Weve had a lot of discussions about the metallica songs lately and the complexity of different ones. But wut is rly interesting and shows their creativity are the 3 instrumentals: The Call Of Ktulu (RTL), Orion (MOP), and To Live is to Die (AJFA).

So heres my question, which one of these three songs are your favorite and why?? Mine is To Live is To Die becuz of the huge diversity it has from classical, to metal, to 1st position melodic chords (the interlude part with the violin sythesizers). So wuts everyone els' fave Metallica instrumental?

FlyingPaul_83 07-23-2005 07:25 PM

To live is to die because of what you said :p

heavy metal kid 07-23-2005 07:26 PM

Orion,it's just a great masterpiece, the solo's are incredible and the duration of the song it's perfect, you can hear the melodic complex of Burton and the rage sounding guitars of hetfield and hammett.

kill_em_all 07-23-2005 09:41 PM

my favorite is To live is to die
the acoustic intro is smart, its heavy , i love the toggle flicking in the solo, and it has a cool name

fatbandit 07-24-2005 03:43 AM

Call of Ktulu. If only someone had the S&M version sans orchestra, I would love them.

That song is just indescribably good. I used to prefer Orion, but Ktulu is far far more kickarse.

:smash:

Mr. Black 07-24-2005 03:46 AM

I'd say call of ktulu cos i havent herd th others

DisposableHeroes 07-24-2005 03:52 AM

To Live Is To Die, because it has some beautiful guitar parts and solos. And in a sense its Cliff's last recorded output

Bazarov 07-24-2005 03:58 AM

Actually yeah, I love Call of the Ktulu, it's a tough match though with Orion though.

Drugstep 07-24-2005 04:11 AM

They're all brillitant to me. I couldn't pick one.

exup 07-24-2005 04:20 AM

To live is to die, i like the end..i really thought "hmm where heard i this before" , haha it was 9 minutes ago :P
Name about any Metallica song and I'm sure it has a memorable riff. There are good riffs for average songs, like Enter Sandman, and there are amazing riffs for amazing songs like Seek and Destroy.

AJFA

-Blackened: Probably the coolest intro for a Metallica song that lasts like 30 seconds. Awesome song with great thrash riffs and vocals
-...And Justice For All: Incredibly long song, but filled with great riffs (including a great intro) and awesome vocals
-Eye of the Beholder: Probably my least favorite on the album.
-One: There aren't words to describe the kickassness of this song.
-The Shortest Straw: Once again, far from my favorite, but it's a good song.
-The Frayed ends of Sanity: Great stuff, but the one after this is so much better
-To Live is To Die:Incredible "instrumental" that was written in memory of Cliff Burton. You need to hear this song.
-Dyers Eve: Easliy Lars' best drumming

KEA

You will have heard Seek and Destroy and possibly the Four Horsemen. The rest of the cd is incredibly thrashy with hardcore soloing. It's a great album (i don't feel like reviewing every song)

I have that one too, so what am I uploading for people?

edit: and for the memorable riffs, in a few minutes I'll post my absolute favorite Metallica riffs (again)
Harvester of sorrow is a AJFA song too right?
Really like that intro too, nice drumming again

Beginner 07-24-2005 04:42 AM

I love, Battery, Unnamed Feeling, One, Blackened, Master of Puppets, Holier than Thou. The list goes on, but Battery is a reallly awesome song. Im sick of all those people complaining about St Anger that was a fruckin awesome album. Frantic and St Anger are really awesome songs

Burdcheese 07-24-2005 05:58 AM

Aye - it is

Jev 07-24-2005 06:22 AM

I was listening to AJFA a few days ago for the first time in ages. It really is great. I don't know why i don't listen to it more often.

DisposableHeroes 07-24-2005 07:03 AM
Aye - it is
Havent seen you round these here parts for a while *chews wheat*

Apocalyptic Raids 07-24-2005 07:55 AM

I hate Harvester Of Sorrow. Puts me to sleep.

Jev 07-24-2005 07:58 AM

 I love Harvester, i think it's one of the better songs on the album.

