Nope, what's it like? I need a good book to read.
Here's an excerpt from the back of the book/new york times review: Probably Garcia Marquez's finest and most famous work, OHYoS tells the story of the rise and fall, birth and dealth, of the mythical town of Macodno through the history of the Buendia family. Inventive, amusing, magnetic, sad, alive with unforgettable men andwomen, and with a truth and understand that strike the soul, OHYoS is a masterpiece of the art of fiction. New York Times review: "OHYoS is the first piece of literature since the Book of Genesis that should be required reading for the entire human race.... reporting on everything that happened(in the town) with more lcidity, wit, wisdom, and poetry than is expected from 100 years of novelists, let alone one man... Mr. Garcia has done nothing less than to create in the reader a sense of all that is projound, meaningful and meaningless in life." It's not a easy read, but it was definitly worth the time. |
I answered first, why'd you quote him :(
Well obviously that means Me>you>non HHG people :p |
There's not enough spam here...
What are they like?
Fantasy/Philosophy rivaling LotR in writing ability, but much longer of a series, meaning more fun :D |
If you like comedic books, The Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy. If nothing else, you'll get a lot more of the banter between myself, magik, zepfan and others.
R.A. Salvatore's novels for Forgotten Realms (the Drizzt Do'Urden books) are beyond excellent, as well.
I may get Hitchikers Guide... out of my college library, 'cause a friend recommended it aswell. What are the R.A. Salvatore novels like? *Loads of info flying at me* |
What are the R.A. Salvatore novels like? *Loads of info flying at me*
Fantasy books, so I suppose you won't like them if you don't like fantasy (dwarfs, elves, etc). It's pretty much the best fantasy series I've read (no, I haven't yet read Eddings); if you just want a good story, then you can just take it as a good story. If you want something more as well, then there's lot of subtexts about alienation and racism you can read into it. |
Can you ban Meandevil Bar? He's spamming with Who killed kurt threads.
|
Now I'm in a pickle, I will probably get Terminal Spirit Disease, for the reasoning above.
Can borrow Slaughter of the... if I need to aswell.
By all means, just get both. Slaughter.. is worth owning anyway, and if TSD is better, as I've heard, then you can't really go wrong :) |

What are the R.A. Salvatore novels like? *Loads of info flying at me*
RA Salvatore's books are fantasy/adventure and very very good, I suggest you check out the Dark Elf Trilogy and then the Icewind Dale Trilogy, then the Lagacy Of The Drow. I forget what his new series is called, I have the first book in it, The Thousand Orcs... the Hunter's Blade rings a bell though. And if you like his books, I'd suggest checking out any Dragonlance books :thumb:. When Heavy Riva comes on, ask him too, he is big on fantasy books as well :) |
Yeah, it's the Hunter's Blade trilogy, I think. I haven't read that yet, though. I really need to start buying Salvatore's books (I just borrowed a friend's when I read them before). |

I'll ban him if he makes any more, but two isn't spam. At least, not since I think he made the second just to add a poll. |

hum, sounds interesting, I've never read a fantasy novel (asides LoTR, movie) but I would like to try all aspects of Literature.
By all means, just get both. I was apalled to find out recently that MX doesn't have a Literature Sub-Forum, blah, I don't know why I always thought there was one, and why I nbever bothered to check until now :upset:

Has anyone read The Lovely Bones?
I haven't, no. My mam bought it ages ago, and keeps saying I should read it. I keep putting it off though. Is it good? |

Probably because there isn't enough demand and/or traffic to merit one. NP: Cowby BeBop - Tank |

There've been a few book threads in the pit every now and then (noticeably joshmay's book club thread), but yeah, there's not much overall. We could just make this a makeshift literature forum, though. I think there's been some threads on them in the Video Games/Movies..a full sub-forum wouldn't get enough posts to warrant it's existence, though. |
I haven't, no. My mam bought it ages ago, and keeps saying I should read it. I keep putting it off though. Is it good?
Fantastic book. Then again I haven't been exposed to as much literature as others on here *although I am a Lit Student :|* It isn't a very long read, I pr0ned it in about a week, but that was non-stop reading. |
You could always try a thread like forced listening but Forced reading. Same Idea but with books.
I don't think it would survive at all though. |
..a full sub-forum wouldn't get enough posts to warrant it's existence, though.
What are the issues that are considered when creating a sub-forum? I can't see what the problem is with creating one even if the demand isn't that huge. Then again I don't run one of the biggest forums on the internet, so I don't know a lot about this. |
