Cocteau Twins - Aloysius
Heard of but not by. Can't pronounce name of band. Good sign. Begins with a chorus heavy guitar and small drums. I might be able to diggit so long as it doesn't go 80's pop all over the place. Woah, I really like the vocals. Female with a ton of delay and reverb so I can't really understand the words. It has 80fied itself but I still like it. Odd. I am really like this. It's repetitive but not badly so. It makes me think almost of a musical. A pop musical. A Popsicle. heh, I'm funny. I wonder what she's saying. I really like the vocal part. It's catchy but not lame. Well, I don't have a lot to say. It was pretty repetitive but was good at the same time. I like the vocals best and the drum sound the least. The guitars were fine even with all that chorus. Musically I suppose it was fine. Catchy but not cheesy, repetitive but didn;'t get old. Well done in the end. 7.5/10 and I'll listen to more. DieCiS1e7E - Zoe
Never heard of or by. Begins with a very rock and roll riff and drum part. I can see driving to this music. It has me bobbing my head after less than 15 seconds. Cool. The bass line is very good. Let me rephrase that, the bass fills are very good. Heh, the Spanish. It fits well, although when I think rock and roll plus Spanish I get a more Tex Mex vision in my mind. I really like it. It grooves along nicely and don't let up. The guitarist is just improv soloing in the background and it sounds good. Fits well. THere is an almost metal bridge. SOmething you could find in a Dream Theater song but DT would use a more complicated time sig. The bassist is good. I like how this song is nicely technical but not too much so and very catchy. Almost punk catchy. I would love to see this band live just to jump up and down and cheer with a big smile on my face. Very feel good sounding and who knows or cares about the vocals. I really like how this metal bridge contrasts the song without being grating. And it is the outro. Cool, nice way to end the song, on a pinch harmonic. Very nicely done. Shame their name is so retarded. 8/10 Sleepytime Gorilla Museum - The Donkey-Headed Adversary of Humanity Avant garde . whats the closest Genre to the Mr Bungle stuff?
Avant garde + rediculous + do whatever the hell we want to + Patton
Yeah, there's a reason I didn't put a genre up there. Chu - you do know you can't review a song you've already heard? Dibs. |
Chu - you do know you can't review a song you've already heard?
Well I didn't know that, but that sucks :p My download is gay, and I have plenty of music I *Really* like, but is pretty much unknown to the rest of the world (An example is Xavier Rudd). It makes sense, but.. It's just not fair :p |
I've reviewed Xavier Rudd in a different Forced Listening before. A while ago now. The song was 9 Times a Day, and I think I gave it 9.5/10.
I might have heard these guys before. If I have, then I've forgotten, which can't be good. Elvenking - The Silk Dilemma - 4:19 Starts off with some decently heavy, though not too rough-edged, guitar, and a very nice *insert folky stringed instrument here* fiddling away nice and quickly over the top. Excellent start, as far as I'm concerned. Starts off with a regular beat, a decent riff (which is very much not the focus of this part of the song; the (various, I think) stringed instruments are), and it's basically so far catchy and awesome. Guitars drop away to allow for a gentle break, with some gentler fiddling and what might be a flute in he background, unless my mind is playing tricks on me. It's all got a very medieval court feel to it so far, actually. The vocals come in, and he's got a good clean voice. I'm not sure what technical term might be applied to it, but from listening to it I get the feeling he sang it with his shirt off. Probably in a wood somewhere. It's not faux-operatic, all-ahead bombast, as it's just his one voice, but it's a very commanding voice; not in a frightening, drill sergeant-way, but the kind of voice a minstrel might have - the kind that holds attention whilst telling stories around a fire. Anyway, good voice. A female vocalist joins him, semmingly momentarily; for a moment I thought she was going to be a disaster, but she soon straightens up. And all the while there's that insanely catchy folk bit going on through the background. Just passed two minutes, and we have another gentle break, during which I really notice the bass for the first time for some reason. A female voice joins his when he comes back in, subservient to his but still noticeable, before he's joined for the first time by a chorus of voices behind him. It's only for a moment, but for that moment he gets somewhat closer to that all-ahead bombast I was talking about before. Most of the rest of the music then drops away for some slightly militaristic drumming and slightly Spanish-sounding guitar. I think this is the bit where, if we were in a medieval court, they would be dancing. And the song just finishes by switching from part to part a couple more times, ending on a flourish (and what sounds like a bell?). 9.5/10 Well that was just awesome. Catchy, uplifting, triumphant. Good stuff. Could I dibs William Shatner because I already have that song? :)
|
Well if you already have it, it kind of defeats the point of the thread. Besides which, Grateful Dead already has dibs.
