@blockhead I apologise for sounding snarky. but when you've played pen & paper RPGs, you might get annoyed that railroad-adventure games that have no resemblance to RPGs are referred to as RPGs. I furthermore accept that there are minor elements of role-playing in those games.
I'm not offended. Most JRPGs are really linear with a few sidequests and some customization. I like chrono trigger, ff6, ff7, ff9 and earthbound a lot. I tried to play Suikoden but got really bored with it.

Oblivion and Skyrim bored me to tears.

Angmar 01-05-2012 02:51 PM

Haven't played DnD in ages, would probably be fun to play again.

shooters are like the linkin park of videogames in my honest opinion

when i think of those games i think of 12 year olds playing them on xbox live because that's the target audience

If any of you homos went to my school you would've got beaten up.

Brent is prolly straighter than you alex (srs), and he's an actual elf not a pretend 1.

@blockhead
Morrowind is a lot better than those games. they are quite honestly shit. Morrowind suffers from the same amount of bugs and piss poor programming, but it is a much better designed game.

I can maybe consider Oblivion and Skyrim RPGs, because they do in fact allow you to create a role and so forth. but they lack a DM. what makes a DM (Dungeon Master - aka GM (Game Master) and a bunch of other acronyms, heh) so crucial, is that he can feed off the player(s), and alter the experience based on in-game and out-of-game feedback both. this won't happen in Oblivion or Skyrim. and the stories and gameplay is not fruitful enough to warrant a play-through based on either.

anyway, I can definitely understand those games not appealing to you. "JRPGs" are far more direct and focused, and consequently more action-packed, and with a vivid and breathing story in which often a bunch of interesting characters develop deep relationships. it's like a well-directed film, where many western RPGs are more like a sand pit. here's a spade - have fun.

but if they had a DM... a director... they could make the game fun for you, or anyone else, based on feedback. this is one of the biggest strengths of getting together with your mates to play DnD instead.

sorry for the tl;dr. it was just interesting and nice to get any other response than "shut up faggot", heh.

most recent shooters claim to focus on realism but then they play like unreal tournament, it's weird

but I agree

best shooters are the ones that try and be realistic to the point where it's painful or shooters that are arcade-y as fuck

they aren't

i mean console games in general are targeted at kids, young men or families

12 year olds are just very visible on games like CoD because the community is very broad, chaotic and aggressive

Blazey 01-05-2012 02:59 PM

I love FF7 and JRPG's. I don't play them anymore cuz I have betta things to do and don't have the patience anymore but I still kill it in CoD. But I only play CoD with friends

Anyway can we make fun of Fingas? I rememba him saying he'd play FF together with 3-4 friends. I don't make fun of ppl with love of video games who even take an a elitist stance but wow is Fingas and his friends faggots.

I've always wanted to play DnD i think I might like it a lot. And yeah I like JRPGs because of the story and I like the turn based battle system a lot more than action RPGs. I've never played Morrowind but everyone says it's way better than Oblivion or Skyrim. What about it is so different/better?

I like a lot of shooters. just like I like all genres of music, I like all genres of games (and films, and books, and so on).

there are different types of shooters, and they have different attractions. if I allow myself to substitute the word "shooter" with the phrase that came with the id games of the '90s - FPS, I can talk about this a bit more broadly.

Blood, DOOM and Quake (1) are great examples of early FPS. their strengths are a sinister mood, well-designed levels and really evil monsters. (and in the case of Blood, an equally evil and awesome protagonist.) it's all about the mood and the visual design, as well as the satisfaction of blowing up monsters from hell. it's a journey.

then you have Nexuiz, Quake III: Arena and Painkiller. this type is about adrenaline. nothing else. you play it fast while listening to DnB or techno, and drinking energy drinks. these games are also highly suitable for multi-player.

the third type I'd like to mention is the other meaning of FPS. FPS is often thought to mean "first-person shooters", but it actually also refers to first-person slashers. Witchhaven II, Hexen and Heretic are examples (and actually to a certain degree and in a specific play-style Skyrim as well) of this type. this is akin to the first type I mentioned, but with "mediæval crap" with spells and blades and bows and staffs and so on, haha. obviously I love this stuff.

there are a bunch of other types of FPS, naturally, like satire, sci-fi, war, and so on - but these are some of my favourites, and this is already tl;dr enough as is. my point is just that there are a lot of different types of FPS, so you shouldn't label them all "the Linkin Park of video games", haha.

it doesn't do insanely stupid shit like level-scaling. this is where the game is equally difficult no matter what level you are in. in Oblivion, a wolf pup is as hard at the beginning of the game as towards the end. in Skyrim you can kill a dragon right after popping the disc in.

Morrowind is a lot more difficult, and so it is more satisfying to master. at the beginning a fucking beetle will MURDER YOU.

it's still an unfocused open-world sand-pit that hands you a spade though. don't think you'll like it.

maybe you'd enjoy Baldur's Gate. it has a very strong story, and very engaging characters. it is slow-paced and "talky" though, so you need to enjoy text bubbles, haha. it's an old-school DnD-based computer RPG.
