Ordinary Boys - Talk, Talk, Talk
I think I've heard this band ebfore but don't remember. Starts off with palm muted chords. Ihope this doesn't suck. The singer enteers. I like the melody and his voice is pretty good. I like this. I like the lyrics too. The chorus... I remember this I think. I like it a lot. Yeah, this is definitely pretty good stuff. A little guitar solo. It's nothing special but it's catchy and fits well. I really like the overall feel of the song. Kinda happy or at least positive but it seems like the lyrics add a twist of irony. The drummer does a lot of fills. Same with the bassist. Bother pretty good. Not great, but that wouldn't fit in this band I feel. There is a lot of cool musical stuff going on as well but mixed with really predictable rock. I like it. There's also a hammond organ in the outro. Dead Soul Tribe - Black Smoke and Mirrors
I've never heard of these people so I have no idea as to what to expect. It does sound interesting, though. The song starts off with some nice accoustic work and a very nice flute solo. Soon after the flute drops out, to be replaced by male vocals. The guy has a nice voice, good clean vocals. There may well be some piano in the background now. At around 35 secs a distorted guitar enters to emphasise the chord changes of the accoustic. This adds a harder edge to the song. 35 seconds and already we've been introdcuded to a number of musical ideas :) The distorted guitar drops back out, and the flute re-enters briefley for another solo which is, again, very nice. The flute adds a cletic touch. We also have some added cymbal work. The distorted guitar replaces the flute again and the drums take on a fuller role. This lasts for a very short period which brings us to a rit and introduces a new section of the song. This new sectin is slower, and the guitar here sounds as though it is trying very hard to be a cello. It manage rather well, actually. This section builds up to an epic dramatisation of the new section. The flute enters as a solo instrument again and plays some really, really cool staccato stuff over some interesting chord changes (the changes sound very jazzy). I can easily see where their progressive label comes from. This section breaks done into something similar to the beginning of the song, though the flute accompanies for much longer. The Guitar-wannabe-cello is also present. The song then builds as the distorted guitar takes precedent over the accoustic and its coupling with the drums drives the song forward. The flute is solo again, and is doing similar, really cool, staccato stuff. This section breaks down to a more mellow section, much like the beginning again. This track was really good. The flute especially. The whole thing was brilliantly written and was performed really well. 9/10 Grand Magus - Kingslayer (metal) Daft Punk - There's Something About Us (Electronica) Christina Aguilera - Underappreciated (soul pop) Chicago - 25 or 6 to 4 (Classic Rock/soulish) Emperor - Depraved (Black Metal) Dave Navarro - Not For Nothing (Industrial rock/metal) Monkey Island - A Pirate I was meant to be (Humerous Sea Shanty) Pitchshifter - As Seen On T.V (humerous punk rock) Bloodhound Gang - I wish I was queer so I could get chicks La Lounge version (lounge Jazz) That should be enough for you crazy kids :) |

Daft Punk - There's Something About Us
I've heard of Daft Punk but never anything by them. Begins with a synthy piano playing slow chords in a cool progression. I like it. Then we get drums and bass and noises. It's very relaxing and cool. Makes me think of a sex scene in a movie but not in a **** sort of way. Well, sort of. I like the watery sound of the guitar. No vocals until nearly halfway. They are very wet but sound not too bad. I like the melody. It does some unpredictable things. I feel like dancing. I guess that means this is a good song for the genre. The guitar solo I like. THe tone makes it feel like jazz, and it is a bit jazzy. It seems like this band knows what's going on musically at least. It feels almost like a jam that could go on forever and people would keep dancing. Structurally, the song is pretty half assed sounding but I still liked the music side of it all. Very cool. 7.5/10 O.S.I. - When You're Ready Experimental prog metal/rock Katatonia - Inside the City of Glass Semi-progressive-rock/doom Elvenking - The Silk Dilemma Folk metal Goldfinger - Just Like Heaven (the Cure) Pop punk cover Nile - User-Maat-ReDeath Metal 8:51 Mastodon - Trilobite Semi-progressive metal Dead Soul Tribe - Black Smoke and Mirrors Progressive rock/metal with flute solos |

