There's a piece by one of the Impressionists for solo piano, Ravel if I remember correctly, where he sets out to emulate the effect of a gamelan orchestra on a piano. If you have a chance to listen to it do so, it's quite interesting.

Gamelan is great. They teach it as a subject at Harvard, lucky bastards. My ex there plays in it. Those Indonesians know good music.

Yeah they have a Javanese Gamelan style video on Youtube for 4 hand piano. It's pretty cool but I like Balinese Gamelan much better.
