Killtacular 04-16-2006 01:04 PM

Proper release day.

Kage 04-16-2006 01:07 PM

Ah, that's right. I still might not listen to it.

Rounder 04-16-2006 01:42 PM

Hey it's already monday the 17th in Australia isn't it? So if you want to be 'legit' you could go ahead and give it a listen....And it's Maynards birthday too, and mine :) hb to me!

centrum 04-16-2006 01:42 PM

I really like the mixing/tones of the guitars in Vicarious. I love the bass just flapping in the first hard riff.

denboy 04-16-2006 01:45 PM
You can count it out like that... doesn't seem right at all though. I guess just cause all the downbeats are misplaced.
Edit: I feel more comfortable counting the whole riff out in 40/8
The whole thing carries a solid 5/4 feel all the way through though, so counting it in anything else would be illogical

BlindWriting 04-16-2006 02:06 PM

So, I was looking at the January 2006 Toolband newsletter (the one with the Ouija board) to see if, knowing what we all know now, any hidden information would come to light.

So far, we all already know about the anagram: "A or ET tests on D" can be switched around to mean "Rosetta Stoned". However, a couple other things might be of interest.
Q: On what date will the single from the album be released in the US?

A: PORV

(NOTE: I've always thought there should be a REPHRASE spot on the board).

Q: On what date, exactly, will the single Tool's new record be released in the US?

A: VORP

(NOTE: Unfortunately, at the time I didn't realize that the entity was asking ME a question. There should have been a space, making it P or V... or V or P, meaning that it was asking me which single I was referring to. It should, however, be noted that the initials are correct, save for a letter omitted by Obelisong).
So there we go. Obviously, V stands for Vicarious, and P stands for The Pot, with the "T" in "The" being the initial that was left out of the answer. So, we've got two definite singles/videos to look forward to.

Next:
Q: In one word, how would you describe the song that the band is currently mixing?

A: JAM
Jambi! Of course.

So hopefully as we get more information (namely the ability to listen to the album itself) we can look back on this crap and pick out those little tidbits of information that were supposedly right in front of us.

Oh, and Vicarious is in 10/8. No question. I would say it was 5/4, but there are two different rhythms that occur throughout the song, and because the meter doesn't change, it has to be in 10.

The two rhythms are:
1. one two THREE four five six SEVEN eight NINE ten
2. one two three FOUR five six seven EIGHT nine TEN

If you were to write down the music for, say, the drums, it would be awkward to divide the parts into quarter notes of five.

Killtacular 04-16-2006 02:16 PM

There's a self-victory. I told myself it was in 10/8 when I first heard it.

Score one for Scruples.

Futuro 04-16-2006 02:38 PM

I'll keep counting it in 4 thanks.

/Flexes Metric modulation muscle.
Ah, good eye.

Det_Nosnip 04-16-2006 03:33 PM

I'm a little late because I was out of town this weekend...listening to Vicarious now. Whoa....

Det_Nosnip 04-16-2006 03:35 PM

Ah, good eye.
 Are you serious? That would give me a headache. The song's clearly in 5, or an overwhelming majority of it, at least.

Futuro 04-16-2006 03:44 PM
 Are you serious? That would give me a headache. The song's clearly in 5, or an overwhelming majority of it, at least.
Yeah, its 5. Try counting it in a 16th variation like 17 or 19 or 21 etc etc.

good for teh mind.

denboy 04-16-2006 03:47 PM

I love how they throw in an extra beat now and again to spice it up, like when maynard sings "Hands to the sky crying".. And especially at the part where he adds "good safe" to the line "I need to watch things die from a distance "

Triangle 04-16-2006 03:59 PM

Ah, I cannot get enough of this song.

Dr. Jake Destructo 04-16-2006 04:00 PM

There we have our Meshuggah influence we've heard so much about from Carey. :p

Man, I love the line "I need to watch things die from a good safe distance."

