan managed to become known as one of the greatest songwriters of all time, and poor Jimmy Page is always referred to as a thief.
and Eric Clapton once wrote that most of his blues solos were mainly composed of licks taken from many different blues songs, and converted into the same key so he could use it for his songs. yet people still call him one of the greatest guitarists of all time. i'm not trying to argue or anything, i just want people to know that Jimmy Page isn't the only artist alive to borrow songs/riffs/lyrics. |
But Jimmy Page has a fanboy army behind him, and you know how elitists hate fanboys. :)
|
classic rock= rock and roll, non of these punk rock or grunge rock bands match up to the greats all they are , r over played power chords :@
|
all though i think Nirvana came close because they were pretty big
all though i think Nirvana came close because they were pretty big
Wow. Listen son, Nirvana was nothing special, and to compare them to classic rock greats, or even say they came close is blasphemy. |
But Jimmy Page has a fanboy army behind him, and you know how elitists hate fanboys. :)
Yeah most people probably bring the theif thing up again and again is to break the fanboys hearts and make them cry. I don't think he was a theif. |
I don't think J P was a thief either - he just took influences and adapted them to his music. He was a pretty darn awesome compositionalist.
I think Neil Young is the father of classic rock, actually. Or the grand-daddy. |

i've heard neil young referred to as the Godfather of Grunge before..at first i didn't really understand it, but i suppoes it makes sense. what do you guys think?
|
Well, like I said. Some of his songs sound like they're only ten years old.
He did have some grungy songs though, you're right about that. |
plus he dressed like a lumberjack...plaid (is that how you spell it?) seemed to be the clothing of choice for most grunge rockers.
so who did all the regulars vote for? i went with Californication. Led Zep 4 was going through anway, and Pet Sounds and the Yes album were losing badly, so i figured at least one good rock album should go through. |
I posted this in the main R&M section, but nobody paid any attention too it. So anyways have any of you heard of this guy.
http://www.nicksterling.com Watch him play the Sweet Child of Mine solo or Eruption |

I voted for Pet Sounds, best album on the list. |
it's weird, i was listening to Pet Sounds as I was voting, I kinda felt bad. I'm glad some people voted for Pet Sounds, because a lot of the more hard rock and metal bands put them down constantly, and that album is amazing. Brian Wilson is one of my favourite songwriters.

Well, chord progressions and melodies are commonly not original. A lot of bands come up with some and don't even no that they've been used. As for chord progressions, songs usually consist of basic chords like G, D, C, A and F. It isn't bad that two artists just so happen to have G, D and C inside of their song. But stealing a riff or phrase is a big thing. Jimmy Page did that, plus he was aware he was stealing. He took advantage of old Bluesmen who were ignorant to current copyright laws. |

The album, Ragged Glory will explain why he is indeed the godfather of grunge. |
