Yah that was the bass player for APC. Still plays bass in some songs.
Have they ever done that kind of thing on previous albums? It just seems to be a really fragmented way of recording, if that's how they normally do it, although I guess it seems to work for them...
Lateralus was wrote like that. And it came out ok as we know

Tool base all there songs and meanings around tim leary, lachrymology, and manyards past expierences.

Magicaltroll 12-12-2004 01:42 PM
I disagree. Tool didn't do it any better than Zeppelin, but they did offer a very new take on it. I woulda liked it better if Maynard hadn't covered his voice with effects for a good part of the song.

Don't get me wrong, I love the Tool version, but you can't really compare it IMO. Zeppelin were not newbies...
thats why i like when they cover songs or change songs (example- the emotive album had some very interesting approaches to the songs on it, no quarter, salival version of pushi.t). i really enjoy listening to the covers tool did on salival. emotive was ok too, i wasnt to into it though.

And anal love

and Enchonian

and religion

and numerous other things. Its not fair to classify that they stick to a set amount of topics.

Next album, Maynard may start writing about how his high school girlfriends left him, and how his parents abused him..........thats right guys...

jamesclelland 12-12-2004 01:49 PM

what? tool is not emo. They write using metaphors. not about anal fisting about desensetizing. Not about jesus about anyone who has done that sort of thing. to say tool is going emo offends me, and i'm thinking you need to s.m.p. look at the lyrics and listen to every song. maynard doesn't let you get away with the meaning of the songs from hearing tool in the background on the radio.

What is the rest of the peach album like?

Adam Jones is GOD 12-12-2004 02:14 PM

Similar to You Lied. they have their slower songs, their quick songs, and their 'more epic' tracks.

And they do a cover of an unknown old British band (never got signed, dont know the name) called Catfood, which has some very weird lyrics

I've got some questions

Hi. Please don't attack me if these questions have already been answered on here. Just let me know and I'll find them myself.

- When and why did Maynard start using the name 'Maynard'?

- If you think he was molested, which I do, who do you think did it?

- I read on the Tool faq's on their site that Maynard has said in the past that he didn't like his stepfather. Anyone know anymore about that?

- How long was he involved with the mother of his son?

- Do you know anything about his current girlfriend?

Thanks! :p

ThePatient 12-13-2004 12:21 PM

His name is Maynard James Keenan.

I don't anything about the other questions, but if its true, #2 could be linked to #3. Again, I've never heard that so I'm not saying he was.

The JoZ 12-13-2004 12:35 PM

No, his name is James Herbert Keenan. I personally have no idea when he adopted the Maynard moniker, but it is possible he did that so he can try and have a life outside of Tool.

He started calling himself Maynard becuase Maynard is his favorite war hero (he went to military school), I am not sure if he got molested, and I don't know anything about the other questions.

I think his stepfather beat him. And he got "Maynard" from military school. I think if he got molested it was his stepfather. Don't know anything bout Maynard's love life.

As far as i know, Maynard is happily married, but this was from hearing things a long time ago (and various groupie friend's personal accounts also say otherwise :thumb: ). We all know that Adam has the coolest wife in any case

(I always thought he got his name from the wine gums, but I think that was just a personal desire, as both rock so hard :D )

Gee, a well founded and justified post that was...

To give this post a point, over the last weekend I was out having a few drinks, talking about Tool with a mate. Anyway, he had just recently bought Opiate, and he told me that the very first time he listened to it all the way through (no skipping), his cd player switched itself off, which shouldn't have happened, it should have skipped to the next cd. Anyway, he tried doing this again and couldn't get it to happen again. I'm pretty skeptical about it, but was this some trick of Tool's that only occurs the first time the cd is played fully?

antonmb 12-14-2004 06:00 AM

46 and 2 repeats on my CD every once in a while, by itself.

Lachrymology is a hoax. :) And so is Tool's belief in it. Maynard is just playing dirty tricks on us.

Henry Rollins

Track: Eulogy
Album: Aenima

This is what the song means to me.. I could be right, I could be wrong.. Usually with TOOL there is no wrong answer. Anyways!

Here is the dictionary Definition of Eulogy:

Eulogy - A laudatory speech or written tribute, especially one praising someone who has died.?

This song can be used towards anyone with power, such as a dictator, president, GOD, etc..
For conversation sake, lets use god. Maynard takes a sarcastic approach in this track, going back and fourth
From being serious, back to sarcastic remarks, lets look at how the song starts

Eulogy Being the bible in this case.

He had alot to say.
He had alot of nothing to say.
We'll miss him.

So long.
We wish you well.
You told us how you weren't afraid to die.
Well then, so long.
Don't cry.
Or feel too down.
Not all martyrs see divinity.
But at least you tried.

