Ummagumma is my favorite, enjoy.
And I did. :) |
HMV is a music store, and yeah, they seem to have a habit of marking down Pink Floyd albums at a moment's notice. Good news for me, when I was still collecting them. The Wall for 20 bucks Australian.
That is good, mine was $30 second hand. It is on vinyl however. |
Nice. I have vinyl and CD, but the Vinyl is my mum's copy, heh.
|
I've bought Atom Heart Mother yesterday, one of their best :)
|

My Dad says he has his old vinyls stashed away somewhere. I want to find them, I hope there's some Floyd in there :( |
my parents sold all their old vinyl albums. floyd zeppelin etc. doesn't matter. for something like darkside you want the best quality version possible; vinyls nice and nostaligc, but digital remastered darkside of the moon is so much better
I've bought Atom Heart Mother yesterday, one of their best
lies |
I also bought:
A Saucerful of Secrets March Into The Sea EP - Pelican Bringing It All Back Home - Bob Dylan Then, as it was my Birthday I got: Pet Sounds 40th Anniversary Limited Edition Fuzzy Case CD+DVD - The Beach Boys (duh) Revolver and Sgt. Peppers which will remain unopened kekeke I don't need to open them anyways, I have every Beatles on CD and Vinyl :D |
Actually its well noted that Analogue technology such as vinyl has a much better sound quality. It has the "warmer" feel to it most people look for as well as being truer to the original recording. |
Haha as if i've only just noticed this thread, anyway, top 10 albums :)
1. The Wall 2. Animals 3. Wish You Were Here 4. The Division Bell 5. A Momentary Lapse Of Reason 6. Dark Side Of The Moon 7. Meddle 8. Piper At The Gates Of Dawn 9. Atom Heart Mother 10. Saucerful Of Secrets That's my top 10, although i can never decide between Saucerful and Obscured By Clouds. I can safely say though that the only Floyd album i truly don't like is The Final Cut, to me it just comes across as a Waters solo album than a group effort. Whcih according to Nick Mason in Inside Out is pretty much the case. |
Bringing It All Back Home - Bob Dylan
such a good album
Actually its well noted that Analogue technology such as vinyl has a much better sound quality. It has the "warmer" feel to it most people look for as well as being truer to the original recording.
thats the subjective side. i'm referring to the more, for want of a better word, scientific side, i.e. the quality is more audible - e.g. compare a tape to a cd. on the cd you will get less hiss, more clearly defined sound and a generally clearer sound. now admittedly, on some albums this is irrellevant, and like you said, many appreciate the sound of vinyl in general. but and this is more specific to darkside, the sound quality benefits from cd and better communication. for example, the faint strains of a beatles song on the outro are barely audible on the vinyl version, but just able to be heard on the digital versions. in cases like this, the subtlety of the record is bought to the forefront. this is why darkside was so often used as a means of testing a new stereo system. people would play the album searching for the 'better' sound quality.
1. The Wall 2. Animals 3. Wish You Were Here 4. The Division Bell 5. A Momentary Lapse Of Reason 6. Dark Side Of The Moon 7. Meddle 8. Piper At The Gates Of Dawn 9. Atom Heart Mother 10. Saucerful Of Secrets
odd that you should like those three the most, and then dislike the final cut. the wall was very nearly a solo effort from waters as well. still a nice list. though i still don't see why everyone ikes atom heart mother. |
ugh the whole vinyl vs cd battle is ever on going. I personally prefer CDs, for their cleaner, crisper sound, but others still swear by vinyl. It is true however that vinyl does have greater dynamics, where as CDs use different ways and algorithms for compression.
Alot of people like vinyl too, because that would have been the original release, and with some of these remasters, the producers have just raped the sound to no end. |
true. might as well just leave it at personal perference.
|
though i still don't see why everyone ikes atom heart mother.
I just like it and that's all there is to it really, but I pretty much like all their albums:p . And I especially like Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast, it puts me in a trance. So why don't you like it? |
I don't like it because the album is way to boring. The opening track goes through some interesting phases, yet there isn't enough substance to keep me interested. I like the funky section of the song, but nothing exciting happens and the song has a weak climax. The same thing can be said for the closing song.
If and Fat Old Sun are just to dull and uninteresting. The sluggish tempo of Fat Old Sun is a snoozefest and the solo seems very out of place. While If isn't exactly a bad song it doesn't seem to go anywhere and is lyrically boring. The only tune that I can really enjoy is Summer '68 and that's because I'm a sucker for chilled out piano parts. Atom Heart Mother shows off some interesting ideas but they just don't come together. It's very frustrating because it could have been an amazing album if Pink Floyd would have done a few things differently. |

Still I fully understand that it's down to personal preference. CD's are much more conveniant as well. |
Yeah, that's all it is. Same thing goes for tube pre-amps in stereo equiptment. Some people swear by them, and others just stay the hell away.

