Shred Danson 07-27-2005 08:06 PM

Sweep picking ain't too hard once you get the general idea. Once you figure out how to do it, angels descend from heaven and shower you in god light.

I do a lot of 3 string arps, but I'm proficient at 5 string arpeggios, too. Been doing a lot of diminished and minor 7th arpeggios as well.

EDIT: Slayer solos are the musical equivalent of barfs.
Not at all. I love Slayer solos, but Im not too fond on barf. Just because you dont like them doesnt make them barf.

Cain 07-27-2005 08:08 PM

I never do strings of sweeps, probably because my picking style makes it impossible. I tend to do quick ones. One of my favorite licks is this:

E-----------14h15p14---14---------------------------------------------------
B--------15-----------15---15------------------------------------------------
G-----16----------------------14s12h14p12s11h12h14p12p11--------------
D--14------------------------------------------------------------12---14~~~
A--------------------------------------------------------------------14--------
E-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Random stuff like that. Never Yngwie-style.

EDIT: Everybody post their most burning licks! :p R+M's Betcha Can't Play This.

magicbus 07-27-2005 08:13 PM

I can't do sweeps at all. I don't understand how you can move that fast, or maybe I'm dragging my pick too fast.

Shred Danson 07-27-2005 08:15 PM

Yeah, I tend to do sweeps more along the lines of

e-19p15----------15-20p17------------17---------------------------
B-------17----17-----------18-----18-------------------------------
G----------16------------------17----------------------------------
D-------------------------------------------------------------------
A------------------------------------------------------------------
E-------------------------------------------------------------------

But I'm also inspired by the way Alexi Laiho plays arpeggios.

e------------------12h17p12--------------------------------
B---------------13----------13--------------------------------
G-----------14----------------14-15-14-12-----------------------
D--------14--------------------------------15-14-12-----12-------
A-12h15----------------------------------------------15------------
E-------------------------------------------------------------------

RiceMonster 07-27-2005 08:16 PM

I can sweep downwards, but I suck at coming back up, and I can't do anything more than a four string sweep really.

Also, I just finished reading the Conclave Of The Shadows series (at least up till book 3), and I must say, it is well written. Perhaps not as good as the Riftwar series, but better than the Serpentwar series.

RCA 07-27-2005 08:18 PM

E-----------------------------12-15-12-------12-15-12-------------------
B------------------12----12-------------12-------------15----------------
G-10----12-14-15-----14------------------------------------12--10--12~~
D----10-------------------------------------------------------------------
A-------------------------------------------------------------------------
E-------------------------------------------------------------------------

My favorite lick (more of a phrase in the ways I use it) of mine.

Shred Danson 07-27-2005 08:18 PM
EDIT: Everybody post their most burning licks!
I liek that idea. So much, in fact, that I'm gonna go record some on my laptop and post them on here. I shall return in a while.

Cain 07-27-2005 08:19 PM

That's pretty cool, ICB.

My most burning lick is this one. On a good day I can play it in under a second, not including the notes on the D string (that takes about 1.5). :D

E-----------------------3h5h7p5p3/2h3h5p3p2p0----------------------------
B---------------3h5h7-----------------------------h2h3h5p3p2p0------------
G--------2h4h6-----------------------------------------------------h2h4~~~
D-2h4h5----------------------------------------------------------------------
A------------------------------------------------------------------------------
E------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hehe, that's like all of my metal style solos ;)

I tend not be a shred wanker, no sweep picking or tapping or anything. Maybe a few fast parts every once in a while.

RiceMonster 07-27-2005 08:39 PM

I'm not much of a shredder either, so I like to make use of what I can do, and it's worked out for me so far.

BoboTheRagingHobo 07-27-2005 08:44 PM

Shredding would be fun and all, but I just suck to much at self discipline to get to that point. It is hard to keep a routine of practicing and such and studying theory and such things, I always get bored of it. :\

Besides, over technical skill I would rather have good song writing ability by far.

RCA 07-27-2005 08:47 PM

I focus more on riff-writing than I do lead guitar skill, but I'm going to start building my chops more.

I agree with Bobo, songwriting is definitely what comes first.

RiceMonster 07-27-2005 08:54 PM

I've started recording my own music. The first track I layed down didn't require any techinicality, and I was happy. So I don't think I need it that much, but then again I may need it for my band.

Space Dementia 07-27-2005 09:01 PM

I have always been too lazy to play my bass so I am unfortunately terrible at it. I have been picking up my act over the last couple of weeks though and have started practising on a daily basis. I still can't quite get into theory and I find it really boring. I have discovered lately that I much prefer writing my own songs to learning a song by someone else. I have all capabilities to record but my sound card is buggered. So in analysis, I am a lousy bassist :):upset:

That was me by the way, I was bored out of my mind so made a new account. I hate not being able to sleep and its 4am. I am so incredibly bored and tired :upset:

I use it to hunt evil wizards. ;) I need to get back on AIM again, I miss talking to all my American buddies.

It seems I have all the English/Aussies on MSN, and the North Americans on AIM.