Schecterguitarist 07-24-2005 09:10 AM

I,m split on the AJFA album. The guitars sound really unique (i luv the clean tone james and kirk get out of them like in the song AJFA or One). The wors part about it is that i can hardly here the bass. i brought the cd to my guitar teacher to learn some part of One and he sed where the hell is Jason?!

MOP is my fave album becuz of Battery and I luv playing along with the cd on the song master of puppets for 8 and a half minutes

fatbandit 07-24-2005 09:17 AM

You can hardly hear the bass, its true. You can also download from several places on the net versions of the songs with people who've added bass to it if you're that bothered. Part of AJFA being AJFA is the tinny guitars, the weird drums and the pretty much nonexistent bass. It was a weird mix.

Is it just me that can feel a lot of anger coming from AJFA? Far more than St Anger... It feels like there's a lot of emotion in it, and its very raw and powerful.

you just have to listen to the live bass.

St. Anger actually feels more angry than AJFA in my opinion.

i just love the sound setup the way it was on AJFA. even better than MOP or Black album

fatbandit 07-24-2005 10:24 AM

To be honest, I think The Unnamed Feeling sounds angry. I can almost relate well to that song. Past that, AJFA sounded a lot more honest in its anger, and certainly like it had been pent up for a lot longer.

:smash:

(As a side note, I'm looking for Ascendancy by Trivium... If anyone has it and fancies sharing, please don't hesitate to say so! :))

Harvester Of Sorrow is one of the best songs I've ever heard.

St. Anger is way more raw and angry imo. Especially the vocals.

Jev 07-24-2005 01:53 PM

I think the vocals are only angry cos he shouts them.

Bazarov 07-24-2005 02:23 PM
Harvester Of Sorrow is one of the best songs I've ever heard.
Out all my friends that say they hate Metallica, they either like just Harvester of Sorrow or Enter Sandman or both.
St. Anger is way more raw and angry imo. Especially the vocals.
Yes I do agree with this.

Drugstep 07-24-2005 02:28 PM

I like Harvester because it's just one riff after another, and they're all agressive, fun to play riffs.

Schecterguitarist 07-24-2005 02:48 PM

When I think about it I thikn that the point of the AJFA album was the pain james, lars, and kirk wen thru wen they lost cliff. I think that they all felt like a family and james felt that it was an "injustice" that cliff was taken for no reason, it just gave them a hard time and i think that they felt like God was just punishing them for no reson "justice is gone".

Drugstep 07-24-2005 02:51 PM

I believe it's Justice Is Done.

I believe only To Live Is To Die is about Cliff, and the rest is a bout assholes.

Jev 07-24-2005 03:37 PM

It's justice is gone.

Burdcheese 07-24-2005 03:43 PM

Actually... its both.

Huber 07-24-2005 03:44 PM

I looked at the lyrics, it says justice is gone, and then after another line it says justice is done.

Man, I'm listening to that download concert again. It owns so hard. I gotta see Metallica live this time around.

Burdcheese 07-24-2005 04:05 PM

The drum sound on the recordings is horrible. Good show though. I hope they go back to Download next year. I'm not much of a festival person - but they'd draw me in.

PepsiMetal 07-24-2005 04:14 PM
Man, I'm listening to that download concert again. It owns so hard. I gotta see Metallica live this time around.
Yea that concert was great especially songs with Joey. Seek and destroy, creeping death, and from whom the bell tolls were all great. Plus drumming was different than lars'.

Lars will probably add some more complexity into drums in the next album too. Like how he had a drum intro in almost every song on st. anger. That never happened on any album before.

hethamulburton 07-24-2005 05:19 PM

Yea listen to the song, he says both like 10 times.

Kickflip_Burrito 07-24-2005 05:36 PM

The only below-par recording on the Download cd was Battery but it's still okay.

Creeping Death and Sad But True are ace.

Schecterguitarist 07-24-2005 06:16 PM

Lars has a lot of talent and that was shown on St.Anger. I hope that they giv him a chance to solo like they did for cliff like mayb another intrumental with a drum solo. Or maaybe he can show off in the middle of a song for a bit just not as much power as st.anger's drums were. What I also think would be cool is a St.Anger type of instrumental (in drop C) i kno that they could definetly pull that off, they havnt made one in like 18 years

Huber 07-24-2005 06:21 PM

The drumming on St. Anger was average as usual.
