I obviously suck :(
It's ok...I suck too. :( |
Oh God, this guy is so dumb.
O ****, what reasons do you have, I learned sweeping and fast runs in a day, easy as hell, the fact you can't do it makes it look like you suck. Shred is perhaps the easiest, and most overdone form of guitar playing. Nothing in instrument playing is hard, after you learn it, it becomes second nature, and it takes less and less time for it become second nature the longer you play. And shred came very easily, music comes so extremely easy to me. Its that hellmaburton guy :\
He's basically a dumbass though so no worries. |
munky: I have a RecordNerd account, but it's not even close to being fully up-to-date; in addition, I have a rather slow connection, so any albums that I would upload for people would come in thirds or quarters, so it would be easier on my connection to handle.
Arucard: Ouch.
Nothing in instrument playing is hard, after you learn it, it becomes second nature
What?! Uh, I didn't just pick up a trumpet/guitar or sit down next to a piano/keyboard and then learn it. It was hard to learn how to play those instruments without instruction, and can be still. I don't see what he's getting at. EDIT:
I suck :(
I suck more than the two of you combined at guitar, I'm sure :) |
It's ok...I suck too. :(
We can suck at guitar together (i did not want to say we can suck together for obvious reasons). Then again, his user title is 'Hendrix Is My Jesus.' |
It's hard to sound good after playing really fast for more than 5 seconds. Which is why I don't do it :)
|
But that doesn't stop it being hard to learn to play fast.
|

I tell you, if i could sweep, i would not use it lots. I wish i could pick faster, but i don't really care for sweeping.
|
I'm going to see if I can amass 1000 posts on this account in my 3 week ban
|
I got 600 in two weeks without trying very hard, so you shouldn't have much/any trouble. What you get banned for?
|

Seeing you have so many already I don't think it would be much of a problem :) NP: Queens of the Stone Age - Burn the Witch |

Morbid jokes thread, have you MSN? I don't want to link to it here as that would probably get me banned again |
freakinacage31@hotmail.com
And that is wierd, i got the 'you are not allowed to post for another 20 seconds' thing twice today! Im posting to fast in The Pit. |
I tell you, if i could sweep, i would not use it lots. I wish i could pick faster, but i don't really care for sweeping.
I can pick at a pretty fast speed. I can't sweep for **** though. |
I am very quick with pick speed, but I can't do anything else really. I can't solo decently. (shred soloing, which isn't that big of a deal to me) I can't sweep, but I wouldn't use that anyway.
But yeah man, I learned everything I know in one day, and if you can't do that, you are an idiot and you suck at guitar. /:p |
I totally agree. It taken me two years, i must suck so hard compared to you.
|
I can pick fast like Slayer style alternate picking the E string palm muted, but I cant solo fast. I have no desire to really learn how to either. Soloing isnt as fun as playing real songs.
|
I'm best at Blues and Rock guitar, but I want to play metal. MY metal soloing isn't very good, but I'm satsified with my blues and rock soloing. But then again, Blues and Rock guitar are pretty easy.

What's the difference between soloing and playing "real" solos?
I can pick fast like Slayer style alternate picking the E string palm muted, but I cant solo fast. I have no desire to really learn how to either. Soloing isnt as fun as playing real songs.
I'm pretty fast at rythm, but when I sometimes, when I try to solo I loose count and then I'm just all off, which I guess is why I really stick to rythm. I wouldn't worry (if you are) being able to solo as fast as Kerry King or Hanneman, though Slayer is one of my favorite bands, most of their solos are just random chromatics. |
Legato reigns supreme with my soloing style. Since I improvise everything I rarely get caught up in stupid picking phrasing and other things that kill melodic spirit. I'm pretty fast: I can play pretty much any Satriani song (except for the bridge riff of Mystical Potato Head Groove Thing, and Bells of Lal Part II) and a little Vai. But my right hand is not very accurate. I can do quick gallops by circle picking (using the thumb and index muscles to alternate pick, rather than wrist or arm), but I can't do fast picked lines or tremolo lines to save my life. My rhythm skills are pretty cool, but I'm afraid that if I learn the quick picking stuff I'll kill my legato soloing.
EDIT: Slayer solos are the musical equivalent of barfs. |