Wakey, wakey!
So I've begun writing a review for The Final Cut. I didn't realise writing a review for Pink Floyd was actually more difficult than I thought. Careful balancing must be placed between discussing the concept and musical content! I'm thinking of giving it an unbiased 3.5, by the way. Even though it's possibly my favourite, it's certainly not perfect! |
I finally got Obscured By Clouds. I haven't given it a listen yet, though I will when Shine On finishes.
|
Excellent. OBC is probably my favourite album pre-'75.
Such a great mix of slow, thoughtful songs and fun, upbeat rock and roll. |
Now I only need The Final Cut and Division Bell to complete my Floyd collection.
if my library doesn't have them I don't know what I'll do though :o |

...Atom Heart Mother shows off some interesting ideas but they just don't come together. It's very frustrating because it could have been an amazing album if Pink Floyd would have done a few things differently.
You're right, it is boring. I guess I like the fact that it is so anti-climactic. The opening track doesn't really do it for me but the rest of the album is just beautiful in my opinion. Something about the piano in Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast reminds me of the score to Nosferatu. I'm not sure why. |

To hell with you! Digital is way worse quality than vinyl because it takes samples of the sound, while vinyl has the whole, smooth, unadulterated sound. I don't give a fuck if it's got a few crackles and pops (in fact, that gives the music way more character than your squeaky-clean mp3s), it's still far superior because it is an analog sound. EDIT: I see I'm a little late. |
Although I'm not as passionate about it (haha), I agree with the vinyl sound. The warmer sound is nice :)
Let's hear it for OBC! |
meh
true. might as well just leave it at personal perference.
|
i need to get obscured by clouds
|
Is Obscured by Clouds one of the movie soundtracks?
|
Yeah.
|
Yes, it is the soundtrack for La Vallee, a very arty indie film that is fairly mediocre.
|
So does these soundtracks still stand out as good albums or do I need to see the movie to get the most out of them?
|
No, the soundtracks are way better to listen to without the movie.
|
I may just perchase OBC next. Seems to get a good rap here.
|
more people should get Amused To Death.
its up there with the best of floyd, and waters' lyrics have moved so far beyond much he did with floyd. |
Obscured By Clouds is a very good album. Its a different sound than what most people think of Pink Floyd, and I love it.
"Stay" is one of my favorite Floyd songs. Rick Wright ftw! |
OBC was one of the first albums I bought without hearing it somewhere else first. I must say I was happy with my purchase. You guys should enjoy it.
|
more people should get Amused To Death.
its up there with the best of floyd, and waters' lyrics have moved so far beyond much he did with floyd.
I don't think he's improved that dramatically. His lyrical work on albums like Animals and The Final Cut are just as incredible for me. Amused to Death is a brilliant album, too. |
i've always preffered floyd after sid barret "left", i love the division bell. However i think animals is waaaaay too lyrically based, and the music suffers somewhat. Its like the music was written around the lyrics, which i know gilmour was opposed to. I also think the wall is overrated, some epic songs on there, mother is a particular favourite (THAT solo!). My favourite 3 albums are:
DOTM WYWH Division bell |
I don't think he's improved that dramatically. His lyrical work on albums like Animals and The Final Cut are just as incredible for me.
Amused to Death is a brilliant album, too.
animals and the final cut have their moments, but some of it is a bit cringe worthy, a bit cliche and a bit too biased politically. still very good, mostly well written albums. |
Animals is kind of really boring.
|
Animals is kind of really boring.
I've been saying this forever now; it sounds like any prog band band could've pulled that off. Although I really like the concept, the lyrics do not impress me. A very diappointing album and certainly not on the leval of DSOTM or WYWH.
|
It's definatly not their most impressive of works, but I think it's totally redeemed by Dogs (that riff!) and Pigs (three different ones). I also find Pigs on the wing 1 & 2 to be a cool little intro/outro thing.