Nile - User-Maat-Re
I have heard Nile before, and own In Their Darkened Shrines. I know what to expect. Opens with an Egyptian sounding riff on what appears to sound like an acoustic/electric guitar. A few seconds later, a gong rings behind it. This riff fades off at about 19 seconds. A second later, all hell breaks loose as the full band comes in, double bass pedals and ultra-heavy downtuned riffs ablazin. A harmonic, and the song slows tempo a little (but still retains its ultra-heaviness). A palm muted riff is played over double pedaled drums, and is repeated with the second guitar playing the harmony. Vocals come in at about 0:50. They are the classic Nile vocals we all know and love (or hate) - low and brutal. The drums doubletime, and the guitars go crazy with held chords, palm muting, and harmonics galore. More Egyptian riffs come in around 1:45, with one guitar playing the main and the other the harmony. Song goes extra slow around 2:30, and becomes more heavy than it has been (if that is even possible). Speeds up around 2:55. More harmonized Egyptian riffs abound. Ok, now one guitar is playing a wailing Egyptian riff, and the drums have slowed a bit. The instruments hold their last notes at 3:50, and only a single guitar is left (once again with Egyptian riffs). All instruments except for vocals come back in at 4:05. Vocals do a low growl, and fade out. The double bass pedals go absolutely crazy at 4:45. Nile's drummer shows his chops throughout this part of the song. Vocals come back in at 5:10. They are a bit easier to understand at this point...you can pick out words and phrases. Song slows at 5:40. Guitars stroke single chords at 6:04, while the drummer does a bit of a solo behind them. The vocals are at their brutalist in this part of the song. More harmonized Egyptian riffs around 6:30. One guitarist begins bending notes on the upper frets of his guitar over uberfast drumming and more downtuned mayhem and ultra low vocals. Guitar begins shredding around 7:05, and begins bending notes again at 7:10. This "solo" goes on for a while. I really like this part of the song. The instruments begin to fade at around 8:05, and continue to do a slow fadeout until the end of the song. Another masterpiece from the masters of ultrabrutal Egyptian death metal. A high recommendation for any death head, and fans of very technical drumming. 9/10 . I'm rather optimistic about liking this track, but I'm less so about being able to write a decent review for it.
John Hart Trio - Clone Me - 4:59 Starts with some very nice, wah-influenced guitar, and then what I think of as typical jazz percussion comes in, along with the bass, though the bass seems unusually unnoticeable. Pretty good start. So far, this is all about the guitar. The drum keeps adding little flourishes and fills, but (maybe it's just me) the focus is all on the guitar, as it's playing all kinds of (for lack of a better phrase) cool stuff. Hmm. Two minutes in already; if this is essentially what the whole song is, you're really not going to get a very good review :-/ Around 2:40 the guitar starts playing something that is more what a rock/metal fan would recognise as a solo, if you see what I mean. Bit of distortion, fairly energetic; not the meandering noodling of the rest of the song. Meandering noodling in a good way, that is. The end is pretty cool. The drummer picks up the pace slightly with his (now almost constant) rolling, and the guitarist seems to go a bit crazy, as he just stops following whatever plot he was before, instead running all over, around and through it. Good, though. 8.5/10, I think. And apologies for the review, but instrumental jazz is possibly worse even that hip hop to review for Forced Listening. Gang of Four - I Found That Essence Rare
Never heard anything by this band before. Begins with a tinny guitar riff that is pretty cool and reminds me of a clock ring. THen drums and chords. This is alright but I'm not sure how I'll feel about this by the end. THe tone is weird but I like it. Whatr makes this post punk and not just punk? I guess I need to listen to more punk so I can understand these subtle differences. I was hoping for something more like Refused or At The Drive-In. This whole opening bit is really repetitive and just keeps going and the chorus is hardly a shift out of it. THere is some cool bass and drum stuff in a little interlude but then back to the repetition. This is really boring and basically sucks IMO. 3/10 for boredom. Mastodon - Trilobite
This Mastodon track is taken from the album Remission, and runs at about 6:30. The song gives a very eerie vibe. Coming from these "Leviathans", it gives an oceanic atmosphere, which is common in this band. The song starts off with some clean and delayed guitar lines. Some other 'noises' give it a better atmosphere. Then the drums softly kick in, and then the heaviness assumes. The songs goes from those two sounds. The vocal lines sound reminiscent of how they always do with Mastodon. As stated above, it goes from that delayed clean guitar, to the heavy part, and drifting back and forth. At some parts, about right after the distortion fades, it seems like there is a speed increase, or some type of time measure change. The songs also features a T.V. monologue type clip in it, that works good, not great, for the song. Overall, the song was good. Nothing really special though, compared to Mastodon's other works. It seems to just slowly drift abck and forth, and feels like it drags on for too long. After more listens, it does grow on you though. I'll give the song a 2/5. It wasn't bad, just nothing really great about it that stands out. They combine Death/Melodic Death/Rock, and make it somewhat technical and progressive. They are no longer a band, but have evolved to a much more popular band. I won't say who yet, because I'll have you guess for a while. The second and fifth songs are instrumentals. Any of the "Insane" solos you hear, were done by James Murphy(Death, Testament, Cancer, Obituary). He was not part of the band though. |

Good review, though. :)
I'm not sure. I had to turn up my speakers a bit to try and make it out, so maybe my subconscious just kind of filled in the blanks for me. I didn't make mention of it elsewhere in the song though, just in case. Incidentally, I've been listening to that Butch Walker song I reviewed a while back quite a bit recently. His semi-rapped verse vocals remind me of Freddie Mercury. No dibs for now. EDIT: Dibs. |
I've heard of these guys before, but I have no idea where or why.
Foreign Objects - Test It Out - 3:39 Starts off with the style of guitar I always associate with bands like Canvas Solaris. I like Canvas Solaris, so maybe this will work out well. The drums are playing light and fast in the background, mostly a lot of cymbal work. After this intro, they start playing a pretty cool rock riff, kind of rolling, a riff with a good-time feel to it. The vocals start over repetitions of this riff; they're harsh, as opposed to sung, but they're not incredibly so. Snarling, I suppose, would be a good word for them. Vocals stop, and there's a quick break for the intro guitar again, before we go back to that cool riff and the vocals. I don't think I'm too keen on the chorus, since it's not especially likely to stick in my mind, and it doesn't really stick out from the song around it. Not song-destroyingly-awful, though, so I don't mind too much. Solo starts around 2:30 (I think), and it starts off very high-pitched. Almost sounds digital at first. It's a decent solo, definitely skilful, but it's not amazing. I'm not enjoying it as much as I could/would probably like to. And the song just kind of goes back to that nice riff, to repeat what was played for the majority of the rest of the song until the end. 7/10, I think. Plus a couple of points for that nice riff, minus a couple of points for getting a bit repetitive towards the end (which I suppose is something of an achievement, in a three minute song).
