Wait, I've never talked about Opeth in real life, so I suppose I don't have to worry about this at all.
/sighs of relief |
I've got a good friend who loves Opeth and a good friend who loves Porcupine Tree, so when we discuss Akerfeldt's solo in Arriving Somewhere, I have to say it.
It's pronounced Mee-kah-el.
I'll see if I can find some IPA symbols to better show the pronounciation. ['mi:kʰaɛl o:kʰɛʐfɛltʰ] Or something like close to that.
Yes. These damn americans and they're crappy pronounciation. |
Yeah, that's how we roll in the US of A. :thumb:
Has anyone else besides me realized that every single Opeth album's opening track is always a highlight? |
A lot of Europeans pronounce English words a lot differently than we do.

Has anyone else besides me realized that every single Opeth album's opening track is always a highlight?
I agree with that eith the exception of Ghost Reveries. I think Ghost of Perdition is one of the album's weaker songs, although still damn good. |

In Mist She Was Standing-Definitely Advent-Good, but not the highlight Prelude-Definitely not The Moor-Yes The Leper Affinity-Yes Wreath-Not Really Windowpane-Sure Ghost of Perdition-Definitely |
Strange, as I (and most other Opeth fans) can't get enough of Ghost of Perdition. I actually think it's the best song on the album.
And BurningSky, Prelude doesn't count, because it's not really a song. April Ethereal, however, is...and it's certainly a highlight. |
I'd give every album of theirs an overwhelming "hell yes" except GR.
Don't get me wrong, I loooooooooove Ghost of Perdition. But compared to songs like The Baying of the Hounds, Beneath the Mire, and Reverie/Harlequin Forest, which I practically cream myself over, it (very) slightly pales in comparison. |
Beneath The Mire ftw. :)
|
Ghost of Perdition is my favorite from GR...
And, April Ethereal is good, but When, The Amen Corner, Demon of the Fall, Credence, and Karma are all better than it, IMO... |
I'd have to disagree with that. April Ethereal and When are by far my favorite MAYH songs.
|
In Mist She Was Standing - nah, I much prefer Twilight Is My Robe. IMSWS is cool for the first bit of riffing but beyond that it doesn't seem that great.
Advent-Good, but not the highlight Prelude/April Ethereal - Hm. I wouldn't necessarily say so, because there's so much other awesomeness on that album, but April Ethereal is probably the best overall song on the album. The Moor - Kind of. It is probably Opeth's single best song, but Still Life is so consistent that it's hard to say this is the highlight. Almost every part of Still Life is a highlight to me. The Leper Affinity - most definitely Wreath - No. I really don't like Wreath very much. To me, the highlights of the album are some of Deliverance, the acoustic section of Master's Apprentices, and all of BTPISIO Windowpane - Yes. Best song on the album anyway. Ghost of Perdition - Oh yeah. Best song on the album by far and one of Opeth's all around best. |
That's odd. Especially your take on the Deliverance album. The title track to me seems so boring and sub par by Opeth's standards.
|
Wow, the title track on Deliverance is one of their crowning moments if you ask me. The rest of the album is complete mediocrity.
|
Deliverance is probably the only song on that album I ever skip. |
Deliverance was the song that made me stand up and take notice of Opeth. I'd heard Demon of the Fall and the Drapery Falls, but it was Deliverance that really hooked me. Then I bought the album and was completely turned off the band for a long time.
|
I just looked for my copy of Ghost Reveries and couldn't find it
shucks |

Wtf?! Deliverance is the ****. Wreath bores me pretty hard though. It makes me realize how essential the mellow parts are to Opeth's sound. But like I said, my favorite on the album is BTPISIO. |
I'd much rather BTPISIO or Master's Apprentices then Deliverance.
|
Master's Apprentice is lame. That beginning sucks johnson. It's really cheesey, with one of Opeth's least effective "evil" riffs and the double bass drum and the growls. It just sounds stale, stupid and generic. And the song just goes on without any real direction.
|
What the HELL are you talking about, man? I love that riff...it's amazing how something so simple can smash your cunt so effectively.

Agreed totally. There are some cool riffs in the 3-4 minute area, I guess, but the main riff is just totally bland. Then the acoustic section is really beautiful. Without that I don't think I'd hardly listen to the song at all. BTPISIO is brilliant though. I love the absolutely disgustingest growls Mike ever did, over that acoustic riff, and the lyrics are really evocative. Then the creepy carnival part is so different from anything else Opeth has ever done, and the closing riffs are sweet too. |
The riff is evil as hell and all, but if you step back and say "wait a minute...this is OPETH?" you realize it's far below the standard Mikeal has for writing something it is just extremely unique and way more interesting melodically and harmonically. It's just very blatant--there's no subtelty to it, and absolutely nothing interesting about it.
The rest of the song is just rehashing everything they did on Still Life and Blackwater Park. |
Yes, granted, it's not very Opeth. I still love it though.
To each his own. :thumb: |
I will give the acoustic part some credit, because it is quite beautiful and awesome. Still, it can't save the entire song.
|
An entire chorus of Steve Wilson and Akefeldt does have its benefits.
I dunno though, sometimes you just need a simple, evil riff. And Master's Apprentices does it extremely well. |
my arms your hearse and deliverance are the only two opith albums i habn't heard
|
Prelude pfft...
It's Prologue here :p hence Epilogue. |
that's cool man!
