No one around here even knows of Bill Dickens. I'm not too worried about the comparison. If people can't see my bass, they'll never be able to tell what I'm playing, anyway.

But, yeah. The more I think about it, the more enticing the idea becomes.
If you don't know a lot of bassists you will probably get a lot more "why is your guitar so big" comments then "why are you a dickens wannabe" comments.

Pluperfect_Arson 10-22-2006 08:41 PM
not much bigger, and i doubt the 7 string thing, they are only 3 and half inches long at the 24th fret (from conklin) and the 5 string neck is usually just as big as the 6 (on most models)
Eh...yeah. I wasn't entirely sure seeing as I have never actually played a seven string, but a keyboard would be within reasonable limits to see if you would be able to handle it, or so I think from the looks of the necks. 3.5", though, isn't too bad.

Also, I finished the Bill Dickens film--by finish, I mean "skipped through his playing"--and that guy makes me want to shoot myself.

Haha, bingo.

That's almost entirely what I'll get.

Except from my one elitist-traditionalist guitiar-playing friend, who'll just take a day out of his life to totally berate me for playing such a worthless instrument and tell me that I'll never find any use for it in a band.

PaulSimonon 10-22-2006 08:44 PM

That's when you use the runway to land a jet so you can't hear him.

i mean if they add two more strings, and use the string spacing of an old school trb we are only talking another 3/4 of an inch. and when you are up that high on the neck why would you want to play your low F# string. on my 6'es i cant reach the B string when im in the last few frets area, but i never need to

I see what you are saying, and I am not disagreeing with you in the slightest. I just read that a seven string was about the same width as a keyboard, so I figured that would be a good estimate for him to see if he would be able to handle a nine string. :p

I can reach the B on my six string, though. Meh.

BenJammin 10-22-2006 08:54 PM

So that decides it. I'm definitely going for a 9 string.

F#-B-E-A-D-G-C-F-Bb

Everything is picked out now except for the body shape. Any suggestions?

Err...nothing too ugly. :p

Singlecut!

Singlecut!
Well, I don't want an ugly bass.

Singlecuts are nice, but I couldn't come up with my own design. I wouldn't know how to shape it.

I suppose I've got, like, 5 months to think about this.

Yeah, you have some time to mess around then with what you want overall. I would go with a singlecut, but that is just personal prefence because I think they are incredibly sexy with six or more strings. A singlecut that only accomodates four or five strings just looks weird to me.

There was one singlecut five string that I liked, though. Boy, was it sexy. mmmmmm.

Spaceman Spiff 10-22-2006 09:09 PM

Eww.... don't get a singlecut! They're so ugly.

Pluperfect_Arson 10-22-2006 09:11 PM
Eww.... don't get a singlecut! They're so ugly.
The singlecut said the same thing about you!

Spaceman Spiff 10-22-2006 09:13 PM

If you go singlecut, you might as well complete the ultimate ugly and throw some buckeye on it.

BenJammin 10-22-2006 09:15 PM

Never! Goddamn. I'd rather take a bullet between the eyes than own a bass with anything buckeyed on it.

Pluperfect_Arson 10-22-2006 09:15 PM

You have gone too far, mister. :(

Except buckeye is nasty.

Thonk 10-22-2006 09:20 PM

Redwood burl top.

mmmm

BenJammin 10-22-2006 09:22 PM

How about some quilted cocobolo?

Pluperfect_Arson 10-22-2006 09:24 PM

Cocobolo looks sexy when it isn't quilted.

Honestly, though, for those who oppose singlecuts, go look at a Nordstrand Spruce Goose. It is so incredibly nice looking. mmm. I don't like most singlecuts.

The Spruce Goose is amazing! But Carey and his boys do an amazing bass in general.

Left Shoe 10-22-2006 09:25 PM

get an ebony body, that would sound craaaazy

I toyed with the idea of getting a macassar ebony top, but I don't really want a dark-bodied top.

Right now the goal is to get some really nice flamed maple.

I saw pictures in the review that Bass Guitar did for it, and I was like "dayuuuuuum."

Thonk 10-22-2006 09:28 PM

Regular cocobolo looks a lot better, imo.

Pinhead13 10-22-2006 09:34 PM

By the way, thanks a lot for the strings, Ploop. It's much appreciated. :thumb:

Oh yeah, I don't know your real name, and I like to spell your name as Ploop.

Left Shoe 10-22-2006 09:55 PM

BenJammin 10-22-2006 09:58 PM

I'm so close to finishing this essay on Wordsworth that I can almost taste it.

No problem. :p

My mum's bringing home one of those bigger envelopes since she has a ton at work, and I should be shipping by either tomorrow morning or Tuesday morning depending on if I have stamps.

My name's Nikolaus, though, in case you were wondering.
hey didn;t yo try a cigarette? horrible eh?
Yes. No.

It was okay; it's not like it made me sick or anything like they always show with little kids taking their first puff... I guess because I'm already used to inhaling clouds of death into my lungs, something I've been doing for years.

Honestly, I liked the feeling that it gave me. I kind of wanted another one right after for two reason:
1. It was very new. I liked what it did, I wanted more.
2. It wasn't enough. I was hoping for something more out of it, it left me liking what it gave, but unsatisfied because it wasn't enough.

I never wanted a cigarette more than the next night right after I smoked a joint.

I just finished a cig... Lurvely little things.

Spaceman Spiff 10-22-2006 10:18 PM

I'm not going to lie, I won't be surprised if I smoke more. And I mean on rare occasions, but having one once a month or something seems alright to me. I did like the feeling, but as I said, it wasn't strong enough, not what I was expecting, and that kind of upset me about the whole thing.

PaulSimonon 10-22-2006 10:20 PM

Yeah, they're more of a social thing than a recreational thing. It's just something to do to pass the time usually.
