Yeah I know what you mean. Im just really tired of listening to the crap rock that is continuosly played by our radio stations, bands like Simple plan and Yellow Card. All the teenie boopers listen to them and think that they are hard rock! All i can say to them is go take your poppy punk **** somewhere else! I guess thats what happens when you are a fan of bands like tool.
Oh plus i would love to know where you can listen to that cover song of Aenima!
I'll send it to you. Whats your email address? Or Aim sn. And on other bands like Tool, I remember being in your position. I was like man are there any other bands like this? And to tell you the truth, there aren't really any bands that sound like em. It also depends on what kinda stuff ur into. |
you might like Pink Floyd (if ur not already into them), tool fans also tend to like bands like Radiohead. Mudvayne is pretty good too. Not as meaningful as Flyd and Radiohead though. Oh yeah and Opeth. Took me a while to get used to the death metal growl. But you might like em. That should keep u busy. To jinxed.
|
i dont know, i think u might like pink floyd theyre pretty good. i think they are very original (well from all the bands ive heard...) but yeah check them out.
i listen to them when i just wanna kick back and relax, you know? but yeah pretty good stuff youve probably heard them though but really theres no bands like tool and apc. ^^^^to jinxed |
Deftones. They just came to mind. Tool fans i've met like them too. This is to jinxed.
Has anyone here heard Breaking Benjamin's cover of Ænema? I think it's pretty d.amn good. I can send it to you if you like. Just need your email.
can you send the cover to adamjones_god@yahoo.com i would really appreciate it |
Well, Im gonna brag on myself here, when we cover Aenema we do a **** good job! I think any band that is going to make the commitment to play any complicated masterpiece by Tool as a cover is going to work it to death. We spent a month getting that one song perfected. It is worth it, the crowd goes insane when we cover Tool.
|
Go figure, Radiohead and Tool are my favorite bands.

Oh plus i would love to know where you can listen to that cover song of Aenima!
It's not even that it's crap, for some people it might be really good stuff. It's fine if you like that music too. Maybe you admire that single person for who he/she is, not his band. My point is pretty much about how Tool and APC are solely for the music. They completely on a different level from other bands because they play and feel as a band. The difference between that and pop music is that pop focuses, not on the creativity and evolving ingenuity of their music, but on how the music will affect a certain image or trend. These people are by no means bad; they just aren't in it to revolutionize music. Instead, they sensationalize one part of the band (usually the singer) in order to place a marketable image on the music. This type of music is typically shallow enough to play to everybody, catchy enough to appeal to younger audiences and distract strict parents from the 'maturity' in their lyrics like sex and violence. It's made to sell, made to be played as background noise at some club, movie soundtracks, or high-energy live situations. Producers and the industry are of course partially responsible for the marketed image, but it's true that 'stars' (MTV...) hype their image, not the music. I'm going to extend my lil rant and get into why Tool (APC too) are better than the other bands who don't accept the pop image. I can only describe Tool's music as art. Not only does it contain a variety emotion on several levels, but many songs also have a layered meaning that can be related to almost anything in your life at any time. However, emotion is not enough. There are plenty of emotion-loaded bands today, even some who reject marketable image. A good example would be death metal/ hardcore bands who convey the same emotion through the same dischordant melody again and again. Tool has something else; the music. Admittedly on the shallowest level, the members of Tool are respected and admired among their peers, especially Maynard and Danny. Listen to the flow of many of their songs; you can feel tension, release, energy, on at least four levels. Lastly, Tool has a certain power. Yeah, you shiver too when the opening chords of 'Schism' play. And during the final explosion of 'Push.it"; There isn't any speed bass, metal guitar, or slap bass during any of it, Maynard isn't even screaming, but it conveys so much more emotion and musical energy than any death metal song I have ever heard. There's alot I've missed, but just pull out Tool and compare it to Yellowcard or Briteny Spears, you'll get my meaning. |
I you sign to a label, or are in the music BUSINESS, your saying "i want to be a product" Busisness sell products or services.
Depending on which label you sign to or what branch of business you go into, you will be product x or product y, or product z, etc. All music is not gonna be out to do what we like. I like that. I wouldnt want everyone out trying to push the limits of understanding music and lyrics. When i say I'm a music fan, I'm a music fan. I can listen to top 40 just fine. But at the end of the day i identify with certain genres for my own reasons. I'm no better for this. |
**** you guys really open my eyes up on this topic! Thanks a lot!
Well if it helps i have got Deftones, Tool, APC, Disturbed, NIN, Breaking Benjamin and i admit it i do like a bit of the chillies cus they are just so ****ed catchy! Oh yeah send that cover song to jinxed_nz@hotmail.com tht would be cool! |

