I haven't listened yet but this was on sputnik news so I thought I'd post it if any of you guys don't look at that.

YDLoad what are some fun, challenging songs to play on bass?

I've been playing a lot recently, I've learned a ****load of Joy Division songs, a few Minutemen, a few Fugazi, a few Gang of Four, and "Hey" by Pixies. I had a look at the ultimate-guitar bass forum where there's recommendations for beginners/intermediate/expert, but they are mostly all crap songs I don't want to listen to. Just give me a list of songs or sumthin, I can find the tabs.

YourBiggestFan 07-02-2008 09:18 AM

Diablo III will kick some serious ***. The zombie wall looked so cool.

Jacaranda 07-02-2008 12:24 PM

moby octopad by yo la tengo and the new by interpol are probably my two favorite bass lines to play and they are both really ****ing easy

kind of typical but the song layers nicely

YourBiggestFan 07-02-2008 04:57 PM

'If you Want me to Stay' by Sly and the Family Stone is a great bass line, if you're into funk and whatnot.

It sounds like you've already got a great repertoire there. I know you know these bands, so this should be easy:

Embrace yes yes yes for the love of God learn some Embrace. The Mackaye one, not the British one.

Television so so good.

Husker Du, Greg Norton is a beast.

Unwound, some great basslines that dont follow the guitar.
Wipers, some great basslines that DO follow the guitar but with lots of fills.
Morphine, even if you dont got a 2-string slide you can still play the songs on a normal bass.

...those are all bands where tabs might be harder to find, so i (try) to learn them by ear. however, i learned these ones from tabs and so can you:

Cursive - The Recluse
Nomeansno - Rags and Bones
Pixies - Here Comes Your Man
ATDI - Quarantined, Invalid Litter Dept.
The Jesus Lizard - Monkey Trick

honestly if you've already got Minutemen and Fugazi thats like 90% of all the great basslines ever written (by white people anyway)
Husker Du, Greg Norton is a beast.
as much as i love husker du the bass isn't impressive at all, he has some sweet moments here and there but other then that meh.

iron maiden is fun to play but makes me tired

YDload 07-02-2008 10:02 PM

okay so greg norton isnt steve harris, so what? the point is that the basslines are fun to play and thats what was requested. specifically Terms of Psychic Warfare, Girl on Heaven Hill, and a lot of other Grant songs for some reason.

niobium 07-03-2008 12:11 PM

arpeggiator*

whoops

and agreed about unwound and fugazi

Is that when it's "scheduled" to come out? I don't expect a prompt delivery from Blizzard, just a prolonged teasing campaign.
Diablo III will kick some serious ***. The zombie wall looked so cool.
for real, that was the craziest. I'm glad they're keeping a lot of the character classes a secret.

Saw Pablo Francisco the other day. Was very good, some great material I hadn't heard before.

Not really; also, you may be the only person in the world who cares about the verse bass parts in Here Comes Your Man.

YDload 07-03-2008 06:09 PM

niobium 07-03-2008 08:15 PM

the first tomahawk album is decent for bass lines

i only thought of it because malocchio came on random

perriwinkle 07-03-2008 11:27 PM

i was building a teepee with my friends the other day, brought a boombox and my ipod (and a chipotle burrito) and we listened to the Tomahawk album from like last year or whatever for a while and that was fun. that song Red Dance or Red Wolf or something is really good