I improvise everything as well, and I've become quite good at it. I don't like to write solos, but the advantage is it's not slopy at all, while I make mistakes when I improvise. |
I totally agree. It taken me two years, i must suck so hard compared to you.
Oh gee man you suck you should get off these forums. /wishes that guy would come into this thread. :upset: |
Well, I have theory internalized to the point where I always know where I'm going and what I'm doing, so I rarely mess up in the way. I tend to think of music graphically while I play as well: I'm proud to say that I've made excellent progress in learning to not play positionally. I rarely ever use a box pattern except when I bust out a "lick." But when I'm improvising, I'll include a lot of bending, sliding, position shifting and weird intervals to take me along. It's become rather second-nature.
But that's when I'm jamming. When I have one four-bar solo in a non-guitar-oriented song, I tend to compose one by trial and error: improvising a few solos and eventually settling on one that I will always play for that particular song. |
My soloing style is marked by repetition, mainly.
I'll play a bar, alter it. Then I'll play another bar and alter it, then combine the two. |
since you all appear to be talking a foreign language, I'm going to bed...
|
My style ATM is mainly lick-based.
I haven't delved deep enough into theory to know about all the stuff you talk about, Lucas. I've got a basic knowledge of key/time signatures, time changes, and dynamics, but nothing too in-depth. /me wants to learn more about theory |
I rarely ever use a box pattern except when I bust out a "lick."
I somewhat use box patterns. I call what I use "extended boxes", because I've taken the box patterns, figured out how they work, and figured out how to play the same pattern around the neck. I find it helped me out a lot, added a lot more variety to my leads, and just made them all around more interesting.
My style ATM is mainly lick-based. I'm pretty much at the same level as you, and I could be a lot better if I knew more. |

I've got a basic knowledge of key/time signatures, time changes, and dynamics, but nothing too in-depth. /me wants to learn more about theory
See, time changes and key signatures only really become relevant with learning how to read standard notation. The practical theory, such as scales, chords, scale-chord relationships etc...these are the most important skills to have to be a proficient soloist and composer. You don't need the stuff that gets discussed in a basic theory book that is not oriented towards the average tab-whoring guitarist. The Guitar Grimoire is the perfect book for that kind of study. It's helped immensely with my understanding of that practical theory. I have only recently begun to understand key signatures and time signatures with my study of standard notation, but you don't need any of that to be a good soloist or a proficient songwriter. It's practical if you play an instrument that requires sight-reading: basically, every other kind of instrument besides the fretted ones. |
Haha. Music talk in a musician forum. What a hoot!
Seriously though, since I am very poor at all my chosen instruments (guitar, sax, piano, vocals), I'll just post pictures of my new hunting knife. You use that for hunting?! It looks like it'd be better suited for ancient Celtic sacrificial ceremonies.
EDIT: fix'd |
It's a German hunting knife. Those are celtic patterns, actually. :)
I love the scabbard it came in. It's got perfect balance, as well. |
Guitar talk
I'm a fricken show off when it comes to playing guitar. I've been sweeping for about a year, and it's the funnest technique you can learn. I barely tap anymore because I like to sweep pick better than tapping arpeggios. Good times. Speaking of good times, I've got my internet connection back and now I'm a happy camper. Except for the fact that I can't install AIM for some reason. |
I've been practicing sweeping for about a year now, and I can do clean 4-string sweeps efficiently. I just need to practice them with different arpeggios.
|
A Metalcore guitarist, eh?
Not really. I guess it could be considered that. Stuff like Lamb of God, Unearth. Those two bands are the main influences for the music that I write for my band. |
