i'd say a large splash (12" or so) or a small crash (13",14")
actually. now thinking about it. try a 13" AA El Sabor Salsa Splash....an oversized splash/undersized crash |
I'm looking for a another crash to go along with my 16" Sabian B8pro Medium Crash, I don't know much about cymbals but I want it to be a different tone but not too different that it would sound out of place. mainly for rock but also versatile in other areas of music i.e. It won't sound mega bad with jazz but killer with rock etc.

HHX Stage Crash. pure awesomeness
|
i'm looking for a smaller crash, preferbly thin to compliment my setup
currently, i own: 16" Meinl Customshop Fusion Crash 16" HH Medium Thin Crash 10" HHX Splash 14" HH Medium Hats 20" HH Medium Ride 5 piece rockstar as u can see, my cymbals are basically quite dark sounding looking @ 14" cymbals, brighter sounding, good fast feel my choices are: 14" AAX studio crash 14" A custom crash 14" A custom fast crash anyone any opinions on which one would be better and versatile i play mainly rock and gospel any other recommendations are welcomed :) |
out of those 3 choices they are all great. i would go with the A custom crash or the studio.
|
i'd go studio....although to perfectly complement, while still boasting brighter voice, try a 14" HHX Studio Crash
|
Well Eric I'm *finally* buying my new ride today, and I need some recommendations on rides to try out. Ones I have my eye on already to scope out are 22" A Ping ride, 22" K Heavy ride, 21" A Rock ride, and 21" Signature Dry Heavy ride. I'm looking for a ride that will really cut, and be very audible, even in loud music, not just form a base for other instruments. I'd prefer if it was bright, but we'll see how much I like that K...it needs to be relatively dry, I don't want that much wash, and not a ton of sustain once I've stopped playing it (though obviously a ride that's either medium heavy or heavy weight and 21 or 22 inches is going to have a decent amount of sustain for sure). Any recommendations?
|
I don't have any cymbals yet, except Pacific DW stock hi hats & I need a ride cymbal.
I play mostly classic punk but I don't know what kind of sound I want. Just the most versatile/inexpensive thing I guess that's still decent. |
20" Zildjian K Ride. Aside from riding on the 18" Constantinople crash it'll be the best ride sound you'll get from any cymbal, nylon OR wood tips. I've got one, it's ma baby. (Still waiting for the money for that Constantinople crash though)
Something tells me that even if that's an articulate ride it's not going to have the cut to justify it's expensive price tag.

AA Tight ride, Heavy Ride, Dry Ride ....maybe the ever awesome Sig Dry Heavy or Dry Crisp |
Yeah I'm really looking forward to trying the Signature Dry Heavy, 21". Should be fantastic...we'll see if it's good enough to justify the price tag.
|
what about the Sig Power ride? or a 2002 Heavy ride
|

let me know hoe it turns out....wont be on MSN though....at work
|
Well it's official. I've ordered 1400 dollars worth of cymbals, and have 500 dollars worth of cymbals on layaway. lmfao. I've decided Paiste Signatures are up my alley...I've ordered 4 rides to try, 2 Zildjians, 2 Paistes, and I have an 18" Signature Full crash and an 18" A Medium Thin crash on hold.
|
VERRRRY nice.
 |
Yep, I've decided against going with traditional finish as well, asince the Signatures are a nice briliant type finish, though they aren't Signature Reflectors, those are just crazy.
Layaway: 18" A Medium Thin brilliant (sounded better than the others. 2 brilliants and a trad, this one was best). 18" Signature Full crash. Order: 21" Signature Dry Heavy ride, 22" Signature Dry ride, 22" K Heavy ride, 22" A Ping ride. |
ok, I've had the same cymbals for several years now, I think its time to get some new ones. currently I have a Sabian B8 18" ride and Sabian B8 14" hi-hats. I'll be playing mostly rock/hard rock, punk, hardcore/emo, ska, and jazz. could people recomend some cymbals for me? I'm really only looking for new hats (if needed), a new ride (again, if needed), and a crash cymbal (which I dont' have). I'd like a darker sound, I'm not fond of very bright cymbals.also, I'll be playing with wood tips if that makes a difference.
EDIT: I've been listening to a fair amount of soundclips of cymbals and I've found I'm fonder [sp?] of the crash cymbals with more attack and definition. as for rides I'd like something thats on the washy side, but can still get moderate stick definition. as for hi-hats, I'd like something that has very clear stick definition but can also be washy aswell. |
eeny meeny miney mo
i am planning on buying a set of zildjian z custom cymbals ( 14'' mastersound hats, 16'' rock crash, 10'' splash) and am undecided on a ride. i would prefer it were within the z family so it would blend better. i play mainly heavy metal stuff but sometimes lighter metal. i dont play jazz or pop or anything like that. i really want a ride that cuts through without a lot of wash and has a nice bell ( im a bell fanatic). some rides i love are the ones that strapping young lads drummer uses and the one arch enemy's drummer uses. any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Dude, do yourself a favor. Get 14" A Rock hats, a 21" A Rock ride, an 18" A Medium crash, and a 12" A splash...Z Customs sound like crapola and your A's will be usable in a ton of other scenarios.
|
Bright, fast crash that will still project over the rest of the music.. Shimmery, bright, but something that will crash high and then die out fairly quickly.
I really like the A Custom Fast Crash, but, I'm not so sure it will be loud enough? |
It's a great cymbal, believe me. Played a 17" for 2 years. Amazing crash cymbal.

Listen to the man! |
If he wanted to be even more versatile, I would recommend New Beats...A Rock's are good, he said he plays basically strictly heavy metal, but still...New Beats are solid in any situation.

EDIT: sorry, the ride I have is actually a sabian B8 crash/ride. I hate the thing with a passion. my high hat is alright, but I'd like something better suited for my needs |

also, im looking to buy a new ride right now and a china. i was looking at the Sabian AA Medium Ride, and the Sabian ProSonix 18'' chinesse. you guys have any recomendations or reviews on these cymbals? also, right now i have a kit that is part Zildjian, part Paiste and this would make it part Sabian, is there any drawbacks to mixing brands?
