Marvelous 3 - Radio Tokyo

Never heard this before but I generally dislike stadium rock.

Begins with a piano part that is nice but has that annoying ballady intro sound to it. Oh well, at least it sounds nice. Then the chords. Oh yes, here it is. I like the bass part quite a bit. This is pretty likeable sounding. A movie soundtrack is where this belongs. Hmmmm... sounds like a Queen wanabe group based on the singer/guitarist. Queen is better but I like this.

The chorus is very catchy, as it should be I suppose. I like the vibe of this song. Good driving music it sounds li.e SOmething you belt out even if you don't know the words and makes you feel good. But, because I'm really giving it a listen, it's not such a good choice.

The guitar solo... is lame. Predictable and nothing really cool and then into the soft section again and let me guess... another chorus. Oh, there it is. How'd I know

And best part = fade-out. I hate fade-outs with a burning passion but I think the sample at the end is funny.

I've heard something by Martyr before, thanks to a certain excellent MXican, but it was a while ago and while I think it was good, I can't really remember it.
Martyr - Warpzone (or "Endless Vortex Towards Erasing Destiny", I'm not sure) - 3:18

At 3:18 long I'm expecting just a tearingly fast piece of technical, melodic death metal which I can't write a very good review for, so it's a pleasant surprise when the song starts with some reasonably fast, melodic intro guitar. The same basic melody is carried into the first riff of the song. This is nicely technical stuff - prominent, adventurous bassline, and a drummer interspersing lots of agile cymbal work with swift bursts on the smaller drums. Very nice.

Assuming all that was an introduction, the song proper has started now, with a new riff and more "metal" drums - plenty of double bass added, basically. A slow solo playing over the top, before the vocals come in, shockingly loud in this mix. They could probably have been toned down a bit. Anyway, the vocals are okay, a fair bit of hardcore influence, but he's nothing special (at the moment).

The instruments tear it up for a while with some quick changes after what I'm assuming was the first verse. Another verse - although I'm wanting to shy away from the word "verse" here, since this band seem to want to elude any kind of verse-bridge-chorus structure. After this we're treated to a different style of vocals; deep, low and slow, while the music slows down for a while (the drummer's still kicking ass all over the place, though).

And then, a solo. Given the quality of the music so far (the awesome bass and drumming, the inventiveness and variety of the guitars), the solo's a bit of a let-down. It's not bad, by any standards, it just doesn't hold my attention too well. At least until the two guitars start playing in tandem.

Everything speeds up now (I don't think the vocalist is going to make a reappearance), and the whole song seems to be frantically racing to a conclusion, which comes, rather suddenly, with the guitars climbing up, and two sharp bursts from the sticksman.

9/10 Very good song, nicely technical, and with a great quantity of ideas packed into it, especially considering it's length.

I like Oasis, but I've not heard this song. I'd assume it's from the new album?
Oasis - The Importance of Being Idle - 3:39

Starts off with a folky, pounding beat, mostly on the drums and jangly guitar. As the vocals start (sounds more like Liam than Noel, but I can never remember which is which anyway), the drums calm down, and the most prominent non-vocal noise is that jangly guitar. The lyrics seem to be about being lazy, which makes sense given the song title (which I like, by the way. Being lazy is awesome).

Main thread of the song changes to a kind of sing-song, watery, high-pitched beat, which is then overlaid with some nicely fuzzy guitar, before everything builds to a climax, the vocals cut out, and the guitar gets a chance to play around more or less on it's own for a while. I like the guitar here (about 1:25-140 so far, I think), it's good, in a lazy way.

The vocals come back in, and I like the lines (chorus?) he sings before the pounding drum precedes another verse - "give me a minute/a man's got a limit/I can't get a life if my heart's not in it". The next verse is good and catchy, just like the last time. This is great so far.

And the song basically repeats all that's gone on throughout the song, minus the solo guitar, to the end.

9/10 That was awesome. Great subject matter for the song, great lyrics, catchy, goo instrumentation.. I hope this is from the new album, because if so it makes the future look somewhat more positive.

Gang Of Four - Natural's Not In It - 3:06

Never heard of them but there time was well before i was born. Anyway I have a few bands in my collection that I can obviously see have been influenced by them.
Starts off with clinicaly precise, sharp guitar and then the drums come in with a nice pattern. The highlight for me is the bass line though which is really quite funky. This interesting for a while but the guitars really start to get on my nerves after a while and the vocals are not enough, or not to my taste enough, to liven it up. On about 2 minutes the drums stop and you have the guitars and the groups vocals which is nice but quite generic, once again the bass line comes back in and spices it up and is followed by the drums coming back in before the song just gradually fades out.
Overall i found it a bit boring, not something i'd listen to often, but it's not too bad. 5/10

Jason Mraz-On Love, In Sadness

This song starts off with a very smooth, lively intro of acoustic guitar, which also features a nice bass line. It then transfers to the verse where Mraz uses his fast, flowing, mellow, but hopeful lyrics. The song is extremely catchy and hooky, and was almost impossible to keep from tapping my foot during. His great delivery of the lyrics basically power the song along as well as the backing bands performance. Thankfully this was not a song that dragged on endlessly for 6 minutes or so. It was just a simple, gentle tune. While this is not usually a style of music I listen to, I did find it quite enjoyable and surprisingly listenable after all. I would say overall I would give it a 6.5/10 for the nice chorus, lively tempo, and flowing vocals.

Sublime - Ebin

That was the slowest 5 mb I ever downloaded... but what I know by Sublime already, it should be worth it.