Standing above the crowd,
He had a voice that was strong and loud.
We'll miss him.
Ranting and pointing his finger
At everything but his heart.
We'll miss him.

Maynard sets the theme, of someone powerful standing over a crowd.. I picture the time of Christ, people in robes, with god preaching to people hungry for the word of god. Yet all he is saying was just a waste of breath, a waste of time. Hence Not all martyrs see divinity, But at least you tried.â I picture this good ol cartoon act. the devil on one shoulder and an angel on the other, arguing between each other, just for better understanding. Hence he had a lot to say then he had a lot of nothing to say. The last verse make me picture god, because if you have ever read the bible it describes, that no one is perfect, but Christ. ranting and pointing his finger at everything but his heart.

Standing above the crowd,
He had a voice so strong and loud and I
Swallowed his facade cuz I'm so
Eager to identify with
Someone above the ground,
Someone who seemed to feel the same,
Someone prepared to lead the way, with
Someone who would die for me.

Back to the devil/angel theory.. This person is lost, so he looks for someone to lead the way for eternity. Some one that could relate to him. And someone above the ground (all the features of Christ) so this person believes in christ, for help. For guidance, yet he is stabbed in the back rather then being at peace.
Facade, stands for a face of a building as in God shows his face, all beautiful and perfect, but when you enter the building its thrashed and messy

Will you? Will you now?
Would you die for me?
Don't you f*ckin lie.

Don't you step out of line.
Don't you f*ckin lie.

The messy building reflects his lies.. Picture it as if the person has fallen for the beginning message, yet finds out everything he knew or was told were all lies.

Come down.
Get off your f*ckin cross.
We need the f*ckin space to nail the next fool martyr.

To ascend you must die.
You must be crucified
For your sins and your lies.
Goodbye...

I feel this is after he understands that you dont have to be a follower to have eternal happiness. And is somewhat just making fun of the whole situation.

Welp.. there it is hopefully it makes sense, it does to me. And like I has said before I could be totally wrong.

I heard it has to do with Henry Rollins. You guys seem to think Tool writes all about God, and I don't believe they do. They may use biblical metaphors, but most of these are about personal things. Stinkfist seems to be about a member of the band taking a brief break from drugs and how that changed his life... I feel that it kind of segues into Eulogy that way. H. also. By the way... H. IS NOT ABOUT HEROIN. Just had to let people know.

Henry Rollins has nothing to do with tool except he does the speech on bottom. Interesting theory on stinkfist though. I haven't heard that one yet, could fit though. i have a theory on H. it's rough, and a complicated song so bear with me.
He has the whole angel and devil thing going here. the snake on one side which tells to do the wrong thing, and his blood(heart, soul whatever you call it) which is obviously saying do it the other way. to me it sounds like a life or death kind of situation. to the point now, i think that he is talking about somebody who is comtemplating suicide and cant decide whether to take the temptation to end this misery now, or whether to stick though it and see whats next. and it seems another view comes up where somebody has left such an impression on him, means so much to him(lover of somekind?), that he just can't do it.
Obviously him and he isn't maynard, but like jimmy where it he gives the impression it's him but really it's for everyone to relate too.

Wow, a lot of great posts on this page......

Right, to the spammer idiot with the R&M song reference, SFK will be with you shortly

As for the post 2 posts above me, it has been said many, many times, NO ONE IS WRONG WITH TOOL LYRIC INTERPRETATIONS! Some may be more bizarre than others, but even when MJK (though he wont) comes out with full meanings to all their songs, it still wont matter, its what people get from the songs.

How would you feel if you were suddenly told the way you live your life was wrong, and you had to change from this day? Thats how some people would feel with lyric interpretations.

I wont argue with your views on their songs, but I will question your objection to others

Otherside 12-14-2004 04:06 PM

Taken from the official Tool website:

"After selecting some samples on the “Deep Violet” electronic drums and adjusting parameters, etc., the band launched into a new song that, at least in my mind, pretty much summed things up about the direction the new record was headed musically. To say that they have taken it up a notch would be an understatement. Several notches, perhaps, might better describe it. This wasn’t just the musical equivalent of terra incognita – this was something borderline Zothyrian, Daedalian in complexity (yet, VERY heavy) with its combination of odd time signatures, dynamics and intricacy of guitar work that was ‘synchronized’ in sections to create those “chromatic tortures” we all love so much. Danny was doing what he does best (better than ever, I might add), and the acoustic drums were combined with lots of electronic samples of dissonant clocks, warped timpani, eruptions of noise and explosions of what sounded like bizarre artillery."

I can't fucking wait.
