applying for a scholarship to study arabic in an arabic country over the summer, there are 4 mini-essays

first one:

I first became interested in the Arabic language when reading of its triconsonantal root system in my Introduction to Linguistics class. At this point, my linguistic knowledge was limited to Indo-European, with the equivalent of three years of Latin in high school and self-taught Ancient Greek, as well as a rudimentary understanding of the grammar of a handful of other Indo-European languages. The possibilities of the Arabic root system – how the simple substitution of vowels could change the meaning of a word – fascinated me, and I desired to learn more about it. Over the next year, I acquired a couple of Arabic books, and began to teach myself the basis of Arabic – the broken plurals, the perfect/imperfect, idafa, et cetera. Upon my first year of college, I enrolled in beginning Arabic and found I excelled it; this continued into my second year. By the summer of 2010, I will have taken two full years of college Arabic, as well as an upper-level Linguistics/Arabic Studies course concerning the status of Arabic language in Arabic society.
