its somewhat weird thinking about how big the Stones are. like some people consider them the greatest band of all time, but think about it...

early to mid sixties mod era: the Who, and the Beatles, were better than the Stones

later sixties psychadelic era: tons of bands were better than the Stones

seventies arena rock: Zeppelin, Floyd, The Who, countless bands were bigger than the Stones

eighties: they still put out albums, and toured a lot, but really didn't do anything too amazing.

90's to now: still nothing that was too great.

i think they are so famous, just because they have been touring and putting out albums for so long, they never really went away. there has always been better bands than them.
They also were part of the first wave of the British Invension. I think they are so big because they were the bad boys of music during those days. Today they seem tame, but back then, they were outrages, probably the Eminem of that period.

(I never thought I would put the Rolling Stones and Eminem on the same sentence... )

Illmatic 01-01-2005 09:27 PM

Plus, they kept rock alive after the disaster at Altamont, the Beatles' breakup, and the deaths of Hendrix and Morrison.

Oh, and their best material (Sticky Fingers, Let It Bleed, Beggars' Banquet, Exile on Main Street) is fantastic.

thickasabrick 01-01-2005 09:29 PM

ya thats true. they were known more for their personalities than other bands at the time. they were so much more raw and sexual, than say...the beatles.

i'm sure you all know this, but in American Pie, Don Mclean refered to Mick Jagger as the devil. He hated Mick Jagger so much.

slowhand 01-01-2005 09:31 PM

I have a friend who hates the Stones just because of Mick Jagger... actually, because of how Jagger performs... weird.

But I'm slowly getting him into the Stones. 'Sympathy for the Devil' and 'Paint it Black' are very tempting.

thickasabrick 01-01-2005 09:35 PM

ya actually my favourites are Sympathy for the Devil, and Paint it Black. but i also love You Can't Always Get What You Want.

Woodstock 01-01-2005 10:01 PM

Wild Horses is one of their best.

slowhand 01-01-2005 10:03 PM

Well, I like a lot of songs by them, but those are the ones that my friend actually tolerates.

thickasabrick 01-01-2005 10:03 PM

i've got an off topic question, i'd ask elsewhere, but i know you guys the best so i like talking to you.

is it bad to use alcohol and marijuana at the same time? i was telling my friend about last night, and i mentioned i smoked some weed, and then drank some vodka..and he's like "mixing alcohol and weed is how you die, it's so bad for you."

i had never heard that before, is what he's telling me fact or fiction?

and once again, sorry for the spam.

The Best Classic Rock Bands

The Who

The Beatles

Bowie

The Doors

Zeppelin

Stones

AC/DC ( in a way cuz their albums came out in the 70s)

Clapton's bands
Thats all i can think of

slowhand 01-01-2005 10:07 PM

I don't think it would kill you, but it would leave you in a very f.ucked up state later on.

Unless you plan on over-drinking-and-smoking it won't kill you.

thickasabrick 01-01-2005 10:08 PM

well actually HendrixPage, that's just your opinion. you can't state "The Best" bands straight out like that, unless the whole world agreed with you. and i for one do not agree with you.

and Bowie is a guy, not a band.

oh ok. i used to drink all the time, and i've never been hung over. today was the first time i have been hung over, and i was wondering why, and then my friend told me that, and i was like "uh oh, maybe im dying".

thanks.

When he says "the best", he obviously means "the best in my opinion". If he says it, it's his opinion. I assumed we all knew that, and that you weren't one of the people who is confused unless someone puts "IMO" in their post.

Illmatic 01-02-2005 12:54 AM
Wild Horses is one of their best.
123. That whole album is fantastic.

Rasta Rocker 01-02-2005 12:57 AM

my friend told me about drinking and smoking weed at the same time. hes still a genius in school. it cant be too good for you. go ahead and try it, but i wouldnt do it too much. you dont want to smoke and drink yourself retarded

Rasta Rocker 01-02-2005 12:58 AM

whats 123

jpj 01-02-2005 01:07 AM

When someone say "123" it means they agree.

Seafroggys 01-02-2005 01:20 AM

Rolling Stones are okay. My parents saw them about 7 years ago (wow....its been that long?)

I like the riff in Satisfaction, and Paint it Black's a pretty **** cool song too.

I feel like a noob for knowing only their hits.

No offense but your friend is a dumbass. You will not die from mixing alcohol and weed. It will only result in you getting real ****ed up and feeling retarded the next day.

On a side note, classic rock is the **** and it's the main type of music I listen to.

Edit: I was censored! BASTARDS! This is the first forum I've been on that does that.

Take a break Rock. Stop wasting space.

Kingadamx 01-02-2005 10:25 AM

Exile on Main Street is just flawless imo. I actually happen to like most of their albums. The people who only know the Stone's hits are really missing out on a lot of good material, I happen to not like their singles nearly as much as some of their most classic albums on the whole such as Let it Bleed, Sticky Fingers, or Beggar's Banquet.

I say:

"lead zeppeloin"
"miez"
"Classic", not "classical" even if i'm using n00b talk.
"jimmy hendrix"

In the user title it say "I is rock not roll" but I say "I r teh rock not roll".

Good try.

Well, using the word "better" can't really describe a bands success. The other bands listed may have been better then the Stones but the Stones were probably bigger. Especially in the late Sixties. The only band that was bigger then them was the Beatles and at times the Doors. Also in the 80's they were still releasing fairly good material while most of the bands from the 60's were gone.
i dunno, it's a cool pic but i think you've probably got the best avatar around right now.
AHEM.

:p

Yea I enjoy Paint It Black and a few of their other riffs, but other than that the Stones aren't very big in my book. Their music is kind of plain to me. They have been around for a while though, I'll give em that.
