EMGs wouldn't fit, I don't know if SD makes anything that would cover 7-string, and I didn't want to pay for new pickups and a new preamp (as I'm sure that was also to fault).
You had a GTBD-7. Why don't you play it anymore? |
6 string EMGs should fit it. I know someone who has a aset of EMGs in his 7 string, and that has the same string spacing as my bass does. And I stole those measurements off my GTBD-7. Might need a little routing though as the Barts are pretty narrow IIRC.
And I don't play it because I sold it. I can't even remember why I sold it. I bought a USA Conklin about 6 months ago though as a backup. But I don't get along with it compared to my Shuker. So I'm going to sell that and put the money towards a second Shuker 7 sometime soon. BUT the Conklin I have at the moment has some fat sounding SDs in it, which is why I suggested them. Not aggressive with the preamp which is in it (I'm not sure what it is), but phat. |

Not aggressive with the preamp which is in it (I'm not sure what it is), but phat.
Yeah, the Barts were way narrow. The Conklin is a quality bass, but I just don't play it, and something about the 34" scale made the strings feel floppy all the time. I'd rather save the upgrade money for PA equipment of effects than take the time to upgrade and mod that bass. I have my 8- for any extended range stuff I need. Plus, I'm already upgrading the pickups in my Schecter (EMG DC/CS in the bridge/neck), putting an OBP-3 in my 8-string, and an Audere Z3 in my jazz. Then I need to have 4 of my basses set up (my tech does it just right, it's amazing). Hopefully, if I sell my Aria, I can pay for all of that with it. |
You want an aggressive sound, but you're getting an OBP-3? That doesn't stack up to me.
For aggression, I think aggressive pickups with a passive EQ, into an aggressive preamp is the only way you can go. My plans for tonal domination on the next bass uses that principle - Jon Shuker's JJ Burnel signature electronics (passive) and an active/passive switch so I can use an ACG filter preamp if I need more variation (check them out - they look absolutely AMAZING). I hear you on the 34" scale thing. But if it was a 35, then the high strings would have too much tension. I was always scared of bending those strings incase they snapped as it is! I'm still the same on my Shuker actually. I may go for fanned frets on the next bass. But I NEED to try a fanned fret instrument out first to see if I gel with it. 36-32" fan would be my ideal. |

I've been bouncing between that and an EMG 3-band for a while now, still not sure about ordering. I'll have to check out that pre for sure. You use a rather heavy F, so I'd be scared to bend it too. I hear ya with the fanned frets thing - I wanted a 36"-32" myself for the added low B tension. Ben says it feels totally natural, but I'm still worried I wont like it. I really hope I end up getting an upright for $200. That would be sick. |
I've used anywhere between a 25 and a 20 for my F, and I've never felt comfortable bending it more than a semitone. Even that's pushing it :p Good thing I think bends soud ridiculous for the most part.
The ACG filter pre basically seems like it can make your bass sound like anything you want it to. Its not like a normal pre. Huge tonal variety. Would make a perfect recording tool I reckon. But I don't get the impression it does that down and dirty aggression too well. Which is why I'd still want that JJ circuit. I'm just worried it'll make some chord shapes unplayable, or the low notes on the low strings hard to reach. Everyone who plays fanned frets raves about them it seems, but the jury is still out for me. They're just rare enough that I can't seem to find one to try :( If you can find an upright for that price, that's a bargain! Can't say it interests me as an instrument though :/ |
Wow, the new ad for the internet dating site on MX is terrible. "You won't meet people trolling bars and supermarkets... SIGN UP NOW!"
I don't need to have studied marketing to make something better than that. But I suppose uninspired bullshit is a staple internet characteristic. |

If I can find one for that price, and then pay $200 to have strings and a setup, I may just try to take some upright lessons. At the very least, I could sell it for $500-$600 and just make a small profit off of it. |
ACG = $300+, Holy bajeezus.
That sound clip is sweet though. |
way I see it is that you only need one bass you like the feel of.. maybe one for a backup. and with that preamp in it, you'll never need to worry about different basses for different sounds. So you don't need as many basses. then $300 doesn't seem so much.
|
That's a good point. I wonder how that would sound with EMGs. I might consider throwing it into my Schecter and moving that pre- over into my 8-string.
|
I'm not quite sure whether it would sound better with pickups with their own character, or something almost completely trasparent, like Q-Tuners.
|
I have 5 basses, I use 1 to play and 1 to practise and as a backup. The other 3 have purposes, just not practical. I'm secretly waiting until I can find someone to buy my 6 string and put that money towards an amp. My musician will leave in it's case forevermore.
|
That ACG looks quite interesting. I'd definitely take a while to get used to it I think, I've gotten used to a straight bass/mids/treble EQ on my bass, I've been looking at replacing the Bartolini MK-1 EQ in it but I'm not sure if I really want to 'cause I am happy with the sound but I like to daydream of buying things. I was thinking of putting an Aguilar OBP-3 in it but I already have an Aguilar head and I'm not sure if that would give my sound too much of an Aguilar colouring, or if that would even be a bad thing.

