It's rather irritating. I've listened to an Avenged Sevenfold song, the riffage of which could have been power metal to an extent but for god's sake the feeling is totally different. I doubt this guy (or whoever calls such bands power metal) has any idea of the genre.
He doesn't. And yes, the feeling is totally different, its alot more depressing than PM. And Sliptallica : Whack on some Angra. They are probably my faverouoite PM. |
I'm not sure about Dragonforce but Blind Guardian should not be hard to find :)
Yeah, thanks. I'm just getting Blind Guardian. I got all the Dragonforce I can, unless they released something live I may not have known about  /blindly hopes |

Best album I heard in 2004 and once of the best power albums I own (especially in terms of solo parts, drumming and production). My personal favourite song is Temple Of Hate (Kai Hansen is god!) |

Truth. The fact that the album is so experimental, with loads of acoustic and folky parts means its abit of a hard nut to crack, but i love it even more for that. Faverouite songs are 'The Shadow Hunter' and 'Waiting Silence.' |
He doesn't. And yes, the feeling is totally different, its alot more depressing than PM.
I listened to a couple songs from City of Evil to see what the hell everyone was talking about, and I have to agree. While the music seems to be inspired by power metal, it still has too much of a visceral punk sound to really be classed among real power metal bands. I'd say Avenged Sevenfold's new direction is more of a speed metal revival approach, personally. |

Yeah Stoic that one that my friend showed you I agree it is Power Metal influenced but in NO WAY plain Power Metal. Its Metalcore with Power Metal touches it you wanted to get techniqual. Stoic I got those uploads GREAT STUFF but it no Effel 65 |
I'm back and downloading that Angra song.
/listens This band, good stuff. I'll be sure to get more material. |
Are you talking about the ABBA uploads or the power uploads?
I was actually under the impression that Eiffel 65 were a god-awful pop/dance band that made that atrocious song "Blue". |
I was actually under the impression that Eiffel 65 were a god-awful pop/dance band that made that atrocious song "Blue".
They're okay. Blue was just an over-hyped radio single. They've made better songs than that. But to like them, you have to either like, or at least not mind electronica. |
Abba own them all

Oh, I do like electronica. I'll give them a second chance. Now, onto Power Metal. Let the official War Council be reconvened. |

As in former Helloween? Is he in Angra? Just picked up their album and I thought it was one of the most refreshing albums I'd heard this year. The production was very good, like you said, and it gives the album an almost dreamy touch (discribed with my limited vocabulary). |
As in former Helloween? Is he in Angra?
He was guest vocalist in that song (Temple of Hate). Hansi Kursch also did some vocals on Winds of Destination. This is why I bought the album without second thought as soon as it came out :p When Kai Hansen and Hansi Kursch appear, quality is guaranteed! |

