Not grind. Great job writing this but you contradicted yourself. You said that grindcore didnt follow conventional structure, yet dillinger escape plan is one of the most technical bands ive ever heard. Never heard mathcore being known as grind... D E P doesnt have any blast beats, they dont have 30 second songs, its not all distorted. There is no growls or high pitched shrieks, and D E P does have intelligble lyrics, therefore there is no reason for D E P to be called grind. :)
Eh, it's kind of hard to say. Technical is sometimes associated with grind because the instruments work together very technically I believe? |
could u guys even try to define afi, like the last 3 albums..

Pop-punk. And you're not supposed to talk about them here. Go to the pop-punk forum. |

Its wierd, its kind of oxymoronic, they have technicallity, but they are simple... Hard to explain. |
Chaos, yes. The emotion which is the main characteristic of screamo, no.
I see, that means "The number twelve looks like you" is what then? not emotional, but it has the chaoticness, Im lost at what genre they are... |
Can't really say. I don't really like them. Probably tech, if I remember correctly.
|
My friend is thinking of booking them for a show he's doing in his basement.

who the number 12 looks like you? do it |
Yeah, he's starting to call some of the bands within the week.
|
the number twelve rules. saw them twice, great stuff.
dillinger escape plan classify themselves as grindcore. |
Awesome, too bad the word hardcore or screamo dont mean anything to people in Hawaii. Except for like 5 people.
|
the number twelve rules. saw them twice, great stuff.

i don't think of them as grind either, but they classify themselves at that
|
i don't think of them as grind either, but they classify themselves at that
wierd, I would think they would be their own genre, or like tech metalcore or something. |

Compare DEP to every genre, grindcore is the genre they are closest to. I'm mean I've heard the term mathcore thrown around with them but it doesn't seem to be sticking. So instead of creating a whole new genre just for them I would say they are.

I guess, but thats not a good reason. Their needs to be a genre for chaotic stuff thats not emotional. Like screamo without the emo. |
Hahah, the reason why I would use mathcore because math can get technical, much like their guitar work and core.....well I don't see why not.

ok from this moment forward MATHCORE is a new genre  |
Mathmetal*
I dislike all the cores and DEP don't even incorporate hardcore in their music... |

Screamo without the emo is grind. Screamo= Grind with underlying sense of art and beauty/Grind with breakdowns. |

yeah but dillinger isnt really the screamo or grind sound |
Dillinger definitely has some grind in there. Math Metal/Grindcore just about sums it up I think. Maybe some metal thrown in there.
|
Ok, this is something that's been annoying me. DEP aren't grind. Grind is pure chaos. Daughters is grind. DEP are way too technical and have too much thought in their music. They're technical metal, or tech for short.
|
They definitely have a grind influence though.
|
Yes.

i always here people on other boards saying that the locust and daughters are not grind. i don't know much about grind, so i don't know. and yeah, DEP are definately not a grind band. |
Daughters and The Locust are grind.
|
I'm a newbie to the board. But definetely not a newbie to these genres of music.
Dillinger Escape Plan is mathmetal The very first post of this thread addresses some bands that I feel were not classified properly. The first of those is Norma Jean. Their is no technicality to their riffs, so why you even classify them as metal. You yourself said metal had much more technical riffs. Norma Jean is hardcore. They use open and minor 7ths constantly. Another band that I feel was mis-classified was everytime I die. They have spastic riffs that a much more fitting in hardcore not metalcore. There is no real metal to them at all. Same goes for Scarlet. I've seen all three of those bands live. Same goes for Nora. As for metalcore, they are easy to spot. Unearth, As I Lay Dying, Hatebreed(the supposed "creators") Underoath was not metalcore. The best description I've heard for them and that I use for myself is pop metal. After listening to their new cd they definetely fell into the post hardcore category. Where Atreyu would also feel much more at home. Thirty-Called Arson would almost go along with Dillinger in the math metal category if they weren't lacking so much in talent when compared to dillinger. They are easily described as spazcore. I haven't seen anything about the band Zao. It's probably crammed somewhere in the middle. But how can you talk about metal and hardcore and not even mention Zao. They're metalcore. Also, no one said anything about Poison the Well. I'm amazed that neither one of them were mentioned. Poison the Well came about when hardcore just started to get big(1997). That's all I've got for now. Sorry to be a critic. |
