Pretty long-winded way of saying you're too scared to write anything but don't mind slagging off people who do.
What, my 4 lines of excuse-making at the end? I'm busy and I'm selfish, I admit it completely. And I don't know what impression I've given here, but my problem is more with the community anyways; I enjoy reading the reviews by most of the staff and some more eloquent users to hear their perspectives on things, that's why I still occasionally show up here, but the majority of the community is pretty stupid.
And it is possible to be able to identify techniques and signatures without being able to play them.

He didn't have to say it to say it. He's saying he doesn't want to write anything because nobody will read it, and he's also saying that you have to be able to play something to understand it. Regardless of what he's talking about, his initial point was that he doesn't want to write anything because he doesn't think anyone will read it.
Dood I just think if it's a question of whether or not I should waste my time on something people probably won't read anyway on this little tiny corner of the internet, that is not the same thing as 'I am scared of writing.' Pretty disingenuous interpretation if you ask me.

And for the record, on the topic of technicality and theory, you certainly don't need to be a musician to appreciate or to review. In my opinion knowing the theory sometimes helps, and sometimes it gets in the way of your ability to appreciate.

People will read it. And it's surprisingly not a tiny corner at this point, this review site gets over 20,000 unique visitors a day. Don't ask me how though.

Apoc 05-13-2010 02:08 PM

Tyler - fair enough lol, but then the question becomes whether or not I should be spending my time writing a review that the sputnik review site community will probably read.

not a bad idea to be honest. hope it's worked out. I was talking hypothetically. Just came back to mx for the first time in days and this huge argument was going on, figured i'd jump in. I've written one or two reviews, mostly for myself, but just haven't had the time since.

Itwasthatwas 05-13-2010 02:13 PM
you're implying someone can't completely enjoy jazz or fusion without a knowledge of music theory, which is wrong. Knowing what key the music is in, or what the time signatures are, or what modes they switch between has nothing to do with what the artist is trying to do, and if they are just trying to be technical then the music is lifeless.

Knowing the history of an album will give a richer experience of the album than knowing the theoretical structure of the album
That isn't really what I'm trying to imply; I guess all I should really say is that to me personally, appreciating the musical devices used is as important to appreciating an album as taking in the final creative product. Knowing what's technically going on, and in the modern day, what's going on from a production standpoint, has everything to do with what the artist is trying to do, because those are the media they used to express themselves. It's just like with poetry and literature, there's the surface value, emotional impact, and history behind a piece of writing that can be amazing, but there's also value in deconstructing what techniques the author used to communicate those feelings and gaining appreciation for the piece that way. I guess all I'm trying to say is that there are two sides to appreciating music; in my opinion, the people who say its all about technicality aren't right, but neither are the people who say the technical side of things isn't important at all. They both need to be there.

unique visitors don't necessarily equal out to the sum, plus that doesn't factor in standard visitor base etc

See this is a totally different situation and something I totally respect. For the people like you who the actual process of writing is important, and for people who writing about the albums they like helps them appreciate it, that's totally cool. But if I were to write, it would be for the community. There are other communities I contribute to in my free time, like Harmony Central and Gearslutz, because it's a community where I learn a lot and want to give back; but to me, I'm in my last year of medical school and am trying to continue to put out albums and do small local production jobs on the side, I haven't really felt like it'd be worth my time to expose very few users to some of the albums I like. It's discouraging when you look up some great albums on the site and they have like 4 ratings when **** like AILD is being hyped to ridiculous lengths
