Country/Folk/Bluegrass influenced Rock bands > Blues influenced Rock bands.

;)

wanton 02-24-2005 09:07 PM
They're all Blues based. You can't go wrong by picking any of the three, Blues wise.

Though, Deepest End, Deep End: Vol. 1 > Dose
Any song recommendations?

Glitterati 02-24-2005 09:07 PM
I try to learn as many Blues songs as I can. I find that most good rock bands hold their roots in blues.
True. Everyone from Bob Dylan and Eric Clapton to AC/DC and Guns N' Roses have roots in blues.

Like?

Not saying your wrong just wondering because bands like Led Zepplin, Pink Floyd, Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, and The Beatles are awsome.

Badmoon 02-24-2005 09:17 PM

Well, it's opinion, and you seem to be doubting the Country and Folk influence on The Beatles. They have numerous amounts of Countryish songs.

New Riders of the Purple Sage
Grateful Dead
Widespread Panic
The String Cheese Incident
The Byrds
The Flying Burrito Brothers
Buffalo Springfield
Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young
Bob Dylan
Moby Grape
The Band
etc

Great, great bands.

Jam2Me 02-24-2005 09:24 PM

and Phish for that other list...

pigonthewing82 02-24-2005 09:24 PM
I don't know if I would call PF blues based.
Well I didn't say blues based I said blues influenced, and I've heard a couple of PF songs where you can pick out blues influences like Semus (I can usually think of more, but I can't think very well right now for .......reasons)
I don't know if I would call PF blues based.
There are definitely blues roots in their music, although it's more defined by the incredibly large amounts of drugs they were ingesting at the time.

Heh, the band was named after blues musicians, though. (Floyd Council and Pink Anderson)

lunch998 02-24-2005 09:26 PM
and Phish for that other list...
I just got A Live One.

When you say blues-influenced rock Pink Floyd doesn't immediately come to mind.

Break Phish down and you get Jazz. Definitely not Blues or any form of Country.

I found that out earlier today...I think from Amazon.com CD review or something. Oh God my blood is boiling, I'll try not to rant.

Amazon.com probably has the most retarded people possible writing CD reviews. This one I read a few seconds ago so I'll choose it:
He wasn't the most accomplished member of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young--or even of Crosby, Stills &Nash, for that matter. But his songs are certainly in a league with those of the other members, and it's chiefly on his solo albums that Stills's own personality comes through. Buffalo Springfield's "For What It's Worth" belongs to Stills, which shows where his influences lie. The hits "Love the One You're With" and "Sit Yourself Down," both of which live here, show how they developed. Sensitive? Lyrical? Not exactly. Think rugged denim, an acoustic guitar, and a woman at home to sew on his appliqués and pick the seeds out of the pot.
That person must be really proud of that display of pure idiocrisy. I've read hundreds of Amazon.com reviewers should be trying to get someone to buy the Cd...they do the exact opposite from what I've read. I only go by intelligent reviews from consumers.

Very true, I always think of them as psychadelic rock.

Stills is quite possibly the best songwriter, guitar player, and singer in CSNY. Plus he is one of the world's greatest guitarists.

The only Jazzy album I can think of is Hoist, the first song on that album..other then that I would say folk or bluegrass. Mike Gordon is a drummer for various bluegrass artists now.

Badmoon 02-24-2005 09:40 PM

You mean John Fishman? And "Julius" is a Gospel/Blues song. Listen to Lawn Boy, Rift, Junta, etc. They are pretty much a Jazz band, with a few slight exceptions.

Keep in mind I'm not saying there are no Bluegrass characteristics in the band. Mike is more of a Bluegrass player than anything.

:)

Heh no I meant bassist, dunno much about Fishman.
And I'm just wondering do you like Rift? I listened to it recently I think it has some serious weak points. EDIT: And yeah I agree definitely about the jazz influence among others.

Hmm, do you guys discuss Phish much here? Extremely good/popular band I'm surprised they're not mentioned more on these forums, the Jam Band thread is pretty dead.

Badmoon 02-24-2005 09:49 PM

Mike Gordon - Bassist
John Fishman - Drummer

You mixed up somewhere there :)

I like Rift.

lunch998 02-24-2005 09:49 PM

I only just got into them, but A Live One blew me away.

Heh I was at their last show in Coventry, freakin' like 4 inches of mud layered the ground and I had to sleep with two guys crammed in the back of a van, but it was all worth it. It was my first and last Phish concert.

Stephen Stills was better/more successful then Nash and Crosby (I'm thinking of way to solo into an adverb) when talkinga bout their solo careers. You obviously don't know anything about the matter, it's not opinion it's fact.

Here, if I said "Jimi Hendrix is a crap guitarist. He could play a G chord if his life depended on it."

Would you accept my opinion, or pass me off as ignorant?

It is an opinion, but it is ignorant and just wrong.

Well you shoulda said "He couldn't play a G chord..", it woulda made more sense that way.

But you're definitely right, there is a fine line between opinion and ignorance...but it's usually not as noticable until the person refuses to accept any one elses opinions. Disconnection Notice for example.

Just kidding Disconnection Notice. :thumb:

Of course it's a typo, I figured that...I just noticed you had already edited your post without bothering to fix the typo.

I actually didn't know you were online when I posted that Disconnection Notice, but it's quite humourous now that you are.

I think I'm going to go on a weekend long binge of learning as many Jimi Hendrix songs as I can. I only know a couple although I always listen to his songs and exclaim that I will learn it the next day.

edit- Who's that in your avatar Badmoon?
