IMO Time Does Not Heal is the next best Dark Angel album. When an album comes with a label "9 songs, 67 minutes, 246 riffs!" you know it must be good
Then you have Leave Scars, which I am not so keen on, but is still worth getting. Just so you know, both these albums have a different vocalist to the guy on Darkness Descends. He is good, but he ain't no Don Doty. |
I wonder if someone can help me with some suggestions for bands like At The Drive In??
Cheers In advance. |
I wonder if someone can help me with some suggestions for bands like At The Drive In??
Cheers In advance.
The Mars Volta, obviously, Frank Zappa to some extent. |
Are either of those two really neo-classical? I really thought that meant acts like Yngwie Malmesteen.
Godspeed really are. I wouldn't describe malmsteens style as especially classical at all (try telling his fans that  ), but the said band use lots of violins, cellos, etc, combined with electric/standard rock instruments, which are often used in a semi-classical way. |
In addition to those two, try ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead, and their album Source Tags & Codes. Also, try Pink Flag by Wire. It doesn't sound absolutely like At The Drive-In, but it's an arty post-punk album, that kind of sounds a bit like what At The Drive-In could have sounded like at some stage.
Since you're around, would you mind suggesting a few Arcade Fire songs for me to check out. And also any other good trip-hop other than DJ Shadow, Fagan and Massive Attack. If you'd be so kind :) |
I'm guessing you're already aware of it, but if you haven't heard Ulver's Perdition City, then check that out. Cool trip-hop.
|
Fagan are pretty cool, though I've only heard a couple of songs by them, via Forced Listening. There's some other band that blue introduced me too, called Hot Rubber Elephant or something. I'll look the name up later, but that was some nice trip-hop.
Also, it's not quite trip-hop, but they share elements with it; Frou Frou. Don't be afraid of the stupid name. |
Jonny, yes, Arcade Fire is great. Bartender doesn't seem to think so, but I agree that the Neighbourhood songs are brilliant.
|
Funeral was one of the first albums I bought when I was in Florida. I listened to it, and it was alright, but most of the other things I bought seemed to outrank it, because it soon dropped out of my listening schedule there.

Can somebody reccomend me some good Meshuggah albums/songs other than I? Thanks.
|
Destroy, Erase, Improve is probably your best bet. That or Chaosphere.
If you want Meshuggah with a slightly different sound, you should try Contradictions, Collapse/None. |

I like Led Zep I.
Some good jazz metal: aghora sleep terror atheist counter world experience cynic ephel duath In my opinion the best album by led zeppelin is led zep III
I've never heard of Counter World Experience. What are they like/how good are they? |
I like Led Zep I.
I've never heard of Counter World Experience. What are they like/how good are they?
Sort of like Gordian Knot or At War With Self. Pretty heavily jazz influenced, although its as much hard rock as heavy metal in places. |
Looks like I'll be trying to check them out, then. Thanks.
|
Gordian Knot
I was looking at Dream Theater (Just wanted to see if they were metal :p) and apparantly John Myung has played bass for them? I had a quick look on metal-archives, but that didn't really explain anything more about them other then being an instrumental/progressive rock band. What kinda sound to they have? And what would be a good song of theirs to look into? :D Cheers, to anyone who responds! .. If this is the same band? :x |
Yes, that's the same band. John Myung has been known to play bass and Stick for them.
Gordian Knot aren't so much a band as a collective, or a project. It's all orchestrated mostly by Sean Malone (bassist/Stickler for Cynic), and draws on a whole host of incredibly talented musicians, including the three other members of Cynic at various times (the drummer, Sean Reinert, far more frequently than the others), John Myung (Dream Theater), Trey Gunn (King Crimson), Bill Bruford (King Crimson and others), Steve Hackett (Genesis), and so on. They have two albums, both instrumental and excellent. Their sound is kind of rock/metal fusion, hard to describe. For a song recommendation; Reflections, though you'd be hard pressed to go wrong. |
I think they have downloads on their official site. And 'When Solar Winds Collide' is still my favourite track by them.
EDIT: Yep, songs here under 'Sounds'. |
Thanks guys, I'll be sure to check them out later :thumb:
This could be taken as ignorant (And by all right, it is very ignorant), I've heard the name Cynic/Sean Malone tossed around quite a bit (Especially during the 100 best bassist comp if memory serves), but I have never heard anything by them... Could you point me in the right direction for them too? :D Cheers again. |

It's worth owning and it's praised by many people although I dont like it that much. |

I only have one song off that album, How Could I? Good stuff, Technical yet it retains a Melodic feel. |

Do you have any songs that you could share? |
can anyone recommend some death metal bands with good vocalists?
i've been listening to behemoth a lot lately (demigod), and the music is just amazing. then i hear the vocals and it sounds like he's screaming into a pillow. what i'm looking for is a clear brutal sound. vocalists i like: mikael akerfeldt (opeth) mikael stanne (dark tranquility) anders friden (whoracle era in flames) chuck shulinder (death) alexi laiho (follow the reaper era children of bodom) |
Atheist's vocals sound kind of like a more lethal Dave Mustaine, if that sounds promising. Going from your liking for Dark Tranquillity and In Flames, check out At the Gates. And Children of Bodom aren't death metal, but if you like them check out Kalmah.
Report back with your findings and more can be recommended. |
I believe Bloodbath had/has the Opeth singer.
|
yah bodom aren't death metal, i was just using alexi as an example of a screamer i like.
while mustaine's vocals are some of my least favorite, i'll give atheist a try since lethality (if that's a word) is what dave's lack for me. i've heard good things about at the gates and kalmah as well. and thank's to chu for reminding me to check out bloodbath. |