|
It came with a Triple J hottest 100 CD I got ages ago :D
I posted the dibs at the same time as him I guess. I'm kinda whoring this thread (Leaving it open) so I usually read a post the second it comes out. |
I do love that song. Also, I can't believe you stole both the 2,000th post and 2,000th reply :)

I like Oasis, but I don't think I've heard this song.
Oasis - Acquiesce - 4:24 Starts off with some faint background strumming and someone singing a note; swiftly interrupted by a much louder, distorted riff. A nice start for the song, though it just as soon goes back to what it started on. This happens a few times, before a downwards spiralling guitar from the right speaker signals the entry of the whole band, and the development of that distorted riff into a proper verse riff. Vocals come in, sounding like typical Oasis, with the line "I don't know what it is that makes me feel alive". Not sure why I've noted that, I just quite liked it. The riff is a good one. Pretty simple, but catchy, and supports the song well, basically. Bit of extra percussion around 1:10, just before what I assume will be the chorus. The Other Brother (Noel? I can never remember which is which) comes in to sing on the chorus, which is a bit of a surprise, as I'm rather used to just one of the two singing throughout a song. It's probably a good thing that he's come in for the chorus though, since he has the better technical voice and it's a sung line. Rather predictable rhyming of "each other" and "one another", but since I'm enjoying the song, it just seems to add to its charm, rather than being annoying. Chorus ends, and we're straight back into the rougher vocals of the verse. I think I prefer the verse to the chorus; seems to be a repeating pattern with Oasis, as there verses have great flow. Another chorus, shortly after. Nice swell of music before it starts. Lots of repetitions of bits of the chorus now, and it sounds like the song is winding down. And it is; it all kind of slowly comes apart and stops. 8/10. I enjoyed it for the most part, but I think the end was a bit disappointing. With a full minute left to go I was expecting something more. Bartender, could you possibly put up a different William Shatner song?
I have that one, and as you have said, I can't review it, but I actually like that song, so wouldn't mind hearing/reviewing a different song by him. |

Rufus Wainwright-14th street.
Well it starts with some clean chords on guitar and piano and then the guys voice kicks in. Rufus' voice aint the greatest I have heard but still sounds good. The chorus I love a lot very great with the girls voice adding alot to it imo. With a nice line "why did you have to brake my heart" (I think). I like his voice alot more on the chorus The brass bit is nice aswell in the 2nd verse. The chorus hits in again and it gets extended and even better each time I listen to this song it gets alot better and now when I listen to it the track quiets down and now back up again with jus tthe gilrs voice which is very nice in my humble opinion. Now the song ends with a few notes on the banjo which I thought was clever all in all a 7/10. Sorry if this was really bad but it was my first time and now I will upload some songs. Neurosis - Raze the Stray
Begining with an operatic female voice, and synth, and some (being a little bit) of piano. I dont like it so far. The voice doesnt match the piano and synth very well. At about 1:01, guitars, bass and drums come in, with a guy screaming in the background. Plays the same not so great riff a few times, then stops. Slow struming on a clean electric, with bells and a violin with it. Then drums come in, and the synth does the cheesy major-minor key switch on the drum hits. Actual vocals come in now, and i like the vocals, but the rest of the song isnt doing it for me. At somewhere near 3:30, it starts into solid music, as in actual guitar riffs, and drums that stay solid. I like this section, its got something to it that the rest of the song doesnt have. very smooth too. But, sadly enough, this only lasts about 30 seconds. Then comes back again at 5:05 or so. From there, it sounds as if it will end the song like this, but we still have a good 2 minuets to go. Which scares me, cuz i dont want to suffer through the rest of this. The smoother part ends again, now its a slower guitar riff, drums, and an obnoxious sound coming from the "left" guitar. kinda sounds like if you pluck a piano string. Its almost like the song cannot decide what it wants to do At 700, a total new part of the song starts. Its a little bit more like the smoother part, just this time its got an eire "groove" if you will. The bass is much more predominant. Guitars are doing a 7 chord up up down down down down down kinda progression, its overused a lil but the bass makes it really cool. That section ends at 8:15 or so, and the song ends at 842. 6/10, and thats being generous. i can see why he put the genre as (???) Demon Hunter - I Have Seen Where It Grows
