it's about the 12 step aloholics anonymous program, each song discribes a few steps of the plan :)
Really? Well thats interesting.

the2stranger 08-09-2005 04:20 PM

Triangle explained it better than me, and he beat me with posting to :p
so here goes
TGP was written about the first 3 steps in the Alcoholics Anonymous 12-Step Program, and after SDOIT came out Mike said he would like to write a song on each album that continued with that theme. This Dying Soul is about steps 4 and 5.

The two songs share some lyrics and a riff, and there is also some small references to The Mirror, which is about the same subject.
;)
enjoy Dream Theater

chorbalan 08-09-2005 04:24 PM

One thing I hate is that I can never listen to the lyrics. These guys are two advanced musically and I allways findmyself listening to the music and not being able to pay attention to the lyrics.

MAthiAS 08-09-2005 04:33 PM

You're lucky, because the lyrics suck balls on 8vm.

Unfortunately, that is a true statement.
Could you upload please? (YSI)
Sure, if you answer my question (about the covers) and send me you email. I wouldn't say its quite as good as the original (I'd take Floyd over Dream Theater any day,) but I still like it a lot.

On the - A Change of Seasons EP they did several live covers by- Elton John, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Kansas, Queen, Journey, Dixie Dregs and Genesis.

horseypie 08-10-2005 04:38 AM

its really sad the lyrics sucked soo much on 8vm....i was expecting more...

but musically their still awesome....and as someone said before i get sucked into listening to the music not the lyrics....which happens to me cuz i love petrucci...so i got over bad lyrics rather quickly

Special Brew 08-10-2005 05:07 AM

I was kind of dissapointed with Octavarium. They really didn't live up to their name. I really like the CD, but it is nothing if you compare it to the past releases.

Yeah I basically feel the same way, but on the other hand I think the title track is mindblowing.

Some of the instrumental section is great but other parts are so "meh". It's a pretty **** good song though. Now, whether or not it matches "A Change of Seasons", is a different story entirely...

juggalotricksta 08-10-2005 06:47 PM

Its not anywhere near ACOS. The whole 8vm album was anticlimactic if you ask me. It had such a build up behind the release...dont get me wrong, its a great album, and I really enjoy it. But its not a great album by DT standards. If any other band had released the same cd, it would have been just fine. But Mike and the boys can do better.

guitarist.kid 08-10-2005 11:09 PM

is the Gigan Tour a part of Octavarium world tour? or will they come back to north america after europe and japan?
thanks.

They are touring Europe/Asia then taking a short break and hitting North America with and Evening With... tour in February/March. If I'm not mistaken, expect to hear Octavarium(the song) on the Evening With... tour.

I don't know if you've seen this yet, but:
DREAM THEATER’s Scenes From A Memory Turned Into Full Length Stage Play

BATS (Bexhill Amateur Theatrical Society, www.thebats.co.uk) writer/director Danni Segal has contacted BW&BK with the following news...

DREAM THEATER’s acclaimed 1999 concept album Scenes From A Memory is being turned into a full-length stage play. Adapted and directed by long-time Dream Theater fan Danni Segal, this is a prose play, not a performance of the CD.

The play runs for four performances from 17th - 19th of November, 2005 (that's 3 evening performances and 1 Saturday matinee) at the De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhill, East Sussex (between Hastings & Eastbourne in South-East England).

As this may be the only time this is ever done, anyone interested is warmly encouraged to come along and see it while they can.

Full details can be found at the BATS website at www.thebats.co.uk, which will be regularly updated as work progresses.
I'm still trying to decide whether it's worth the journey or not (about 400 miles for me I think).
You're lucky, because the lyrics suck balls on 8vm.
James all together sucks in my opinion. I wish they would just be LTE. All instrumental. Whenever I watch one of their live videos, and they go on a tangent I forget that Jamie is in the band. When he comes back in I get pissed... lol

Same with me, but I don't like Octavarium. I don't like the 'new' Dream Theater.

I like the "new dream theater", but you cant compare it to their older stuff. You cant expect a band to sound the same forever. You need to allow for some growth.

chorbalan 08-12-2005 01:52 PM

Just bought Octavarium. I love it, it does seem a lot heavier then their previous work. What is you guys take on this.

It may be heavier than some of their previous works, but I think Train of Thought is heavier.

the2stranger 08-12-2005 02:07 PM

I like 8vm, but it's quite diifferent from early stuff.
I think in half a year I'll be able to give a final decision about the album :p

Images and Words is my favorite album by them and ToT my 2nd favorite, so I like both DT styles.
and I place 8vm somewhere in between in terms of heaviness.

in terms of greatness it's not near my top, although the title track is amazing

YouGottaBeCrazy 08-14-2005 11:47 AM

Can anyone upload their cover of "Perfect Strangers" from A Change of Seasons for me, please?

I bought Train of Thought Yestaday, It's the first Dream Theatre album I've bought, And I'm all new to the band, It impressed me massivly, the heaviness of the tone, yet all the exquisite(sp) playing of instruments

My favourite song is Either As I Am or Stream of Consiousness

hallowed_ironmaiden 08-14-2005 07:13 PM

Good choice, that was my first album as well. After that I purchased When a Day and Dream Unite. At first I thought it was average, but It grew on me a lot and I love it now!

Thats a great album. Check out Awake and 6DOIT if you like ToT.

When Dream and Day Unite is such an underated album. If you haven't heard it its is your duty as a Dream Theater fan to go out and buy it. If you aren't gonna buy at least listen to YSTE Jam, Fortune in Lies and The Killing Hand and see how great early Dream Theater is.

if youre talking about the album, i agree. but 'sacrificed sons' is a great track.

IAJP 08-15-2005 08:15 AM

I realy need to get ToT. I got ACOS on Satruday...it's alright.

the2stranger 08-15-2005 09:13 AM

has anyone ever noticed that LaBrie attempts to do Black Metal shrieks on ToT?

on In The Name Of God right after the techno thing, at 7:20 there is 'the justifying violence, teaching hatred in the name of God' part, and if you listen closely you hear the vocals are dubble mixed, and LaBrie screams out his entire guts by performing some weird shriek like screaming, it's mixed in really soft, but you can make it out if you pay attention to it

Darkness 08-15-2005 09:18 AM

^ I actually think thats kinda cool... I wouldn't really call that black metal either.
