Aenima is definitely their most well-done album in my eyes because it not only has brilliant prog songs, but it progresses as an album too. My favorite songs are Stinkfist, Push!t, Third Eye, and Eulogy...and all are on Aenima, so naturally that would be my favorite album.
What do you mean by that?

siva_chair 09-10-2005 10:57 AM

I can't wait until Opeth plays in Lawrence, KS in October.

/road trip'd

siva_chair 09-10-2005 11:02 AM

Can anyone suggest any Melvins? I haven't heard much of them and wish to, so if anyone could reccomend some of their best stuff, that would grand.
What do you mean by that?
The former half of the album with songs like Stinkfist, 46 & 2, and H. are shorter less prog songs but are still good. As you get later into the album (with a few exceptions) the songs get more progressive and the fillers get more interesting. The more progressive songs at the beginning (Eulogy) are not as drawn out and experimental as the later prog songs as Push!t and Third Eye.

Just a small observation. But I think the album flows/progresses better on Aenima than on Lateralus.

Eulogy is extremely drawn out though. I think one of the things I don't like about Aenima is that not all the parts of the songs work. I hate the ending to the song Aenema. Eulogy has a couple weak parts. I don't really like H much, and I really don't like Jimmy. Lateralus has an interesting track order. The Grudge works as an opener (although Parabol/Parabola would be ****ing awesome too). I like where The Patient is too, and I think that flows fine into Mantra into Schism. I hate how Ticks and Leeches is after Parabola. It just doesn't seem to fit there. I'm thinking, Parabol/Parabola to open the album. Then, much later into the album, you put The Grudge followed by Ticks and Leeches to end the album. I can understand your complaint about the repetitiveness of Lateralus. I personally don't mind it all, it's one of my favorite cds of all time, but I know where you're coming from.

Daven 09-10-2005 12:29 PM

Aenima is a great album, but i like more Lateralus. Maybe because its more proggressive, while Aenima still has some characterisitcs Undertow shows; especially the first songs. I like thw way the style of each album has advanced, to a dark feeling to a more progressive way.

Artemician 09-10-2005 12:36 PM

Yeah, each album does progress a lot. You can really see Tool's 'journey', if you will, through music. My personal favorite is and always has been Lateralus. It's just much brighter than the others and much more complex as well. I love the mathematical feel of it.

Darkness 09-10-2005 12:37 PM

Yeah I agree with Artemician. I can't wait to see the progression on the new cd... :D

YouGottaBeCrazy 09-10-2005 12:39 PM
I love the mathematical feel of it.
Weird too, because I'd much rather listen to Lateralus than do Math homework. :p

Futuro 09-10-2005 12:41 PM
Just a small observation. But I think the album flows/progresses better on Aenima than on Lateralus.
same here, i think lateralus (album) was monotone, there only great album IMO was Aenima. When i hear lateralus (album) theres not a ton of difference between songs, besides Schism and Lateralus (song).

Magicaltroll 09-10-2005 12:50 PM

Does anyone know if Mr. Bungle has an album, or a bootleg, of a High School Talent show thing?

I found one that is labeled Mr Bungle, but I don't know... It's definitely weird enough.

Dried Muffin Remnants 09-10-2005 12:51 PM

Yeah, Lateralus definitely has that monotone sludge sound and it's too long. Still a very good album; it's just not as brilliant as so many people believe. However, it's not horrible "wanking sludge" as Pitchfork calls it.

Magicaltroll 09-10-2005 12:55 PM

I love Lateralus, I think it flows greatly.
And I don't think it's long enough :p

Artemician 09-10-2005 12:56 PM

Normally variety would be preferable, but for some reason Lateralus' songs just flow so much better for me. Again, the whole mathematical feel is present throughtout the whole album.

EDIT: Yay! Hundredth post. This is kind of pathetic actually, I've been here longer than a lot of you and I'm only now getting my hundredth.

Hurray for being a lurker!

Reflection, Triad, and the Patient are too long.

Kage 09-10-2005 01:00 PM

Triad I agree with, but in my opinon you couldn't be more wrong about Reflection and The Patient.

YouGottaBeCrazy 09-10-2005 01:00 PM
Reflection and the Patient are too long.
No. Eulogy, Aenema, H, and Third Eye are too long. Anyone who can't find the variety in Lateralus just hasn't listened to it enough. It's like saying every song on Master of Puppets sounds the same.

Magicaltroll 09-10-2005 01:01 PM
Reflection, Triad, and the Patient are too long.
Reflection is too long!?!
You're crazy.
Third Eye are too long.
Artemician 09-10-2005 01:04 PM

I like how long Triad is, it makes a great build-up for the end.

Daven 09-10-2005 01:04 PM
Triad I agree with, but in my opinon you couldn't be more wrong about Reflection and The Patient.
I agree with you, Triad is too long and it can get boring; but Reflection and The Patient arent too long, They are certainly too long if you dont like them.

Yeah! That's right, I said it!

Dried Muffin Remnants 09-10-2005 01:11 PM

How could Third Eye be too long? The song changes every second. It's one huge crescendo. The Patient is very very repetitive.

LATERALUS IS THE WORST ALBUM EVAR!!!1eleven

heavy metal kid 09-10-2005 01:15 PM

One thing i find annoying on Tool, is the large noise sounds.
Like the intro of Eulogy, but the rest of the song is awesome.

It's just too long (in my opinion) by a bit.

Oh, well, maybe you should listen to it again.

Futuro 09-10-2005 01:22 PM

im not saying lateralus sucks, but my favorite song is on aenima, so my opinion is biased to all hell. :D

Dried Muffin Remnants 09-10-2005 01:22 PM

I think Aenima has better ambience/sound effects than Lateralus does.

Third Eye has brilliant sound effects.

YouGottaBeCrazy 09-10-2005 01:23 PM

"Lateralus" has a gong!

heavy metal kid 09-10-2005 01:24 PM

I also like more Aenima than Lateralus.

Musically Lateralus is better, but Aenima's structure is brilliant.
