Are there any more parts to shine on you crazy diamond than 1 and 2?

magicbus 01-19-2005 03:23 PM
/me is listening to "Let there be more light"
/me is listening to "Remember A Day". Must buy this cd.

Syd Barret does, in fact, not perform anywhere on Ummagumma.

Shine On You Crazy Diamond is divided into Parts I-V and VI-IX (1-5 and 6-9 if you don't know roman numerals.)

Track 1 is I-V, and Track 5 is VI-IX.

I also found several interesting, yet depressing, quotes about the time when Syd showed up during the recording of WYWH.

Pink Floyd: The Illustrated Discography says: "During the WYWH sessions a fat, shaven-headed person wearing grey Terylene trousers, a nylon shirt and string vest wandered into the studio. The band ignored the visitor and kept on playing and it was the visiting Andrew King who finally recognised their guest: 'Good God, it's Syd! How did you get like that?
' To which Syd replied, 'I've got a very large fridge at home and I've been eating a lot of pork chops.' The whole event was slightly un-nerving since the theme of the album was based on Syd and his subsequent madness."

About that, Rick Wright said: "The whole album sprang from that one four-note guitar phrase of Dave's in Shine On. We heard it went, That's a really nice phrase. The wine came out, and that led to what I think is our best album, the most colourful, the most feelingful. Shine On was in the process of being recorded, the lyrics about Syd were written. I walked into the studio at Abbey Road, Roger was sitting, mixing at the desk, and I saw this big bald guy sitting on the couch behind. About 16 stone. And I didn't think anything of it. In those days it was quite normal for strangers to wander into our sessions. Then Roger said, You don't know who that guy is, do you? It's Syd. It was a huge shock, because I hadn't seen him for about six years. He kept standing up and brushing his teeth, putting his toothbrush away and sitting down. Then at one point he stood up and said, Right, when do I put the guitar on? And of course he didn't have a guitar with him. And we said, Sorry Syd, the guitar's all done."

DeusExMachina 01-19-2005 04:07 PM

Man, that's really sad... **** hippies, polluting Syd's mind.

Cain 01-19-2005 04:17 PM

Good to be back, Riva. Sorry I can't give you rep back in return, I have to spread around.

I'm not one to quote myself, but this line is really sad. Especially if you know that he's insane.

Dr. Jake Destructo 01-19-2005 08:43 PM
It's rad. However, in the end, when they're chanting while the guitar solo is going on... no good. It ruins the solo for me.

Oh, Riva, rep++ for the awesome avatar.
Yes. That was the one part about ABITW pt. 2. Right when the solo starts, the bastard teacher starts yelling. What an idiot.

I was watching the extras about 15 minutes ago. I really liked the video for "Hey You." It's one of my favorite songs offa The Wall.

DeusExMachina 01-20-2005 01:55 PM

I actually haven't seen the video for Hey You yet... I should watch that now.

The Fonz 01-20-2005 03:58 PM

wat is a good Pink Floyd album?

magicbus 01-20-2005 04:05 PM

Do you guys know if Waters originally intended for The Wall to be made into a movie? Or did the director approach him after the album had been released?

Jimmy 01-20-2005 04:06 PM

Pink Floyds best album in my opinion is Atom Heart Mother. The most surreal, sublime and beautiful album ever made.

I don't like it that much compared to other Floyd albums mainly because it emulates PATGOD too much.

Jimmy 01-20-2005 04:17 PM

PATGOD is also one of Floyd's best albums. But Atom Heart Mother is the best, because the suite on the first half is too brilliant for words, if is brilliant, summer '68 is brilliant, fat old sun is brilliant, and alan's psychedelic breakfast is brilliant.

I've found that if there's an album Floyd fans haven't listened to, it's Atom Heart Mother. That is an atrocity, it's their best album.

+if you guys have never found it, here's a great website which explains The Wall (the album and the movie) in extreme depth. Lots of great stuff.

I dont think AHM is anything like Piper. Piper never had horns or crazy oprea singers. Piper and AHM are almost polar opposites, Piper was extremely dissonent where AHM is very mellow and uses alot of clean tones and acoustic instrumentation.

Alan's Psychadelic Breakfast is easily one of my favorite songs.

guitarded_chuck 01-20-2005 06:43 PM

So they played ABITW Pt. 2 on the annoucements today at school. It was weird. /random
Right, when do I put the guitar on?
Man. It boggles my mind how someones mental state can get so bad. Syd's story is so tragic. I honestly believe that had he not of screwed up, he would have been on the of greatest and most interesting, and still quite popular lyricists of the 70's.

Riva 01-20-2005 07:31 PM

Indeed. Syd could have been such an influence on modern music, if he hadn't suffered that kind of mental breakdown.

Doop 01-20-2005 07:42 PM

Just wondering, does any one have a video of Rogers and Clapton prefroming Wish You Were Here? I'm still rather annoyed I missed that.

lunch998 01-20-2005 07:43 PM

Off topic, but is One of These Days not the sweetest intro of all time?

Riva 01-20-2005 07:47 PM

I think Magicbus found one. I don't know where he posted it though.

And lunch, you are 100 percent correct.

magicbus 01-20-2005 07:51 PM
Off topic, but is One of These Days not the sweetest intro of all time?
I think it's tied with Have A Cigar, but its pretty freakin sweet. I love turning the delay up and playing that.

I don't have a video of that, but if I ever find one I'll let you guys know.

I agree the Have a Cigar intro is great. I was talking about intro to an album.

Riva 01-20-2005 08:01 PM

That is what I meant as well. As a starting song for an album, One Of These Days ownz my pepe.

Sam 01-20-2005 08:20 PM
Off topic, but is One of These Days not the sweetest intro of all time?
It is, that entire song is so heavy. I like the "live at pompeii" version better though. It has better keyboards.

One of these days... one of these days I'm going to cut you into little pieces

guitarded_chuck 01-20-2005 08:32 PM

I never really realised that Nick was actually a good drummer untill I bought Pompeii. He pwns One Of These Days. He's the guy who says "One of these days I'm going to cut you into little pieces" too. Crazy stuff.

How about Roger's scream on Pompeii on Carefull With That Axe Eugene?

He makes it look easy on Pompeii. The first time I heard the song it scared the crap outta me.

Sam 01-20-2005 08:42 PM

Pompeii makes me apreciate PF's ability as musicians more in general. They really had their **** together.

BludgeonySteve 01-20-2005 08:44 PM

When Nick does the drum solo that goes around the stadium, that is trippified I says.