Like he said, it doesn't mean you are 'enlightened' if you like Tool music. It has to do with preference. On the surface, many don't like Tool music, but if you do, you will find it goes deeper than other music you listen too (hence the fan base devoted to their meaning). To jinxed: I think the chillies rock myself. Mainstream does not equal money-whore-crap, it might mean they made music alot of people like. Even so, look at RHCP, they are the epitome of 'band'. |

Right a few points...
Thanks 'an underused' just what the doctor ordered :thumb: Expresso...I think the difference between most music and tool is that each musician can be picked out as giving something big to the group (I still don't know which parts of tool songs are bass but i am told Justin does do alot). I can sit and listen to maynard, or danny or adam each carry different melodies and have different songs showcasing their abilities. Jinxed, It really depends on what you're into. At the moment i am having a radiohead phase. But i've been through opeth, dream theater and all sorts. It depends what stuff you like. Don't be too quick to dismiss mainstream bands, some are actually quite good (Is a busted/mcfly fan :upset:) I would like the breaking benjamin cover  robertchapman88 at gmail.com |
the cover isn't bad. i would certainly cheer after hearing it live. yet the vocals im not used to and the words didn't come out very clear in some spots (during the F*ck L. Ron Hubbard part). but musically they did a really good job. 4 of 5

Ya it was unclear in some parts. But I think he got close to Maynard's range in some parts. Musically i thought it was perfect. |

Also check out Thursday, they have amazing lyrics that make you think, and they are very emotional. Post hardcore band, if ur into that kinda stuff. Lately I've been getting into a lot of harcore bands. Also looking at your tastes, I wold def recommend Marilyn Manson. Hes a lot lke Maynard too. Hes all for think for yourself, and tool philosophy stuff. Timothy Leary, Carl Jung, and whatnot. Really cool guy. And his music is awesome. btw- disturbed kicks man!! |
Jinxed, the cover didn't send to you. It could be becuase ur using hotmail, u have ne thing else? I'll invite you to gmail. I need your name though.

i think if you like Tool, you should DEFINITELY check out Nine inch Nails... They're (or He's) a little different, using alot of effects and sort of "techno"-ish but ****, Trent Reznor is crazy....The lyrics are just awesome too..
I also think you should get some Led Zeppelin, seeing as how, In my opinion, they have influenced so much rock its crazy.. They're just amaazing, with one of the greatest guitarists ever..I also think Chevelle is a really good band, you can def see some tool influences in them... Can't forget RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE. < They kick as.sssss... Audioslave kicks major *** too, with almost the same RAGE people, cept 2 guys from Sound Garden...I HIGHLY recommend Audioslave if you like RATM, or even if you dont I also read somewhere that Tool was inspired by Rush...I heard some Rush.. The singer has a really high-ish voice, I'm not sure how influential they were on Tool...but yeah... |
TOOL was inspired mostly by Crimson King, according to the members themselves.

No, seriously, I don't know.
Do you mind? Im only just able to sit down again after the last time. Going back a bit to SFK comment, although im not in a band, I have tried to perfect every little detail of Stinkfist when I play/jam it. I started off basing my pedal set up to get the correct tones and effects in that song. from there i also have been doing the same with The Patient, hence my buying of a wah pedal. Due to this,i've built up a decent array of pedals and have learned how to use them effectively, encorporating it into writing my own material. Thanks once again to Tool! |
Oh, and after just reading (In case any of you fools are not regularly checking toolband.com)
This months newsletter contains some more insight into the Parabol/Parabola video. Shows some interesting links between the philosophy behind many Final fantasy games as well as Tool ideals. Could it be that everything that I enjoy in my life is somehow interconnected in someway? |