It doesnt start off as ska, but gets there pretty soon. Lyrics about a guy called Ebin, who's changed, seems to be in a bad way, he's become a Nazi, and joined the CIA... lots of things. Theres some small fingerpicking sections every now and then, but they turn back to ska.

Maybe its a dodgy file, it seems to be clipping a bit. I'm not finding it too inspiring or anything so far. Just one of those songs that goes well in the background at a party. Theres a guitar solo, he sure can play.. but I don't like the sound of it that much, there's feedback that doesnt fit. There's also some hand percussion in there at times, which doesnt seem to fit.

The post-solo feel is good, it feels like it's building towards the end, and it does end fairly well, except for the squeaky feedback which spoils it a bit.

I've found that it can take time for Sublime songs to grow on you, but I don't see any potential for that with Ebin. Some of it was good, but then it was set back by being unnecissarily noisy. This band can, and has done better. 5/10

Fagan - Slight Return
I'm not particularly familiar with trip-hop, but I like what I've heard of it so it so this seems to be a good way to acquaint myself with more of it.

The song starts with kind of rolling synth chords which quickly make way for the drums. It's a good beat, and the slow tempo is relaxing. A few words are muttered, almost inaudibly, and various ascending/descending noises join in. It's like a really slow phase effect.
This continues, occasionally joined by a middle eastern sounding guitar part.
The additional parts drop out and the drums take center stage again.
The ascending/descending noises re-eter and the drums continue, though with a different snare sound.
The drums drop out briefly and piano/keys enter as a main instrument playing a sombre meoldy. The rolling synth parts from the beginning have also made another appearance.
The piano melody changes slightly and comes out sounding middle eastern again, and appears to be accompanied by a Sitar sample in the background.
The drums are fading out by this point, leave onl the middle eastern melodies and the ascending/descending noises.
These eventually fade out as wel, bringing the song to a close.

This song was great. The atmosphere was very trippy and spaced out and amazingly created. The use of samples was great and the whole song was put together well. I think I'll be downloading some more of this stuff.

Wow, this track is bloody good. When I look at the ‘Goth Rock’ tag, I thought they would be just another Nightwish imitation, but they pull their music of very well, and I saw it as a mixture of Arcturus and Emperor in a strange way. The screams were very BM, and it honestly sounded like he was murdering/being murdered.

Musically the track is very nice as well, the keys/synths are very well placed and atmospheric, and unlike a lot of similar bands, tremolo picked guitar riffs were not overused at all. Drumming was very much average, I could hear anything spectacular, but then again the drums were pretty low in the mix and I think he was playing an electronic kit.

Overall, a very nice song. I loved the vocals and keys most, but the whole sound combined to make a very good and dare I say scary listening experience.

Our Lady Peace - Starseed (Armageddon Remix)

Some acoustic guitar opens, reminds me of John Butler Trio meets old Pearl Jam pretty much straight away.

Hm, I see where the Pearl Jam comparison came from, they move into some straight out semi-hard rock, some lead guitar in there too. It stands as a reminder that I haven't heard some "normal" rock in quite a while.

This vocalist sounds familiar too.. singer from Live, maybe. Is the music good in it's ease of listening? Well , it's certainly not bad, but I'm not finding that much to rave about.

The chorus is a bit harder, the voices are being harmonized and more melodic. Theres verse, chorus, bridge, all in pretty standard pattern. The ending is super dodgy, the music had been decent until now. Oh well, it was only one part of the song, but important none the less.

Just a friendly rock song, well put together. apart from the end. There's not too much to say about it really. I didn't hear that eastern influence. It might be a good song to escape back to some easier music every now and then.
6.5/10, would be 7 with a better ending.

The Red Paintings - The Streets Fell Into My Window

Never heard anythign by them before but after my pleasant suprise of hearing Murder By Death, I am hopeful.

Begins with a cello. That's always good. Spoken word, like a narrator. He's telling the story of Through the Looking Glass or Alice in Wonderland. THe first, it's about the rabbit. Very cool and atmospheric. Then a guitar, palm muted enters. When the drumns come in, it all gets quite frantic. THe words become jumbled and layered and a chorus
fills everything in nicely.

I love this! One of my favorite books in an awesome song.

The singer has a pretty good voice, not annoying but not beautiful. Emotive. He is singing about a doorway to his love. I like the instrumentation and the atmosphere created by all the reverb and background noises. I really like the verse/chorus arrangement here because they are both great with lots of variation and fairly long so you hardly notice the pattern. His voice reminds me of a less practiced Ben Folds.

I like the drummer. Reminds me of the Muse drummer with all the toms. The violin solo and the arrangemtn and weirdness and goodness of it all makes me very happy. I love this art rock business. And I thought Dredg and Soli i Sombra were good.

Goldfinger - Just Like Heaven - 1:55

Starts with a random vocal then launches into a traditional pop-punk drumbeat and song. I like it from the first few seconds. I mean it's fun at least :D
Around 23 secs nice effect comes i on the guitar and were already in the second verse after 40 seconds. Im enjoying it. Chorus along with nice guitar effect comes back in on the minute mark followed by nice guitar solo part (very tiny guitar solo)before the bridge which is a nice change with just bass and drums and distorted vocal then launches back into the final verse and chorus before you can say pop-punk. Not alot you can say about a song this simple but i enjoyed it, 8/10.

The Datsuns-MF from Hell (classic rock n roll) should be able to find this one.
