Yea well the story behind my comment was I played my new Bob Dylan cd (The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan) for my friends, and when they heard Blowing in the Wind and they said who is singing this crap. All I could think was how could anybody even think this is crap, this is the best anti war song I've ever heard.

I love that album.

It is quite funny how in some songs Bob Dylan sounds like a really old man, despite being in his early twenties. He just has that voice.

I really like Dont Think Twice, It's Alright.

Illmatic 03-02-2005 11:00 PM

He sounds really old on Time out of Mind and Love and Theft. It always evokes the image of a dying Johnny Cash, for some reason.

If its from the 60s and 70s, and it ain't good, we don't call it classic, we call it old fermaldehyde.

clown_phobia 03-03-2005 01:27 AM

Can you guys please list me the reasons why classic rock is better than new rock?

I need to convince my friends and i'm having trouble explaining it...
Thanks :thumb:

ArcLite 03-03-2005 01:41 AM

Well here's one. Talent was involved back in the day...Of course there are exceptions but on the whole this is true.

Ulysses 03-03-2005 05:06 AM

It's more creative and original, take prog rock for example..bands such as Yes, an original sound you seldom find anywhere else. Contemporary bands are just trying to re-create what has already been done, just with less musical virtuosity.

That's a good album. My second favorite Byrds album.

And Kiss are a Classic Rock band. I don't care if you don't like them, most do and they have what they need to be a Classic Rock band.
Grateful Dead - Terrapin Station
Grateful Dead - Samson & Delilah

"Samson & Delilah" is a first testament story. It is a traditional song, but I really like the Dead's version. Rev. Gary Davis also does a fine job at it.

"Terrapin Station" deals with Christian mythology, but also various ancient beliefs. It is based upon the belief that the world sits ontop of a terrapin's (turtle) back. On the top is Heaven, the middle is Earth, and the bottom is Hell.

That is if you are looking for anything other than the Greek, Roman, and Egyptian mythology.
Alright thanks. :thumb:

And I'm almost positive its a sitar on the intro to Paint It Black, which is why the intro rules so much.

Why wouldn't they be glam rock?

I always thought it was Brian playing on that Vox Phantom...

@zepfan2k3: A band can fall in more than one genre.

Permanent Solution 03-03-2005 12:28 PM

I think glam rock is way more fitting to their sound though...

Encantadas was the basis for Moby in Moby Dick, instead Encantadas deals with a tortoise, the shell is black- evil; the belly is white- good; and the fact that the tortoise's shell can only be seen as one color at a time.

Good ****. "Visions of Johanna" is good **** too.

I think I'm going to agree with you. I believe it's got fifteen verses packed into a six minute song. I actually used those lyrics for an English project on Monday where we broke down lyrics and went into detail about them and different writing techniques etc.

I want nothing more in life than to be able to write songs like Bob Dylan.

Badmoon 03-03-2005 03:53 PM
Why wouldn't they be glam rock?
Well, David Bowie, Queen, T Rex, Brian Eno, Roxy Music, and various others can be considered Glam Rock. Dare you say they are not Classic Rock?
I think glam rock is way more fitting to their sound though...
But Glam Rock really doesn't have a definitive sound. It is based upon appearance, and possibly attitude.

Pfft, Queen is sooo glam rock...
/lie

I think Kiss was still more about the glam than any of those bands listed. Granted I only know of half the ones you listed, but, I wouldn't class Kiss the same as the ones I do.

TO your ninja edit:
I know, sound is a bad word to have used, my bad. I meant...attitude I guess.

More Glam than T Rex? Marc Bolan is the king of Glam.

Illmatic 03-03-2005 04:00 PM

KISS was probably the first hair metal band. Hair metal took the music of a watered-down Led Zeppelin and added the "glam" image.

thickasabrick 03-03-2005 04:01 PM

T Rex defines Glam Rock. In my opinion.

I wouldn't really say KISS was entirely glam rock, but I understand why they would be considered glam rock.
