 Thats the American way to attend college...do everything half assed.

Kage 08-22-2007 10:14 PM

I've got pretty good classes actually. Two film classes, a German class, a philosophy class and the only bad part is a calculus class.

superpeer 08-22-2007 10:17 PM

Hehe, 24 hour drive.

Driving three hours in any direction would get you out of the country here, maybe even two hours!
I've got pretty good classes actually. Two film classes, a German class, a philosophy class and the only bad part is a calculus class.
Thats not bad. My semester sucks.

Accounting 101
Calc
Statistics
BCIS (A Business and Cmputer Class)
Micro Economics 2

Not really looking forward to the Stats and Calc but thats the only way I can take a Finance class for the spring semester, just in time to make sure that is what I want to do before I officially declare my major in May.

Txus 08-22-2007 10:20 PM

I ****ing hate Calc :(

I'm going to law school next year :)

Kage 08-22-2007 10:21 PM

It takes over twelve hours to drive out of Texas here, lol.

GI, are you thinking about Business or something?

Anglachel 08-22-2007 10:22 PM

Aside from school for a moment, does mediafire still have that "temporary" 100 MB limit?

GenuineImitation 08-22-2007 10:23 PM
It takes over twelve hours to drive out of Texas here, lol.

Yeah sort of. Im thinking about a Finance major and then go to Law School for Corporate Law. Or maybe just get my MBA in Finance. I still have another 2 years to think about that though.

Whats your intended major?

Kage 08-22-2007 10:24 PM

Film production, 100%. It's the reason I came out to California. This school has incredible film facilities, it's great.

GenuineImitation 08-22-2007 10:25 PM

Most of my friends are film majors. It seems like a very interesting field.

Oh, I forgot to ask. How is your roomate (and possible suitemates if you are in a suite)?

Kage 08-22-2007 10:26 PM

It kinda sucks, they're putting three people in a room this year for freshmen. It's a good sized room and all. My roomates are pretty cool, though.

Playboy is full of average looking women though so who gives a **** what they think.
It kinda sucks, they're putting three people in a room this year for freshmen. It's a good sized room and all. My roomates are pretty cool, though.
That isnt the best situation. How big is the room?

Also, do they like good music/are open to hearing new things or are they like my roomate and friend who listens to LL Cool J and the Top Gun Soundtrack and thinks everything else is shit.

Kage 08-22-2007 10:29 PM

We don't exactly have similar tastes in music, but it's alright. I generally just wear headphones to listen to music and stuff.

They're easy to get along with so far, but we'll see how it is in a couple months.

GenuineImitation 08-22-2007 10:31 PM

Im sure you wont have any problems...unless one of them turns out to be like my friends roomate. He got drunk and pissed on his effect pedals and tube amp. I dont think you'll have to worry about that though. Most people arent that much of an asshole.

Kage 08-22-2007 10:33 PM

That really sucks, lol. I really don't have a problem with them right now, so I lucked out.

Actually we're the only guys in this entire section of the dorm.

GenuineImitation 08-22-2007 10:35 PM

Thats a plus when it comes to the ladies. Although you'll wind up just being friends with the vast majority of them, but thats cool to.

Anyway, Im off to bed. Later Kage and have fun at school.

superpeer 08-22-2007 10:35 PM

Kage: Why would you have to follow German and Calculus if you're doing film studies? That makes no sense whatsoever. All of a sudden the Americans want to learn languages? >=[
You shouldn't be afriad to talk to your neighbors and kids in your classes, you'll make good friends that way. Don't bother talking to people at parties though, people you meet once aren't worth the effort.

I'm with Genuine Imitation on this one. I was at a party a couple of months ago so I started talking to this guy. Now we're really good friends and I'm friends with a bunch of people who he introduced me to (he's part of a frat (he's not a douche at all though :))).

They have General Education requirements in addition to my major classes. I already have credit for english and history, but I still need to take a math class, and they require a foreign language. I would take German anyway because I really like learning it and I want to be fluent in it one day.

