I just got Aenima by tool and I wasn't terribly impressed. Id probably give it 7/10. It's a good album, but I think it's not as great as everyone says. Unless it takes some time getting used to?
Well if you've heard Lateralus before listening to Aenima, I can see why.

It's more accessable than Lateralus, but some songs might take a while to "get", notabley Pushit and Third Eye. If it helps, skip the filler tracks so you listen to the best parts of the album; the actual songs.

If you like Stinkfist, which was the first "single" (The most accessable song on there), I see no reason why you shouldn't like stuff like Eulogy, 46&2 or Ænima after a few listens. H. is a brilliant song too, it's all in the slow melodic buildup and climax.

Argueably this contains Tool's best songs, though perhaps isn't the best cohesive effort due to all the filler. I skip tracks on Ænima, and don't on Lateralus, but I think the individual songwriting on Ænima is generally better.

Mizuzack 09-23-2005 08:07 AM

They definitely are growing on me. I might pick up that album you are talking about. Tool sort of remind me of all the styles of Metallica mixed into one. (The guitars I mean).

I'm geussing you're talking about Metallica's new stuff? Tool doesn't tremelo pick.

Well I tried uploading Part 1 again, and again it didn't work. So, I'll try again tonight.

Shadius 09-23-2005 09:40 AM

Of the OK show? If you could you'd be a saint. (:

ThePatient 09-23-2005 09:58 AM

That's the one. If it doesn't work tonight I'm going to wait a few days before I try again.

Darkness 09-23-2005 12:04 PM

I could upload again if you really want me to. It will only take me about 3 1/2 hours.

mudvayne420 09-23-2005 12:46 PM

sup tool fans, i have a question to ask.
does anybody know what kind of pickups JC uses on his bass?

YouGottaBeCrazy 09-23-2005 12:52 PM

I had a really long dream last night, but I can only remember one small part to it. For some reason, in my dream, I found out what L.K. stood for. It was something really, really long. It's pissing me off that I can't remember what exactly it stood for. It was 2 words and both were really odd words.

jamesclelland 09-23-2005 01:46 PM
AEnima takes a few listens. Just gotta keep listening until you find those great moments in the songs that stand out to you, and soon enough you'll fall in love.
i didn't get into it till i started to listen to each instrument individually and together at once. you need to hear the way they present themselves.

YouGottaBeCrazy 09-23-2005 02:41 PM

I still don't get why people are so big on H. It seems pretty mediocre to me.

Jimbobntnr 09-23-2005 03:09 PM

H is lyrically a very powerful song. I think that as one of the less musical pieces on this album we are forced to hear what ole maynard is saying.
To me it is about the complete acceptance of the potential threats involved in trusting someone, again:
And as the walls come down and
As I look in your eyes
My fear begins to fade
Recalling all of the times
I have died
and will die.
It's all right.
I don't mind.

Once you accept the worst possible outcome, there is no longer fear.

Yeah, I like the lyrics quite a bit, and I DO like the song, but I hardly listen to it as much as I listen to Pu**** or Aenema or 46 and 2.

 its ok, it was just kinda annoying. The quality is great on the show, the camra goes in some positions (eg: zooms in on Maynad during the drum solo in The Grudge). I may burn it to dvd, if so I'll inform you.

And sure Jake, I'll wait for you.

YouGottaBeCrazy 09-23-2005 04:18 PM

Maynard isn't top notch in every song on the OK show. That's really one of my only complaints. His voice sounds weak in Reflection and The Grudge, and a few others.

BlindWriting 09-23-2005 04:25 PM

Maynard didn't scream like he does on recording. I was kind of disappoionted by his performance in Part of Me, he just wasn't doing those awesome screams.

And H. is a fantastic song, vocally and lyrically beautiful. The big heavy part after the "I don't miiiiiiiiiiiiind!!!" is killer.

Red Cow 09-23-2005 04:25 PM

Hey is anyone eles here a drummer? I just want to tel anyone thats interestd that Dannys sig sticks are amazen!

BlindWriting 09-23-2005 04:26 PM

Yeah, I'm a drummer. I've never tried Danny's sticks, they're Pro-Mark?

repcak 09-23-2005 04:27 PM

äh... can you wait for me too?
now i am at home and we have a limited internet connection so i can't download much.
October i will move to study and i will have an unlimited connection with the 2/3rd october... is this possible?

Darkness 09-23-2005 04:32 PM

Yeah I'll wait.

And Blind they don't play Part Of Me on the OK show. His voice is a little weak on The Grudge, but that scream still gets me going.

Red Cow 09-23-2005 04:35 PM
Yeah, I'm a drummer. I've never tried Danny's sticks, they're Pro-Mark?
Na Vic Firth with a cool kinad taperd grip, they are realy realy good(im obiously not going to say ther not but seriously i love em!) :)

Rothmans 09-23-2005 04:41 PM

I find it strange how everyone rape's H. so much yeah its great lyrically and all but still.

Also omfg when you learn Eulogy on guitar its depressing even to listen to it, it's so boring to play.

Also Jimmy is the best song by FAR on Aenima for me nowaday's probably tomorrow though I will say I hate it. I love that song though it's about maynard being molested when he was eleven wasnt it?

Did you ever read that story some guy wrote bout the song Jimmy?with the charcter 11?

Rothmans 09-23-2005 04:51 PM

All I know is it was when it was eleven and all I would write what I think but I am too tired and drunk (sobered up a good bit now though) to say I might tomorrow but I really like Maynard's voice in this song.

Shadius 09-23-2005 04:56 PM

I've seen H. played amazingly well on a live video, it's a great song. Turn it up, the bassline and everything is really cool, and just how it builds up and explodes, lyrics or not. I couldn't call it mediocre, it's quite original sounding and I very much enjoy it.

jimmy is one of my least favourite songs on Ænima, but to each their own.

Any word on the OK show?

One Groovin Clown 09-23-2005 04:56 PM

I think like many people here, my favorite tool album rotates between Aenima and Laturalis. One thing that really attracts me to Aenima is the two different styles in the songs. You can easily tell which songs justin wrote and wich ones Paul wrote. I love that about the album, the diversity gets me all they time.
