Hells Bells 09-07-2005 12:47 PM

I haven't heard any of their new stuff, so I wouldn't be able to judge.
Agreed - he says nothing about the actual music at all - that wasn't a review, it was a rant of superficial spite.
And he spelt "melee" wrong
that would be me..I typed it out you know, not C+P'd it. :p

Could you post a link to the review?

Bugger! I thought we'd got him there

I'll post a link to the magazine in my hands eh? ;)
I'll post a link to the magazine in my hands eh? ;)
Oh sorry, I've heard of Metal Hammer, but I thought it was an e-zine. :p
I didn't think there'd be a review that awful in an actual magazine.

Stoic 09-07-2005 01:06 PM

big magazine reviews tend to be the worse for a variety of reasons. Greek metal hammer gave the new Stratovarius 9/10!...

Kronos 09-07-2005 01:20 PM

Tastes do vary a lot country to country, and also of course a lot depends on who does the review

Hells Bells 09-07-2005 01:21 PM

I know I really shouldn't talk because I'm not very articulate myself, but you expect articles that actually get published to at least be well written. Stuff like "exhudes attitude, vibrancy and enthusiasm" and "it defies human belief" sounds so over the top.

Stoic 09-07-2005 01:27 PM

I dont really mind this kind of language (="over the top", in fact I write a lot this way in my language) but what I hate is adopting a sarcastic attitude and bashing a band without giving actual reasons.
and also of course a lot depends on who does the review
Indeed, now I think of it its not quite accurate to say "metal hammer" rated this album with X but "a particular reviewer who writes for metal hammer" rated this album with X...

Yeah, some reviewers are total lowlives with huge chips on their shoulders. Bad reviews like that always remind me of that infamous one on Nightwish when they did one of their first gigs
"Crap band, sh1t equipment, no commercial potential....."
I wonder what he does for a living now

Lord Abortion 09-07-2005 01:37 PM

Yeah, he mentioned poor lyrical themes and so on, but nothing about the actual songs...

I usually don't mind it either. Over the top writing can be a lot of fun, but not when the writer has such a bad attitude. I guess I'm just being picky about the writing because that review pissed me off.

Really? Man that guy must feel like an *** now that they've become so successful.

Kronos 09-07-2005 01:54 PM

Yeah it's true. It hurt them so much that on End Of Innocence they waved the newspaper cutting in front of the camera - "Feck you!" so to speak. Those reviews must really cut. I know how upset I'd be if our band gets one like that

shadow_stalker 09-07-2005 03:30 PM

I got Takatalvi by Sonata ARctica in the mail today, it's bloody great (bit on the short side with 7 songs adding up to about 30 mins), 'Shy' is incredible definiatly one of their best songs (IMO).

on a side note does anyone know the uk site for nuclear blast?

Have I ever told you you're the best drummer I ever heard? :p

and I don't know the site, but I can get the number for one of their people to send demos to...

shadow_stalker 09-07-2005 03:40 PM

Why is it so bad? Is it mainly because they don't have any Sonata shirts?
I got mine from nuclearblast - it's a bit of a hoo-ha the 1st time you buy from them cos you have to fax them a copy of your card before they'll process your order. After that it's a doddle.

Iron Bars 09-09-2005 04:06 AM

I had the guitarist from my band listen to some Helloween and Edguy and now he wants to play some Powermetal with our band. Could someone recomend me some easy songs to start with, something with not to dificult solo's and so.

It is so bad because it wouldn't work for me, but after i posted that link it got going and started working, (still havn't found anywhere for Sonata shirts, looks like it's too ebay for me :upset: )

8 days till Dragonforce :thumb:

Frankenstein by Iced Earth is moderately tough to learn, but with some practice he should be able to pull it off.

Thor 09-09-2005 05:31 AM

My last power metal album I bought was the new Hammerfall album. I personally just thought it was completely average, nothing to special about it. Anyone else here have this CD?

Iron Bars 09-09-2005 07:37 AM

Sounds about right for us and its a pm song that has a audible bassline (I play bass).

Steerpike 09-09-2005 07:45 AM

It was a Steve DiGeorgio bass line, so it's guaranteed to be audible.

Iron Bars 09-09-2005 07:50 AM

Digeorgio is an amazing bassist, but its too bad he never stayed around long enough for more than one album with Iced Earth (if I remember correctly).

Chapter V Unbent, Unbowed, Unbroken? I've got it, and I like it loads. Never going to be a mind expanding album or anything groundbreaking; just good ol' powercheese with songs about crusaders and templars and stuff. Fun.

Lord Abortion 09-09-2005 08:44 AM

I caan't really get into Hammerfall, they don't seem to be anything special, they seem to be pretty good PM, but nothing individual or different.

Except Bloodbound, that rocks.

Kronos 09-09-2005 11:02 AM

I agree that there'll be nothing really new coming from them, but I think they are good at what they do and I like many of their songs. Nothing remarkable but solid and enjoyable.
Hang on, I can't think of another band that has a huge dude in armour with a hammer as big as he is smashing an expoding anvil as a show opener - that's a bit different... :)

Shattered_Future 09-09-2005 12:56 PM

Cmon...even their NAME is awesome.

Hammerfall's ok, from the one song I have by them...Hammer Of Justice.

I wonder where you got that from.... :D

ArcLite 09-09-2005 03:55 PM

I enjoyed Hammerfall for a while, but sinse broadening my PM collection there's other stuff I'd just rather listen to. So they don't get much air time anymore. But not a bad band by any means.

Stoic 09-09-2005 04:07 PM

I dislike Hammerfall, I find them too generic and forgettable (the verses) except for a couple of songs maybe.

shadow_stalker 09-09-2005 04:07 PM

I never really listend to hammerfall, people keep telling me that they sound the samea s either Ived Earth or Blind Guardian, not sure which

ArcLite 09-09-2005 04:08 PM

They sound nothing like IE or BG. They're more comparable to Dragonforce or Sonata Artica.

shadow_stalker 09-09-2005 04:10 PM

Hmm i should like them then

I cant decide who i like better Sonata or Dragonforce

btw Ollie if you see this on the off chance you were wanting to practice tomorrow (saturday) we cant because there is a wedding party-thing on, and i dont think they want us playing through it

ArcLite 09-09-2005 04:24 PM

Sonata and DF are better than Hammerfall. That's why I don't listen to them anymore. There's similar bands that are better. But check them out anyway.

Hitroshimite 09-09-2005 05:54 PM

I've always found Hammerfall kinda bland, personally. They've got some nice riffs and catchy tunes, but they're just another face in the power metal crowd.
