I saw someone comment sometime that Ben Folds was a bad pianist because apparently he writes every song in C major.

Wtf?

Lawl.

He's not the best pianist ever, but he's probably one of the best singer/pianists. and he can pull a nice solo. That comment is pretty funny though.

Yeah. He's not the best, but he's far from unskilled.

funkyhoney 10-21-2006 09:39 PM

i hate how people say songs are "bad" because they don't use a huge range of diverse keys, modes and chords/progressions.

I think simplicity can make a better song.
My big complaint with a lot of prog music is that bands concentrate on using half a dozen different really strange time signatures and as many keys while playing rediculously fast and because of that they forget to make the song sound good. Honestly, I can't see someone sitting down just jamming, trying to come up with a good riff to base a song on, and playing something in like 10/8. It seems to me you would have to say "Oay, I want to make a song in 10/8".

BenJammin 10-21-2006 09:44 PM

Yeah. I dunno about you, but when I just 'jam' my natural inclination is to play in 4/4.

4/4 and 12/8 are the most common signitures that people will play in while imporivsing i believe

12/8? :|

Seems a bit random.
12/8? :|

meh, you can do it inadvertantly, after all you can still break it into 4/4

1 2 3 2 2 3 3 2 3 4 2 3

count the beats :smash:

BenJammin 10-21-2006 09:54 PM

I suppose. Don't get smart with me. My brain capacity is running pretty low right now, on account of the fact that I've been slaving over this essay since 7:30pm.

Akira 10-21-2006 09:55 PM

Messing around I usually play in either 4/4 or 6/8 or 12/8 or w/e multiple of three you want. 4/4 is more common, but I do both.

Akira 10-21-2006 10:04 PM

I guess I should go to bed. I'm tired and have way too much crap to do tomorrow.

See you guys later.

BenJammin 10-21-2006 10:05 PM

i'll take that offer, we need rain, ****ing level 4 water restrictions :(

Efrim 10-21-2006 10:07 PM

Night Akira.
I have a strange habit of dropping into 9/8 when I'm writing. It's annoying, because I can't consciously play in 9/8 without other instruments.

gladly, southern CA needs it bad hahaha!

exactly 3 years ago from now (well actually the end of next week) we had exactly the same conditions, even the Santa Annas, and that's when we had those infamous fires that burned up about half the land(all the land is hills and after summer all the brush is dead which means very fire friendly) in San Diego, and i think LA got hit pretty hard too. i'm getting scared!

PaulSimonon 10-22-2006 12:43 AM

PaulSimonon 10-22-2006 12:45 AM

Anyways I probably shouldn't be posting in such a condition, I'm gonna go lie down and watch some TV.