What do you all think of the TRUSTcompany-esque vocals during the verse?

denboy 04-16-2006 04:00 PM

I didn't really expect to be this hooked on the single... i haven't listened to anything else since I got it

Darkness 04-16-2006 04:01 PM

I guess my Tool fast is officially over. :)

Dr. Jake Destructo 04-16-2006 04:02 PM
I didn't really expect to be this hooked on the single... i haven't listened to anything else since I got it
Same here, except I've also listened to Ænima.

denboy 04-16-2006 04:04 PM

I've felt the urge to dig out Ænema, and Lateralus too, but I'm so lazy that I just end up listening to Vicarious again instead :p

UpperDecker 04-16-2006 04:16 PM

I don't know if you know already but there's a pretty long interview in GuitarWorld magazine with their guitarist. One of the things that shocked me was he said really only took them about a year to make the new record. Its a good read if you wanna pick it up.

Moses 04-16-2006 04:19 PM

I've decided to listen to the single.

denboy 04-16-2006 04:21 PM

You go girl!

Shadius 04-16-2006 04:21 PM

Cool, how's that going? I've been out all day and i've just got back and put the single on now I'm settled at the computer.

Dr. Jake Destructo 04-16-2006 04:21 PM

Someone's already tabbed out Vicarious. Nuts.
/beaten

Shadius 04-16-2006 04:22 PM

Dude, that was on the last page or the one before!

On Tool Navy, there was some people who had already tabbed that 30 second clip like not hours after it was released. It's insane.

denboy 04-16-2006 04:23 PM

And it seems off.. Or is it just me? I don't even think the intro riff sounds right (either of the two guitars)

Shadius 04-16-2006 04:27 PM

I think this single has sort of crammed a lot of the reasons why I liked Tool in the first place into one song, with a little extra.

Dr. Jake Destructo 04-16-2006 04:29 PM

There's too much going on for me to decide if it's off or not after only 10 listens, heh.

denboy 04-16-2006 04:31 PM

I'd love a guitar pro or powertab for it

Darkness 04-16-2006 04:33 PM
There's too much going on for me to decide if it's off or not after only 10 listens, heh.
Don't kill the song, dude... it'll make the album sound that much more fresh once you hear the whole thing. :p

denboy 04-16-2006 04:33 PM

I hears schism so many times before actually buying Lateralus.. I even completely memorized the whole song by learning it on guitar.. And it didn't take anything away from the whole experience at all

Dr. Jake Destructo 04-16-2006 04:36 PM
I'd love a guitar pro or powertab for it
I think there's one of the 30 second clip on tdn..But I'd rather have the whole thing, heh.

Mike - If the album is killable, it will die. Even after probably 300 listens to Lateralus, I still love it. Same with Ænima and Undertow, to lesser extents.

Anyways, don't worry about me. I think I'll ease up on the listening anyways, heh.

Darkness 04-16-2006 04:36 PM

Oh. It would for me.. I'm trying to not over play it.

denboy 04-16-2006 04:40 PM

There's one bad thing about this song... . .. I haven't been able to write any music the past 2 days because my inner ear keep hearing the riffs for Vicarious whenever I'm not actually having it blasting through my speakers

deadohiosky9 04-16-2006 04:41 PM

It's kind of hard to overplay Tool songs. I've never gotten tired of any. I've listened to Lateralus god knows how many times, and it still hasn't gotten old.

Vicarious has actually inspired me to write more riffs rather than stopped me from writing.

Duncster 04-16-2006 05:15 PM

Just tabbed out the bassline for the intro (or close to it) for Vicarious
I got

D-12-0-0-10-0-0-12-0-0-12h14p12-0-10-0-0-12-0-0-14-15p14-0-

D-14/12-0-10-0-0-12h14p14-0-10-0-0-12-0-10-

I'll post a recording up. Well my bass is at my drummers so maybe I'll record through acoustic guitar to give the idea?

deadohiosky9 04-16-2006 05:36 PM

Do it.

circlethedrain 04-16-2006 05:59 PM

Im kinda underwhelmed by the song.

I hate the Messugah part.

The lyrics are good, but nothing amazing

Guitar parts sound old now too much "Lateralus" in them

But I still think it is a good song just not what I was hoping for, but I think no matter what they put out I would have felt that way.

Has anyone heard the whole album?

Dr. Jake Destructo 04-16-2006 06:26 PM

Nobody here has.

deadohiosky9 04-16-2006 06:27 PM
Im kinda underwhelmed by the song.
That's exactly how I felt when I first heard it.

Shadius 04-16-2006 06:28 PM

That's what expectations do for you.
