I really am in a cynical mood but that came after I heard the song. I deleted it already anyway. Not to mention my girl is out of town except for two days this whole spring break and she's not doing a good job of replying to my texts and calls, so I'm pissed about that too.

Hehe I knew that would kill the thread.

She's got you in the vice grip, man. Jake says: Blame girls for people not liking Tool. And Blair, just for the sake of blaming Blair. /// Alternate version Vicarious - Like that would ever get played on the radio. If someone honestly thought Tool would release that as a single, they should seriously get retake grade school. |
Hehe I knew that would kill the thread.
Is that in reference to me? I distinctly remember you posting somthing provocative to Jake. |
I deleted the post to avoid double posting while at the same time bumping the thread up, but it was in reference to what I posted, not you.
|
it would be so TOOL to release a instrumental as a single

Ok.:thumb: Singles are gay. |

I heard Triad on the radio once. NP: Deftones - Around the Fur Groove on. |
Triad blows.... It's not even because of the mood I'm in, I've just always hated the song.
Congrats on the 8,000 Jake. |
There we have our Meshuggah influence we've heard so much about from Carey. :p
Man, I love the line "I need to watch things die from a good safe distance." What do you all think of the TRUSTcompany-esque vocals during the verse?
i think the scratchy sounding vocals doesnt fit maynard |
Are you talking about the vox during the verse? If yes, then I agreed on my first few listens, then it grew on me. I still think it sounds a lot like TRUSTcompany though.
|
I think the vocals were a little to in the background, except for the end where they are spot on IMO. That's probably my only beef with the song worth even mentioning.
|
I agree. Studio Triad is one of the weakest points of Lateralus...I think it's great live though... |

the vocalist of trustcompany can do it naturally, maynard does it differently ( i guess he want to sound more old school hard rock ). Or it could be vocal effects , which i heard would be used more in this album. vocal distortion |
I agree. Studio Triad is one of the weakest points of Lateralus...I think it's great live though...
I'd say it's the weakest point on Lateralus. I still really dig the track, but every album has to have a weak point somewhere, right? I don't think it's a vocal effect..Could be, but eh. |
I actually always thought Triad was one of Lateralus' highlights.
K I'm gonna record the bassline for the intro... I guess to give an idea to those who were curious about it. |
whatever this album is gonna get big ( its a good and bad thing )