What 6-string are you selling? |
What 6-string are you selling?
I wouldn't go so far as to say "selling" but, would sell, would be technically more accurate. |
Looks in fair nick, should find a buyer if you advertised enough I'd say.
|
Ah yes, the Cort Curbow 6. Almost bought one of those years ago.
|
I have my eye on a Cort acoustic fretless if it passes a play test from me sometime.
http://www.cortguitars.com/english/products/acoustics/view.asp?product_id=201 |
I got it used for 700, from a shop. About 6 months later I picked up an 82 fretless Ibanez Musician for 800. Luck comes my way.
My current Jazz has been customised with metallic black paint, Dimarrzio's, extra thin frets, matching headstock on a P bass neck. Or near enough to a P neck, sure as hell ain't no J neck. Got it for $400. |

http://www.cortguitars.com/english/products/acoustics/view.asp?product_id=201
I've been wanting an acoustic for a while... Cort acoustics are good. But I need a new amp more, and a want a motorbike. The two basses I would sell are worth sweet FA, the Cort I would consider for the right price. No way I'd lose my musician or jazz. |
Ideally I want a Cort Artisan A4. I have a fretless and a nice jazz that suits me, I just want a nice bass to headline the collection. I'm ****ing off my amp and getting a better/bigger one ASAP, I have shows soon.
But acoustic + bike are so tempting. |
I'm still debating selling my '96 MIM Jazz. I mean, I could get $400 out of it, but she's got sentimental value.
I just hate the sound and feel of it. |
Got a pic of that Ibanez Musician?
|
Sentimental value counts for fuck all for me when it comes to gear.

I can't really translate? Is that Good or Bad? It was my late uncle's bass, and he's pretty much the reason I ever got into music. I then proceeded to win a bass competition using his bass, and the best bass solo I ever improvised was in a Jazz band competition in front of a huge audience and some judges. |
I want one of those Agile Septor 7-string guitars. They look sweet. And for only $300...

I'm tempted to buy a nice electric guitar but I got this pretty sweet PRS for really cheap so I can't justify it for what I do with it.

PRS? **drools** By far my favorite guitar brand. Got any pics? |
I don't like that quilted maple/trans red combo. Nice looking axe though. I'd prefer a Caparison.
And as for sentimentality... I just think if something's not playable enough for me, why should I keep it? Dead money. But I know not everyone thinks like that. |

It's the potential regret and afterthought at a later date that I'm trying to avoid. I don't need to sell it to survive, so it's not a big deal right now, but I'm trying to condense the amount of gear I have and get some more money in the bank for upgrades, effects, or just for gaining interest. |
Work more hours.
I'll expand on that - since starting this job, i've put aside 75-100 pounds a week from my wages towards gear. Solely because I've been working overtime. My main gigging rig (what comes with me to gigs) is currently worth over £4k RRP in the state it is in, and within a few months, I'll have upped it to around £5.5k More hours = more money = not letting go of old but emotionally important items ^_^ |

I work 50+ a week, so working more wouldn't bother me at all. It's mostly just condensing my gear and going for quality over quantity.

It's play really smoothly, has a lovely clean sound. I don't tend to use many effects if any on guitar. I don't actually own a guitar amp but I've played it through my bass stuff. I'd love to get a tiny but good Vox amp to play it through. Most of my days are spent playing it unplugged, I've come to love the sound of it by itself. One day I might have snazzier pick-ups but in or something, but I'd really happy with it anyway.
Upper fret accessibility is flawless. And I think to myself, crap man, this is the CHEAP one they make. Imagine playing one of their deluxe models. Wow. |

The Al Di Meola sig looks sweet.
I have to buy this baby some new strings, the set on it are old and there's one missing. I don't know what are nice strings for clean jazzy sounds on electric guitar though. |

Light top, HEAVY bottow. I believe they are 9 - 50, but could be 9 - 54. |
BTW funky, if you'd like, I can put your Cort on Talkbass and just direct everybody through you. There are bound to be fellow Aussies on there.
