Brighter Death Now - Obsessis
Prurient - Shipwrecker's Diary

Since you've already heard Brethren some reasonably aggressive power electronics, might fit the bill.

Jaundice 03-21-2010 03:07 PM

Man is the Bastard, Throbbing Gristle, Ministry
Need some BM with riffs. No Transilvanian Hunger sounding stuff. I'm bored to tears by that **** at the moment.
listen to heresi's psalm II if you havent already. one of my all time fav black metal albums. brings the RIFFS and has perfect production.

Jaundice 03-21-2010 06:47 PM

ok since when is it even remotely acceptable to make black metal that doesn't sound like it was recorded on a tape deck in the fifties

thats like Dimmu Borger antics

Nepenthe 03-21-2010 06:48 PM

oh my god shut up

Jaundice 03-21-2010 06:51 PM

umm black metal isn't like death metal it takes influence from lo-fi and anti-art

Happymeal 03-21-2010 11:04 PM

can anyone suggest other throwback bands similar to Midnight (as in, Complete and Total ****ing Midnight Midnight)?

Should have rec'd Brethren. ;)

Meatplow 03-22-2010 01:09 AM

like I said in that post he has already heard it though

I need more BM in the vein of the following -

Immortal - Cryptic Winterstorms - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5zO_3RvBJkM
Beherit - Sadomatic Rites http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zNGyJok0YDI

There is a quality to it I can't describe, think more in terms of muddy production and riffs and we'll be talking (ignore the acoustic guitars in the first track). I've got most of the popular Norwegian bands covered.

illmitch 03-22-2010 01:15 AM

Blasphemy - Fallen Angel of Doom
it's a lot more intense/extreme but they were a big influence on beherit
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o6e0Nrlr_jg

Von - Satanic Blood Angel
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=McoZ3yiYGG8

will do some more digging through my black metal and give you more recs

Meatplow 03-22-2010 01:18 AM

thanks man, appreciated

Valorous MXicans, stout (hipster) of heart, unfaltering of will (short attention span), I call upon your help in this hour of need.

Hither and thither have I looked to no avail. For a band I seek. One of the kind that us mortals call black metal. A band that specifically features violins or cellos or flutes or all of these together. And to accompany these mournful hymns shall I prefer screeching wails from the depths of Dungortheb. Production quality matters not, as "raw" when spelled backwards says "war". To whom other than my MXican kindred do I turn..?

Tyler 03-22-2010 01:27 PM

I think I'm going to ban you if you keep posting like that.

Morumbar 03-22-2010 01:52 PM

Lol, couldn't resist. Suddenly came into my head. So anyone know any black metal with violins or cellos? Or maybe even flutes, but I'd prefer the former.

Tyler 03-22-2010 01:53 PM

Hellveto

pretty much any sympho dude. though it seems like no one likes that kind 'round these parts

Morumbar 03-22-2010 02:09 PM

Hm, Hellveto sounds pretty cool. But I kind of meant more like one or two violin melody lines at a time instead of a full orchestral string section. Anything like that?

besides the obvious choice of apocalyptica, i can't think of any that use a small amount of instruments.

hermh has a good bass vocalist. like deep opera style, mixed in with BM shrieks. pretty good stuff

Tyler 03-22-2010 02:15 PM

Apocalyptica aren't black metal

Nepenthe 03-22-2010 02:15 PM

what does that have to do with a violin

Morumbar 03-22-2010 02:17 PM

I mean something in the vein of http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pb3jD1h5zfE.

Well, the intro anyway.

But like with the violins more present in the rest of the music as well.

Meatplow 03-22-2010 03:04 PM

Hellveto's Zmierch is great.

You could try Kadenzza's The Second Renaissance but I don't know if it is exactly what you are after

RetiredAt21 03-22-2010 07:04 PM

First song on Paysage d'Hiver's s/t has a violin in it.