EDiT: But actually in general, yeah, they're pushing foreign languages these days more and more in high schools and colleges. I had to ahve 3 years of a foreign language to graduate high school.

Same with me man. I'm the same as you, if I get too drunk or stoned I get really depressed...I still love getting "mildely" stoned tho hehe.

Anglachel 08-22-2007 10:44 PM

Thats funny, because high schools here only require one credit in French and none in any other foreign language

EDIT: Nothing to make you depressed like a depressant

You're better off making high school more general and specialising when you're in uni. That would make a lot more sense.

Good. But there's still much to learn. Pronunciation, for one! Although, I think German is a bit strange, with you living so far away from the countries that use it.

Tyler 08-22-2007 10:46 PM
Thats funny, because high schools here only require one credit in French and none in any other foreign language
Most French teachers in the TDSB don't do the language any favours. The further I got in the French Program (I was in immersion, meaning I didn't even take English until grade 4) the more I hated the language and less fluently I spoke it.

I had I think 8 French credits when I said "**** it". You need something like 12 to get the French diploma.

Kage 08-22-2007 10:46 PM

Oh, college is much more specialized. But it's good to be well-rounded, and I want to take some history and stuff. But I'll be taking mostly film classes starting next semester.

Anglachel 08-22-2007 10:49 PM

I havent been able to learn French of any sort from any of my teachers, except basic, nub words.

I know what French Immersion is, my NB cousins are all in it.

superpeer 08-22-2007 10:49 PM

See, this is what I dislike about a lot of education systems in other countries. It's too easy to drop things.

We had to pick an orientation, let's call it and within that direction/orientation, we had a set packet of subjects, ranging all over the place and there's little opportunity to drop things.

I mean, you can't learn a language in a year or two year or even three years. Both English and French are obligatory here, next to Dutch. and it spans over several years, so that you can actually use the language, there's not much point otherwise. :\
But it's good to be well-rounded
But we come out of high school well rounded. ^-^
I havent been able to learn French of any sort from any of my teachers, ever.

see it's a shame =(

Although, I hear from friends who are still in high school that are language teachers are getting much lazier and more incompetent. But in my time, I really learned something from most of them.

But yeah, I'm letting my French die, because I don't use it. That's a shame too.

All the English kids did in their core french classes, from what I saw, was study verbs. They didn't learn anything, they just memorized how to conjugate avoir + etre.

Wow, I'm ignorant. I didn't even know alcohol was a depressent :/. I'm not really into alcohol that much. I've only been drunk like 5 times.

Tyler 08-22-2007 10:52 PM

I get drunk sometimes but I really only like to drink so I get a bit of a buzz and lose some of my nerves/anxiety. Of course, as that happens I tend to overdo it.

Thats all I've been supposed to learn from grade 6 'til 9. Only my 9th grade teacher didn't half-ass his job. The class was still a little too used to thinking French was a free period for me to learn anything though.

That sounds like a lot of years. And you don't speak it? :\

All my French classes were entirely in French and all the English ones completely in English, so you had to understand the language, or you couldn't follow whatsoever.

But I hear that happens less and less. Which is really stupid. It's the best way to learn.

Tyler 08-22-2007 11:01 PM

The problem with French for me is most of the teachers were very bland and uninteresting.

They couldn't find a way to actually make the class interested in the language, so the only ones who actually excelled were ones who studied 4 hours a night. Asians, basically.

I can still speak basic french but I understand it pretty well. It sucks, I would have loved to continue with the language but the way it was handled put me in a position where if I were stay in the program I'd get the French diploma but with horrible marks, and I'd probably have a poor understanding of it anyways.

Anglachel 08-22-2007 11:03 PM

Oh, and another thing, our classes were never about speaking french, it was about reading and writing it.

Belgian variant of Dutch.

Ours were entirely in French too, they were just boring as hell. I just skipped a lot, scraped by and yeah. The only teacher I had that was any good failed me on everything because he "didn't like my attitude".

One time we had this group project. I did 95% of the work, and yet when we got our marks back 2/3 of the group got 80s, yet I had a separate mark (it was supposed to be a group mark) and I got a 40.
