Ah blues and Jazz. In that case, regardless of his abilty, I'm not able to appreciate it, I have no idea what's good or bad in those areas of music, and again I generally dislike that music.

I mean one of my friends that listens to Jazz was boasting about playing quavers at 120, I was like, "Huh...I can play semiquavers at 190..."

So I'm guessing it's a completely different understanding of what's "good".

AA-12 06-07-2006 09:57 AM

Dude, Spastic Ink kicks ungodly amounts of ***.

Jazz = way harder than anything we play.

kurrpt 06-07-2006 10:00 AM

nah man, its his friggin phrasing..

im no jazz head, and it was EASY to tell the dude was very versed in terms of musical theory and composition

Yeah they do!

Jazz probably is, I can agree but I still hate it. I seem to only be able to stand diatonic music.

Ah phrasing, that's something everyone wants to be good at. Especially me, I can't improvise to save my life.

I just watched that video of Eric Johnson, and I'm actually fukking impressed for the first time in a long time. I've always turned my nose up at him just because of that things I've heard about him, having a strat, playing clean, playing blues etc etc, I thought I was going to hate it, and see him as bad (stupid I know). But I actually took the time to watch it and he's really good. When I saw him do those fast alternate picked runs I was like, WTF he didn't just do that...

Of course I've seen faster but it was definately unexpected, he's a great player.

Apocalyptic Raids 06-07-2006 10:09 AM

as far as guitarists go:

Friedman + Murphy = gods

AA-12 06-07-2006 10:12 AM

You speak the truth, mainly with Murphy.

kurrpt 06-07-2006 10:14 AM

thats the thing ive always tried to do since the beginning. I always try to find the strong points in anyone's guitar game, and try to understand how they are doing that, or why it sounds the way it does.

I think it allows me to appreciate most.

As far as jazz goes, my chordal knowledge is by no means desireable. Sure i know basic chord theory, but i rarely practice different chord voicings. I can tell its a topic ill have to cover with great detail in the future, and i welcome it

Apocalyptic Raids 06-07-2006 10:14 AM

I still need to get some of his solo stuff.

his work on Cause Of Death is just godly though

MRDuCran 06-07-2006 10:14 AM

Eddie Murphy?

lawl

AA-12 06-07-2006 10:15 AM

Ahaha, James Murphy.

Jono, i'll see if I can find my folder with one of his solo albums and upload it.

Apocalyptic Raids 06-07-2006 10:18 AM

awesome

saraswati?

AA-12 06-07-2006 10:26 AM

Sure. If I have it it'll be up by tonight.

Apocalyptic Raids 06-07-2006 10:27 AM

cool

I really need to go to bed. I was going to an hour ago and I have classes tomorrow :(

AA-12 06-07-2006 10:28 AM

Haha, 'night man.

Apocalyptic Raids 06-07-2006 10:30 AM

i always do this.

people always come one and start posting in my favourite threads when im about to go to bed.

either that or i start listening to an album or something

:(

AA-12 06-07-2006 10:36 AM

Haha, my sleeping is always messed up too.

MRDuCran 06-07-2006 10:37 AM

I get up on a Saturday at about 3-4pm, and stay up until Sunday, usually fall asleep about 4-9pm.

Lil’ Bloodred Ridin’ Hood 06-07-2006 11:20 AM

Thats cuz your crazy :-P

kurrpt 06-07-2006 11:22 AM

i stay up till 1, at least, every night to squeeze in 3 extra hours. Some would consider that a little odd, considering i have to wake up early every day for work

AA-12 06-07-2006 11:25 AM

Lately i've just been sleeping at random times and in random rooms. I barely play guitar now too :-(

kurrpt 06-07-2006 11:28 AM

thats weird...

i really play more than I ever have. More importantly, i get more out of my time spent playing than i've ever had, which drives me to play more, and more

AA-12 06-07-2006 11:29 AM

My main thing is that I never practice, I just jam in the time that I play.

kurrpt 06-07-2006 11:43 AM

wanking

i see it as a waste of time. Most people who wank start to really lose their hold on perfection and technique. I saw me reverting back to old, bad habbits and I saw it as counter productive. If i jam, its really to expand my auditory knowledge of a scale, or to work on my ear in general

Shadows Within 06-07-2006 11:58 AM

I wasn't getting any better at guitar so i havn't been practicing at all lately...i really sohuld but there doesen't seem to be any congs i can learn the only COB one i've managed to play was ETID but i've tried learning the others and i can't do it, i can't shred either, let alone play fast. i tried learning the beggining to downfall but i gave up on it because it was to fast even when i slowed it down i still couln't get it.

AA-12 06-07-2006 12:03 PM

Nah, I just enjoy it a lot which is all that matters to me.

kurrpt 06-07-2006 12:05 PM

thats cool i guess. I just see it as me deterring from my goals and it not helping me achieve them

MRDuCran 06-07-2006 12:12 PM

Yeah same here. I do think it's important to take the time at the end of practise to have a jam and maybe play through some things you practised that day in a more musical way, but I do also prefer spending the time practising. Sucks that I haven't been playing much lately either, spend too much time on the computer downloading videos.
Thats cuz your crazy :-P
Unoit.

Btw, if you stop putting "-" and a capital P everytime you do that, it'll come out like this:

:p

kurrpt 06-07-2006 12:14 PM

i really use my amp (Krank) as a reward for my hard work. If i've worked on a section to get it perfect, and im happy with my results, then ill jam it up.

Most people just wank though. Theres really no thought process involved for most, so it kinda deters me from that route

MRDuCran 06-07-2006 12:20 PM

I do that somedays, just pick up the guitar and pose in the mirror. It helps train me for when you play on stage but I ALWAYS get distracted, and end up realising 5 mins later that I stopped playing the lick I was supposed to ages ago.

It's usually because other songs I know remind of me what I'm currently playing so I think, ooo lets play that, without actually thinking, no that is bad, I should be concentrating. Ah well, when I finish college in a few weeks, I'll hopefully get my head down and practise like a bitch.

kurrpt 06-07-2006 12:21 PM

nice. Good luck to that...

I basically shut my eyes, open my ears, and focus my arse off. I find things like tension creep up, so it really keeps me on my toes
