The bass solo on 5:15 on that
 Yep. Good bass tone too. |
<-----------------:D
thanks for the support, Lunch..... ......and since we are on the subject can someone explain to me what John did with his bass sound in the later years of The Who? i've read he changed his sound or switched from the all wood bass to a more refined/manufactured one and this affected his sound/tone adversely. less thunder and boom and more, well, refinement? i hear it, too. he doesn't seem to be as loud, and even when so not as powerful. he was an excellent musician but is it possible he may have "lost a step" due to his partying or is this simply something he thought was more becoming of a bass player of his skill. i really have no idea? |
that is.....by far the best avatar of all time.
I think John was experiementing with sound ideas, personally. |
that avatar is pretty sweet
|
Possibly his hearing concerns encouraged a change? I don't really know.
|
hmm... i didn't know john had hearing concerns. pete, yeah, and i know he made some changes on account. then i figured maybe john made some changes for pete, but i doubt his bass sound would affect pete onstage. i'll have to dig up some info, perhaps...
that avatar is pretty sweet
yeah i like it. and i gave up a great one for it. such is my love of The Who :D |
I remember reading a story once about a joint interview with Pete and John, when Pete was asked about his hearing problems. John didn't even hear the question.
|
sounds like dry john humor not hearing the question..
atleast as i have gotten to learn of his instructional and "A ox's tale" DVD's... or his comments on "Live at the royal albert hall" for that mather. "i wish i got a couple thousands of pounds each time i introduced this song... OH! I have! haha! MY WIFE!" |
hahaha that's hilarious! When did he say that?
|
read the description :p
Right before "My wife" on "Live at the Royal albert hall" (his last who concert ever..) its such a shame he became such big inspiration and mentor to me after his death, i would have loved to see the man live, he died way to young. ah well, atleast he went out in true rock'n'roll style. |
I thought the Live at the Albert Hall was their 2000 concert, not the 2002 concert.
|
I thought it was common knowledge that Entwistle had been pretty deaf for long time.
I remember someone talking about how John was on some UK TV "comedy quiz show" (?) long ago and couldn't almost hear any of the quuestions... |
Pete was the one that's famous for being deaf, not John.
I've heard of Roger having some hearing problems, but never John having any. |
huh, thats true, he died in june and the 2002 one was in february.
i dunno where i have gotten that the 2000 one was his last? oh well, anyway pieces of his last concert is on the LIve at royal albert hall CD, as the 3rd "bonus" disc is from 2002.
Townshend said late bandmate John Entwistle also suffered hearing problems, causing him to play out of time at a Who concert in 2000
Jupp. |
Pete was the one that's famous for being deaf, not John.
Pete is partially deaf and suffers from tinnitus. :chug: |
yeah i guess you don't play in a band like The Who and come out with perfect hearing. guess John had the bad hearing as well. and roger must to some extant. small price to pay at the end, i suppose. but i know with pete it caused some pain, so that was unfortunate. and of course the tinnitus. pete has said recently that his hearing problems were somewhat exaggerated, though. even by him. or at least as of late, as he said he was pretty stable now and not deaf or threatening to go deaf.
still it did cause him to give up electric guitar in live performance for awhile and even now he only plays the Eric Clapton Signature Strat onstage, so thats pretty serious if you ask me. sure wish he could pick up that old SG or Les Paul for a go or two.... and.....i wanted to post these for Lunch...from the 1976 Oakland gig with the Dead...grabbed them from pete's site....and the last is a recent shot from a magazine. just funny, really. typical acerbic pete...
No, it wasn't case of humour... |

good morning, wanderer. do you post at thewhotour.com? if so what is your username? i posted there a little, but haven't for awhile. also for Lunch, in case you missed these at the bottom of the previous page.... .....from the 1976 Oakland gig with the Dead...grabbed them from pete's site....and the last is a recent shot from a magazine. just funny, really. typical acerbic pete... Wow, great pictures, thanks for those JXD.
I can't imagine what a conversation between Pete and Jerry would be like. I have the Dead show from 10/9/1976, the first of the Oakland shows with the Who. Talk about a dream concert for me... |
I don't even want to take a stab at it.
|
i imagine jerry is trying to get pete to loosen up and pete is probably going on about troubles in the world and punk rock coming and "it" being all over. jerry is like "c'mon man, loosen up. have a shroom cap. life is good, man" and pete is like "i gotta stop drinking and write me another mini opera." and jerry's like " :smoke:"
|
Actually, that sounds about right.
|
Haha, I was thinking along the same lines.
|
I agree.....for the last concert of this tour, Pete needs to whip out the SG.
|
Pete is pretty happy with his Fender guitars and amp. And I would be too. Fender Strats>Sgs
|
im planning on seeing these guys in DC *crosses fingers*
|
Pete is pretty happy with his Fender guitars and amp. And I would be too. Fender Strats>Sgs
blasphemy! At least play a regular Strat, and not some other guitarists signature model :P Naw SGs sound much better anyway. |
No, I don't post at thewhotour.com.
Pete's strat/"current amp" sound is the worst sound he has ever had. It's terrible. Also the man should be banned from using whammybar... I understand that one (both) Oakland show was filmed. I remember that there has been some talk about it... ? Also, Pete indeed played 'No Face, No Name, No Number' last weekend during Jim Capaldi tribute show. Pete Townshend - 1979 Secret Policeman's Ball Drowned http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2t9slqL_eSw |
haha yeah he's not too good with the whammy bar....overuses it like hell.
|
Maybe it doesn't sound as good for his overdrive but his clean tone is much better. I'd rather have bad overdrive than bad clean tone if I was playing what they do. Lets face it, Marshall + SG sucks for clean in comparison but a Fender guitar and amp are fantastic.

New Pete interview. Good read. |
Nice link. Good pictures in that article.
|
yeah that was really well done. enjoyed it a lot.
|
Learning French.
Priceless  |
Haha yeah. Pete's always a comedian.
I like how honest he is answering the questions though. It's nice to see someone who's not afraid to be honest. Pete's honesty has gotten him in trouble before, because he never really knows when to shutup, but it means that his interviews are always entertaining, and here he's really honest and insightful without saying anything jerky and stupid. I like the stuff he said about Mehmet Baba a lot. And about being unhappy when The Who were at their peak. And about the current Who being different, not better or worse. And just about everything else he said. |
Hey guys, want to see my great Keith Moon imitation?

http://www.soundclick.com/util/getplayer.m3u?id=4919919&q=hi
wow that was quite excellent. you nail it. i think that is my fave part of the song. i wish all the Who's drummers played it just like that on stage. something about it is just perfect for that segment of the song. its as if Moon understood he was to add to the suspense before Daltrey kicked in, not end the suspense with some big showy solo....i wonder if pete came up with that, though? i've never heard a demo for WGFA so i don't know....
Pete playing at Jim Capaldi tribute show http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YC4YovsKR18
thanks wanderer. nice performance. i also like when pete basically calls the heckler in the audience a cun.t. good 'ol pete....cracks me up.... |
I actually like what Zak does for that solo (and his is technically harder) but I know what you mean....Keith's version is ace in that it builds into the scream, rather than being a wankfest.