[Stand alone post. Refers to no one.]
I have heard this single compared to everything in their cataloge, from "Schism" to "Triad". Here's my two cents: Does anyone remember "The Grudge"? How about "Stinkfist"? Finally, "Intolerance"? To me each of these songs were an intro into the coming album, and a homage to the past. "Intolerance" had that grunge feel that the "Opiate" album was. Then, you can see the same in the *album starter* of "Stinkfist" as it brings the meaty punch of it's past "Undertow" album, and reminisce of their days with RATM. Finally, there was "The Grudge", which to me was a homage to their "Aenima" album with it's heavy feel (even though the rest of the album was not so much).. I see a pattern, and "Vicarious" falls nicely within it. This is a new album for a new generation of Tool fans, and old fans. Something didn't fit whenever I noticed the simple, and familiar sounds, of the beginning riffs to then all of a sudden at the end of the song get extremely articulate. If the pattern is correct, then I see how this *is* the beginning track to the new album.. It's a homage to a past record, and an intro to the new album. It neither alienates us old fans, and it give a tastes of their past history to the noobs.. If that is too much to read, how about I just a "Wah!"..? :p |
Of course being the single Vicarious is also going to be the most commercial track on the album. I can see some of the other tracks being a bit longer and more progressive. But to be honest Vicarious is my favourite type of tool song, the kind that doesnt get bogged down in their desire to be artsy and floydian. That kind of stuff thrilled me when Lateralus was released but I think I have moved away from it a bit, which might explain why I subsequently became a big fan of APC.
Personally if the album is arranged in much the same fashion as Vicarious I will be very pleased, and I guess a lot of other people wont. It all depends on your expectations. |
I really don't agree about Stinkfist. Doesn't sound anything like Undertow.
Also Vicarious doesn't sound like most of Lateralus aside from The Grudge, which was supposed to be an introduction song right? |
It doesnt sound like any one song from lateralus, but it has elements from most of it, it is structured a lot like schism, the "why dont we just admit it" guitar line is basically lifted straight from the grudge and the intro is very lateralus. But Lateralus being their crowning work, imo and theirs too from what i have read I am not surprised they have chosen to use it as a kind of template to build upon.
|
indeed..
|
Na Vicarious more of a cross between the songs on the Lateralus and Aenima albums to me, which is a good thing. The lyrics aren't what i was expecting (although i actually enjoyed the la la la lie section) but you can't judge an album by one song.
I have a friend who went to the Melbourne listening party who said that Vicarious is the probably the weakest and most radio friendly song on the album so I'm hardly worried about the album sucking, by her accounts 10,000 days (the song) is supposed to slay! Oh well not long til the end of April now |
i cant wait hey im dying here maybe some laxatives will keep me busy for a while haha
|
This is what someone on toolband claims to have found i dont no what to think what about u: Okay, I know I'm about to sound like a loser, but the idea popped into my head and I got as far as I did in like two hours. So I do have life, I was jus t bored and sick, so I went for it.
I read Kibar's breakdown of his April Fools joke, terrible I know, but it got us off the trail of Blair's. This is the post made on Toolband on April 1st: 01 Apr 06 SINGLE Here's some amazing ****: The new Tool single, "Vicarious" will officially be heard on radio on April 17th. That's all I've got... so to the Fox & Hounds I go. locking the door... I left the "Here's some amazing ****" thing alone. Every thing else, I started to rearange. I was left with these letters left over. CIAR O IS CROWLEY TITL This is what I got with the rest: APRIL FOOLS THIS SONG IS A HOAX LOOK FOR THE REAL THING ON TOOLBAND ON THE 17TH ALL WHO FIGURE IT OUT I'LL GIVE ONE CD & LIVE DVD Any other word puzzlers out there? Maybe we're just reaching. But everyone loves a good mystery. |
This thread contradicts itself so much during the night. It's funny to see the conclusions people are jumping to after one song.
Loading up a certain MP3 on my player now, then going for a little walk. Time to hear all these meshuggah moments/non meshuggah influenced at all, the song that sounds like lateralus/is nothing like lateralus, is the new tool single/is a B side joke, is a big step forward for Tool/is the worst thing they've ever done. Thankfully I still have an open mind :) |
i dont know about you guys, but Tool is not the kind of band which has a certain song thats so catchy or nice, that i buy their album.. excluding 'sober', which is the song that got me into the band. I think that its the whole album that gives a picture .. thats how i felt about lateralus and aenima.

yeah man definently the whole album tells a story thats part of the reason i like tool so much |
Well I had flashbacks to the first time I heard The Grudge on that song. Not saying I thought it was a Grudge MkII, but it was a heavy first listen, which didnt give me time to take everything in.
Least I can now take what people are saying about it and compare to what i've heard now. It also confirms what I thought about people who think its such a terrible thing, are the ones that had a closed mind towards Lateralus |
WTF IS THIS!!! http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=71290529

it says the accounts been deleted what was it
|
aww man that was weird. it was a different version of vicarious and there was maynards voice in it...
|
Moses, saying that fake 2-3 minute Vicarious was catchier than the real one is nuts.
Anyway, I really like the song. I'm not disappointed. The lyrics arn't terrible, they're just not very psuedo-intellectual spiritual like Lateralus was mostly. I enjoyed Lateralus for what it was, and I enjoy this song for what it is. I don't see how these lyrics are 'worse' than singing about anal fisting as a metaphor for desensitaisation, or shouting "WHY CAN WE NOT BE SOBER", or saying to suck on this, I hope you choke. I enjoy all of those songs for what they are. Maynard is singing about stuff that matters to him in a more down to earth way, and I can dig that. |

wtf is this...?????????

I think people are still in shock after hearing lalalala's in a Tool song.
MJK has been my least favourite Tool member from the start so the lyrics never bother me. They all get butchered by over-over analysis, while the instrumental gets left alone to be what it is. |

It might not be Maynard. A lot of singers have tried to rip off his style. It really does sound like him though... though a little odd in places for him maybe.
