Why would you want them to ruin their damn near perfect songs by jamming?
didn't they do some improv stuff on their dvd on closure? That was real cool

BurningSky 10-21-2006 03:29 PM

I've seen Bleak and Blackwater Park live, both songs were incredible...

Eliminator 10-21-2006 03:30 PM

You suck.

Txus 10-21-2006 03:43 PM

I hate you.

Dr. Jake Destructo 10-21-2006 03:54 PM

I'd rather hear some improv or a few added sections than simply listening to the same songs "only louder." Granted, live music is always a greater experience than listening to studio music, but I like it a lot better when there's at least a few variations.

Stoo 10-21-2006 04:40 PM

I saw Bleak... I actually didn't recognise it at first... I went "ahh Bleak" when I heard the drumming at the start. I really wanna see BWP live.

Why don't they do Serenity Painted Death live?

TojesDolan 10-21-2006 05:05 PM

The pitch harmonics would suck big time.

Stoo 10-21-2006 05:08 PM

Yup, bad pinch harmonics would TOTALLY ruin the song.

TojesDolan 10-21-2006 05:15 PM

Or in Godhead's Lament, for instance, the semi-fast section in the intro, by the lead? There's a video where Peter is completely out of... something, his timing is crap, so the song sounds crap.

MAYH and Still Life's material has very complex guitar arrangements that are difficult to perform live. :-0

Stoo 10-21-2006 05:17 PM

What you think is the best song they perform live?

I'd say like The Leper Affinity or TGC...

TojesDolan 10-21-2006 05:33 PM

I think they give Demon of the Fall a lot of power, nonetheless the softer songs, especially In my time of need has such a power live it makes me shiver.

*shivers*

BurningSky 10-21-2006 05:37 PM

In My Time of Need was great, Mikael got the whole crowd to sing along and put lighters up. Closure, however, is the best. The extended jam at the end is wonderful, and that third riff...just wow...
I'm gonna have to second this, but that doesn't stop me from saying Opeth aren't all that great live. I think they are alot more of a band to be experienced at home. Alot of their songs aren't really designed to be played live and so just don't have the same impact live as they do through the stereo. That being said though there are also songs that just scream to be played live like Demon of the Fall, Deliverance and The Drapery Falls(just to name ones they actually play). But I also think they don't choose their sets to well, because there are songs like The Moor, In Mist She Was Standing and Advent that to me scream to be played live and Opeth just don't. They are really solid live though, no slip ups anywhere.
have you ever been on opeth? have you seen them live?

their live show i've seen was great! listening to Mikaels growl live is so stunning and amazing  it was life-changing :p

pate 10-21-2006 06:28 PM

I've seen them live three times, including one of the Chronology shows. I have seen both Bleak and BWP. :):)

Daven 10-21-2006 06:38 PM

Bleak live must've been awesome.

pate 10-21-2006 06:40 PM

It was very awesome. BWP was as well.

Daven 10-21-2006 06:47 PM

When was this concert?

TojesDolan 10-21-2006 06:50 PM

Chronolgy shows must have been awesome.

pate 10-21-2006 06:53 PM

They did Bleak the first time I saw them, October of last year. They did BWP at the Chronology show. The one I attended was in Chicago on March 2.

Daven 10-21-2006 06:56 PM

Lucky bastard. :p

pate 10-21-2006 07:04 PM

Ya rly. Three times in under a year. :p

BurningSky 10-21-2006 07:32 PM

I saw them in Philly on Halloween last year. They played Bleak and Blackwater Park. I also went to the chronology show in New York. They played The Night and the Silent Water, it was grand...

pate 10-21-2006 07:33 PM

TNATSW was killer!!

Eliminator 10-21-2006 08:31 PM

Last night I noticed that I had My Arms, Your Hearse download, but I deleted it anyway along with all the other stuff I've never listened to.

I'll get it again.

pate 10-21-2006 08:35 PM

Why did you delete it if you're just going to get it again?

Eliminator 10-21-2006 08:38 PM

Because my logic knows no boundaries.

TojesDolan 10-21-2006 09:29 PM

lol

Anyway, I'll buy MAYH first, and then Still Life. GG

DaveTheAmazing 10-22-2006 09:51 AM

I got MAYH today. I've already got Morningrise, Damnation and BWP. I really like Morningrise and Damnation. I think BWP is okay. I can't seem to get into MAYH at all. I love Morningrise for moments like Advent at 8:10 on wards, TNATSW at 07:35 onwards, Nectar at 6:50 onwards, Everything from the 9th minute to the end of the song on BRI, and everything about TBYF. I haven't heard anything like this on MAYH. I've listened to it right through 3 times so far, hasn't grown on me at all

Try listening to it all the way through while reading the lyrics. Thats what I did when I first got it. I don't know, its a badass cd to me.

Det_Nosnip 10-22-2006 10:25 AM

MAYH is definitely an album that grows on you, but...it never STOPS growing on you, that's the thing - I've found that I like it even more every time I listen to it.
