There was no feud between Skynyrd and Young it was just semi-playful words, they were fans of each other....even performed together a couple times.

Skynyrd's first two albums are great, Ronnie VanZant is underrated as a writer.
Tragedy really didn't make them that much more famous it just killed two of the best members.

And some say Young > Skynyrd...not really comparable, Neil Young's song about the South was BS if I was Skynyrd I would've bashed him non-playfully. That crazy Canuck couldn't speak from experience. I prefer VanZant's writing to Young's although Young has some good ones. And semi-off topic, is Young alive :o I'm not into him much/don't know jack****e about him.

Yes, he's alive.

I've only heard one song because it's alot $$ but I'm thinking of buying the Cd/Dvd. It got really good reviews though.:)
Gilmour also pretty much taught Barrett guitar, which has always struck me as pretty odd, considering the order in which they were in the band...
i'm a few pages late, but that's really interesting. where did you read that? that site/book must know something i don't, im curious now.

gilmours guitar playing always seemed a little more, whats the word, educated maybe? how long did the two know eachother for? i thought Gilmour was just found when they needed to replace barret, i didn't know he had an existing relationship with the band.

thickasabrick 12-29-2004 05:59 PM

i'm a big fan of both Skynyrd and Young, but i find a lot of Skynyrds songs are a little more focused on the guitar playing, not the words. don't get me wrong, Van Zandt could write song great songs, my favourite might be Simple Man, but i dont think he was quite as good as Young.

I think Skynyrd was a great band, but if you compare Van Zandt himself against Young, it's not much of a contenst. Neil just has so many more dimensions, in my opinion.

jpj 12-29-2004 06:00 PM

Glmour and Barrett were friends for a good bit. I believe they went to the same college too where they played together a lot, and I'm pretty sure Gilmour said in an interview that he was always a little more talented than Barrett.

I read than in a guitar magazine from like 1994 that was all about Floyd.

And I think Young's songwriting abilities were much greater than Van Zandt's.

thickasabrick 12-29-2004 06:03 PM

that's pretty cool, I think Gilmour was always the better guitarist, Barrets mind was just too far out there to focus in on the guitar like Gilmour did.

Today I saw the Festival Express DVD in a store, i wanted to buy it..but i was running very low on cash. I wanna buy it sometime though, anybody see it yet? i wanna hear some highlights!

Me too. I saw it at the store yesterday and really wanted to get it, but ended up not.

Another fact to shove in your braincase, Gilmour and Barret grew up together in the same town, not just went to college together. He used to teach Syd Rolling Stones licks. :p

thickasabrick 12-29-2004 06:10 PM

keep the facts coming, i enjoy shoving things into my braincase.

Did Gilmour teach himelf guitar?

jpj 12-29-2004 06:10 PM

I was gonna get Festival Express but 30 bucks, come on.

Sounds like a good price to me.

jpj 12-29-2004 06:11 PM

$30 for a DVD, are you kidding?

gmoneyguy 12-29-2004 06:13 PM

Oh shii... I thought it was a multiple dvd set. ya thats crazy

jpj 12-29-2004 06:14 PM

Nope just one DVD. I got the entire 1st season of The Simpsons for that.

Broken Arrow 12-29-2004 06:14 PM

Has anyone seen the Syd Barret story on DVD? I was watching it and thought it was great yet disturbing.

Syd's friend video taped his first acid trip and it was pretty funny because he put this hash browns on his face and was moving his hands around.

They were also jamming in this club and the music was very good and it showed Syd kind of beat boxing and playing with a zippo on the neck of his guitar.

thickasabrick 12-29-2004 06:15 PM

i'd gladly spend 30 bucks, but i've spent several hundred bucks in the past month, and im buying a $3000 amp tomorrow. so im trying to cut down on my spending for now. the dvd can wait, it's not going anywhere.

jpj 12-29-2004 06:16 PM

Haha, that's pretty cool. I've never seen it, do you have it or was it on TV?

My cousin got it from music world for $10. Near the end of Syd's career I think he kind of resembled Alice Copper because of the black eye thing happening.

clown_phobia 12-29-2004 06:23 PM

Isn't Syd Barrett in a mental institution?

Your right. I think he just lives quietly in England somewhere. Now he fat and bald though.

clown_phobia 12-29-2004 06:28 PM

what do you think syd barrett thinks of what pink floyd did after he was no longer in the band?

Badmoon 12-29-2004 06:29 PM

I was watching the Grateful Dead movie today. Good stuff :thumb:
