With regards to placement, your tom-toms should descend in pitch from left to right. There are a good many great drummers who switch some of their toms around to make playing them more difficult or for aesthetics or whatever. In all seriousness, the drum kit is a hard enough instrument already and if you need to find ways of making it more difficult then you need to stop and reflect as to why you are playing in the first place.

By that reasoning one could restring a piano so when you play an ascending glissando it actually plays a nursery rhyme.
Umm, restringing a piano so it played a nursery rhyme when you ascended would made it easier, not harder. Try another example plz. |

Umm, tell Bernard Purdie how to play drums plz Toms =/= exclusively used for descending rolls.
Watch Billy Ward's Big Time. It says exactly the same thing. I am merely in agreeance. Now that is really stupid. So if they were ascending left to right, then the toms would be exclusively for ascending rolls? Because a piano ascends from left to right, all you can play is ascending licks? Nice reasoning there.. |
do us a favor and post somewhere else

  I like rack toms in reverse order. More comfortable placement above bass drum. I don't understand how that makes it more difficult. Please give a valid example. |
THE MITES you are just digging yourself a hole trying to be the overlord.

Do us a favour and contribute some actual intellectual discussion to the forums as opposed to being so immature as to try and attack me by lowering my reputation score at every turn for personal reasons. Do you really think I care? Does it affect my life in the slightest if I don't have lots of little green squares? No. Grow up son. |
A good many thoughts and ideas about drumming that make perfect sense. That's why it's so good. It focuses on actually playing the drums rather than pushing double bass double strokes to 16ths at 250bpm or playing 9 over 5 over 7. Like.. who cares?
Fo sho. I have his Inside Out book. Just wondering what specific topics he covers in it. I'm assuming ergonomic set-up would be one of them....? |
his name is jizzin, gimp

Yeah George, plz share wisdom, like this.
With regards to placement, your tom-toms should descend in pitch from left to right. Why do I spend time playing drums, when my toms do not descend in pitch? It just doesn't make sense. Why do something I enjoy in a comfortable matter, if the pitches do not descend? /srs moment |
THE MITES you are just digging yourself a hole trying to be the overlord.
I am not trying to be the "overlord". This is an online community, not a heirarchy. I have the right to express my opinion. It's called freedom of speech. I don't care if i'm offending some. The point is i'm getting a few people thinking. That's the point of the forum as far as i'm concerned. The worst mentality is jumping on the bandwagon and agreeing religiously with the opinions of members with a good reputation or high post count or mod status or whatever. I know this forum has a first class history of exhibiting this exact mentality. In fact that's the story behind my user name: The Mites. Even DBJ, the moderator from near the beginning of this forum's conception, was caught blindly bandwagoning, even over something so ridiculous it is hard to percieve how he would have let that slip by his own reasoning. It was just stupid. |
I already have people rejecting my logic. Guess it wasn't so obvious to them. Just because people see it as blisteringly obvious when written down, doesn't mean the apply these logical tidbits to their practice/playing.
I have much more writing to come, with regards to many more aspects of drumming. This is just a start.
ok. |