I'll add it to my rules to live by then. |
Did you get the DVD with the album? I was amazed at how cleanly and amazingly they pulled of all the songs on the Rebirth tour. Number Of The Beast was done brilliantly, with some great DB drum stuff.
On the subject of A7X : They are no longer Metalcore, they are really just plain metal, but with alot more talent and skill than most plain metal bands out there today. |
I'll add it to my rules to live by then.
Duly added to mine too. |
All this talk of A7X is starting to pique my interest - I've always dismissed them as horrible metalcore, but reading recent posts like the ones above it seems they've got quite a following, even in this thread.
Would anyone be kind enough to upload a couple of their tracks that you think I, a dyed-in-the-wool powermetaller might like? |
I'm uploading the song I was sent at the moment, watch this post. I repeat the feeling is totally different, to be power metal.
Gigantour rules.
Damn you...Therion is awesome.
Gigantour was in-freakin-credible. I took your advice and made a mad rush to the front after Kill Dry Logic finished, only to find out that you needed pit tickets to get to the front  Anyway, Symphony owned. Minus the random jokes in between the songs, they sound exactly like they do on their albums. As for their act on stage, I was going completely insane during their set and didn't notice too much of what they were doing :p Their 20 minute set felt like five. I can't wait to see them next time they come back here. Nevermore was next, and they were good, the only complaint I had about their performance was that you couldn't hear Warrel too well. I was very happy when they played Born, Enemies of Reality, and Final Product. Final Product was put in as kind of an afterthought...the band was just about to walk off stage, and then they came running back and said "whoa! we almost forgot a song!". I guess it's hard to do as well as they could have since they were put into a tiny time slot, and their equipement was kind of just shoved to the front. I'm sure they're gonna be awesome when they do their tour with Opeth  Life of Agony...umm....reminded me of kernals in a popcorn machine. They were all over the place, I can't believe the energy those guys have. I haven't heard much by them, but from what another guy was saying, their performance was much different from their albums. Fear Factory wasn't bad at all, they aren't my favourite band, but I really enjoyed their set. By that time people actually started showing up, and people were really getting into it. Right at the end of their set, they started playing Walk - the crowd noticed it and went mad cheering and headbanging - and they said some stuff about Dimebag as a tribute. They actually took time setting up for the first headliner, which was Dream Theatre. They had to get seven guys to push out Portnoy's massive drum set, complete with three bass drums and a gong. Petrucci came on soloing, and they proceeded to put on a awesome performance. They went off stage...and I noticed that Portnoy was wearing a bath robe. After had left, the crowd kept yelling for Dream Theater to come back on. They did Pull Me Under as an encore :D Then, after the longest set up time during the show, the lights went off, and Dave Mustaine walked on stage. They started with Blackmail the Universe, and had an awesome set that included Sweating Bullets, Tornado of Souls, and Hangar 18. They put on a wicked show, with ten foot flames and other pyrotechnics. The whole band was really into it, especially Dave, who looked like he put everything he had into the performance. The crowd was going wild through the whole two hour set, and in the middle of it a guy gave Dave a Canadian flag with Dave Mustaine for Prime Minister written across it. Heh...he'd be much better than the goons we have in Parliament now. During their last song, Portnoy snuck on and took over the drum set. Dave pulled him up to the front, introduced him to the crowd as DT's drummer and a good friend and thanked him, the rest of DT, and Symphony for a great show. After the encore (Holy Wars!), the show ended, and everyone left watching the fireworks show that had started right by the Molson Ampitheatre. Perfect way to end a great night :D |
Thank you for sharing :)
Symphony X played only for 20 mins?! And that with Nevermore was quite the story (:p), for how long did they play anyway? Damn, I hate to see how these incredible bands were so overlooked in this festival. Where does it take place, by the way? USA or Canada? |
Stoic - thanx for the download! On first listening I have to say they won't be rising meteorically into my list of fave bands, but it isn't too bad. I'm also notoriously tough on music I'm not familiar with; it usually takes me a while to get "into" new stuff.
BTW, anyone else think the first minute or so of this track sounds rather like Sonata Arctica? |

I agree, it bites that they got so pushed to the side, it seemed all the bands who were there were opening acts for Dream Theater and Megadeth. Many of the people who came to the show didn't even get to see the first few bands, a lot of people didn't even really start arriving until Fear Factory came on stage. But whatever, I'm still glad I got to see them. It was in Canada by the way, note the part about the Canadian flag being given to Mustaine :p. The tour went through North America though. |

It was clearly sarcastic. Stoic I meant the song uploads not ABBA. |
people didnt bother to come and see the first two bands?! Heh, I would leave after seeing those two! I'm glad you had a good time but I feel REALLY bad for the way Nevermore and Symphony X. For god's sake, they're too big to be treated this way (come in europe dudes!).

They weren't the first two bands, Bobaflex played first, and we missed half of Kill Dry Logic's set. We missed the train we were supposed to get on and got there kinda late. I was also horribly embarrassed with the way TO responded to Symphony and Nevermore. And I'm planning on going to school in Europe after my first year in the Arts faculty, so maybe I will get to see them there :D |
I purchased Rhapsody's "Legendary Tales" yesterday. "Land of Immortals" is an amazing tune, one of my favorites of Rhapsody's already, and so far my favorite on the album.
|
I wish I could see Dream theater... They are only playing 3 UK dates, two in London and oe in obscure Wolverhampton Why? I mean why?
not close enough to me to be able to go, plus I am finally out of cash, so I resign from going to gigs further away than Newcastle until next year... on my list of bands I must see are iced earth blind guardian cannibal corpse mayhem probably metallica...just to see what they're like live... dream theater sonata arctica children of bodom |
Blind Guardian are touring in europe in September/October 2006 I think :D