I've heard about these guys, but never actually gave them a listen. The intro is pretty cool... kind of sounds like it skips at one part, which adds a pretty cool effect. In comes the rest of the band (except the vocalist) and the same riff is played. Sounds pretty good, but nothing to write home about. In come the vocals and the song slows down a little. The vocals are understandable, which is a plus. After the verse comes the chorus. The introduction to the chorus is neat. The cleaner vocals in the chorus sound pretty good, a nice switch from the screaming. Next comes that intro riff again, and then the verse. At this point I'm thinking the song structure is pretty simple (intro, verse, chorus, verse, chorus). This isn't a good thing, but it doesn't bring the song down a lot. The part a little after 2:00 is pretty cool, with the drums and guitar only. Then the vocals come in, talking. Then a little breakdown comes, and the song suddenly fades out. 7/10 - Not a bad song, but nothing too great. I'm glad they didn't make it much longer though, because the song structure was quite simple. --- Asterius - On Black Tusk (self proclaimed "cosmometal") http://s48.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=0ARDA1JKGCVOJ2POI25PGVMI15 Andromeda - The Words Unspoken (prog metal - great new guitarist in the world of metal) http://s48.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=0FEJ9PGAJNS6Y07NY99J702C1W If you choose the first due to the genre, still give the second a listen. |

Asterius - On Black Tusk
The name was more interesting and I generally dislike wanky prog metal which is what Andromeda sounded like to me. Maybe not though. Begins with a riff with long rests and an annoying synth sound. Whispers. Atmospheric yet very heavy. THen the song breaks loose. I like it. The riffs get a little boring and the techno sounding noises are annoyin because this is good metal in itself. THe singer's voice is decent but I prefer either a straight growl or straight singing, layered or not. THis is that annoying gring or sgowl half way in between. THe rifs are chuggy and get a little old, but it is all very tight. I like the transitions between almost black metal riffing and the stop start chord chugs. It is a cool contrast. I also really like the background singing. It fits well and is where it belongs, in the background. It is sung and pretty well done. The drummer has a few cool fills sprinkled around. I love the outro. That annoying synth ends the song. Decent but nothing that really amazed me. Self proclaiming your own band as a new genre is lame. Really, really lame. 7/10 My recommendations are all symphonic and/or folk metal, mostly stemming from death metal. A cool turn from the traditional black metal influences on symphonic and/or folk metal. Most are around 5-6 minutes long. That Andromeda song isn't really wanky prog. They do have a few parts in other songs that I could see as being "wanky" though.

Because this has been bumped and no-one has dibs on anything annnd i have **** internet so downloading those sofngs is not an option i want to recomend a few songs.
http://www.avengedsevenfold.com/cityofevil/- I dont have any P2P programs so this was the best i cant do. You can listen to all the new songs. Im sure everyone has heard these guys, but the new material is a hell of alot different to their other stuff so i think alot of these people that have written them off should have a listen to the new stuff. Recommended songs- Sidewinder (end of the song is really cool), The wicked End and Strength of the world. And because they dont get talked about enough i also rec. any songs off Angeldust by Faith No More. Sorry no link, but any P2P will have them. |
The Angeldust Recommendation is a good call, but you have to use the songs recommended by the last reviewer. The thread usually dies for days at a time, so don't worry about it :)
