He probably would. But as I've said before, that's speculation. The reason people hold dead musicians like Burton and Cobain in such hig esteem is because of their unfulfilled potential. The thing is, Cliff could have gone onto be the best bassist in the world, or he could have just put his bass down after the MoP tour and quit music. As we can't tell what would have happened, we can't say he'd be as good. So all we can judge is today's Rob against the Cliff of '86 in his prime. And with that in mind, Rob is better.

Except Cobain blew *** chunks. Since Metallica continued and followed in his wake, I'd say he'd go on, but you're right that judging the Cliff of 86 and Rob of now, would go Rob's way. But, I say Cliff would still stand a **** good chance.

I believe Cliff had the potential to be the best bassist for what he does.

I mean, he wasn't technically amazing, but hey knew how to play something which sounded **** good. I would have been interested to hear Cliff experiment with some different styles of bass if he was still alive....

I don't believe you could say Rob is (was/would be?) better then Cliff, I haven't heard anything Rob does, except his bass solo (Junglessence?) and I can't say I found that really good (While yes, it had speed etc. and was good from a bass point of view, it wasn't good for what I like), I believe there's some funky part near the start or something, I thought that was cool, and the little break with Orion (Favourite song :cool: ) was cool to hear. I have no real position, except for completely biased towards Burton here, but I think Burton was an amazing bassist, and if he was still alive, would have only gone further.

I agree. I think had Burton been alive, he probably would be far far better as a metal bassist. However, he isn't, and we have no solid evidence that he would have progressed. The Cliff of '86 may have been his plateau for all we know.

Cobain's talent has nothing to do with this. I made the point because he is regarded as a better man than he was, simply because he died young, with plenty of unfulfilled potential, like Cliff, Hendrix, and many others.

Finally, had Cliff been alive and a part of Metallica to this day, we wouldn't be comparing him to Rob now. I still stay adamant about my points :p

I agree completely with that, except replace bass with guitar, but it was his skills on bass which inspired me to pick up guitar :p

Except, Cliff was into heavy metal and punk, like the Misfits.

His favourite band was REM. He didn't listen to metal in his own time much.

I can understand them not taking Les. They knew he was better than Cliff, and it would be kinda ****ed up to just go right to another bassist that was better and be happy with him.

I like lots of covers metallica has done (Am I Evil, Breadfan, Overkill, Turn the Page) but there is one that I disliked a lot......The Ramones 53rd and 3rd. I just sont think they sounded great doin a punk cover but thats just me. I havnt herd much from the misfits,......wut kinda rock do they play?

I really dislike his live stage presence. Whereas James has the best stance ever, its all cool but still really "metal", hard to describe but you all know what its like, and kirk is alrite on stage as well. But Rob, he plays his bass too low, and his arms seem all long and gangly, he also kinda looks like a monkey crawlin round the stage :lol:

He is miles better than Jason, and truely a great player, but he stage presence is really lacking.

an example of what i mean lars may be a ****ty drummer to me, but he fits metallica, i wouldn't want a new metal drummer playing for metallica... it's just not right, i could see trujillo in slipknot or korn, both of which i highly dislike. Now if you took the bass player from in flames, he also wouldn't fit, but he's still got the attitude of classic metal... if that makes sense

Playing low isn't a Nu-metal thing...

It's his style, he's played like that with every band he's been in. None BTW, are Nu-metal bands, or even remotely close to them.

It's gained him popularity as "Donkey Kong", and from what I've heard people love it.

The best bassist stage presence has to be Ryan Martinie from Mudvayne, but Jason Newsted does a great job live as well.

The only thing that doesn't fit for me about Rob is the Basketball tops - but thats a small thing.

I like his unique style - and I have no problems with it in contrast to the other members. Most bands have someone who's more of a stand-out/showman than the other members.

He's far from the only bassist to be different...

Well and Megadeth, but Jason windmills, and Ellefson only rocks back and forward from what I have seen.

Yeah but even though people keep saying they dont think Rob fits, if you see the bass auditions on some kind of monster. Rob was easily the best of the bunch.

Rob owns. The only thing I like better with Jason is his singing, Rob is a backup singer but Newsted had potential to be a kickass lead singer. Robzilla/Donkey Kong > All

I love his crabwalk, his hair flinging (during St Anger, for example) and his little "prance", like he's hopping up but still walking.

Jason sucked in Binge and Purge singing wise. Plus he had some disgusting locks.

You know I think Metallica should hav played some different songs on the S&M album, like insted of devils dance, bleeding me, outlaw torn, until it sleeps, they couldve done saniterium, fade to black, ride the lightning would hav been cool and the unforgiven. I also thought the for whom the beel tolls performance was bad...i liked it for a while but then decided the studio version was much better

Newsteds hair looked f***in cool in binge and purge, it was a mohawk left rly rly long (shaved at the sides but not on top)

Also, Newsted sounded great singing seek and destroy in san diego on the DVD, kinda like lemmy from motorhead

Yes agreed. The two reasons not to get S&M are Fade to Black and Sanitarium. The reasons to get it are One, Master of Puppets, and No Leaf Clover. But they were also promoting a new album, so they had to play some new stuff (except they planned to release S&M, it should have had those two songs)
