They hurt my thumb after a while.

Since I don't know how to make power chords, I don't know how similar they are. A barre chord is a chord where you use one finger to press down multiple strings, like F.

At the moment I'm just trying to change chords faster than a snail, but I'll remember that for future reference.

Change chords fast just comes from building up you muscle memory.

I have actually made some progress, but I'm still a long way from actually playing a song and making it sound good.

I know a little, but I have to sit and think about it. Like I know the names of intervals, and I (kind of) know what notes I can play over a certain backing, but my stuff feels so basic.

Well they are pretty good about making sure that stuff doesn't happen. I do make stuff up about myself when they ask though, its pretty funny.
