My roommate doesn't like the growls because he says it's "such a typical way to growl." That would be fine except what he considers to be "un-typical" are emo band screaming, which is what he likes.
My roommate=dumbass. I hate my roommate when it comes to musical taste. It's because he's so freakin' narrow. He just listens to heavier and softer varieties of emo music and pop-rock and punk and thinks that means he listens to a "wide variety of things." He doesn't listen to anything made before 1990, and a wide genre vocabulary is sorely lacking. |
I lately converted one of my mates to Opeth, and Dream Theater, how about that, but I have a really hard time making my mates listen to them, and like them

Only stuff I can play on bass right now from opeth is pretty much most of ****ation. Though, To Bid You Farewell is rough and I'm trying Bleak...though, I suck :upset:
|
I've tried letting a few of my friends listen to them and most of them promply hand the headphones back to me. Not very open minded people.
|
I've shown Opeth to my younger brother and two of his friends. About 6 months later they asked me to join them to start an Opeth tribute band.
There's something for everyone in Opeth's music. |
My friends got into Opeth pretty readily, but that's because I sort of weaned them on In Flames first, so they were used to the vocals.
|
They can't get past the vocals, so it ends there.
I can't stand death metal vocals etiher-except Opeth of course. |

Heh, I got used to the vocals from randomly buying Morningrise, and then listening to the music and being like "OMGZ THIS OWNS, BUT THE SINGER IZ GHEY," then came the clean singing, I listened for a couple of days straight cause I found it so amazing, and I got used to the vocals.... this was in October. |

It took me a while to get into the vocals as well. Funny thing is I had the almost the exact same thoughts. I'm glad they helped me apreciate that vocal style, it opened my mind to a whole new world of music. |

Yeah, if it weren't for me and my friends going to FYE and seeing who would buy the best randomly picked CD, I wouldn't be listening to a lot of the stuff I'm into now. |
it was my teacher who suggested i listen to some opeth. He gave me a burnt copy of still life, and i put it away and didn't listen to it because i thought it sucked, then i randomly started putting it in the cd player to give it another shot, and bam, i brought the real still life a day later :p

Yea same. When I first heard them, they didnt do anything for me at all. Now theyre my favourite band :p |
I think it was actually Akerfeldt's performance on the latest Ayreon album that REALLY pushed me towards Opeth. It's a funny part of human nature, that if you hear something in a song you don't like, chances are you'll just dismiss it all right away and ignore the parts you ordinarily might have liked. I think this was what happened the first time I listened to Opeth; it was just too much for me, and I didn't like the growling. When I was exposed to Akerfeldt without Opeth, just singing, I suddenly realized that there was more to this guy than I noticed at first. Plus, watching him go from singing to growling on the Ayreon DVD was very impressive.
I think that alot of people don't like DM vocals because of the negative stereotypes associated with the style and because they confuse it with blind screaming. I still don't like the kind of scream your guts out sort of untrained thing that some metal and hardcore bands do, it just sounds....painful. With death and even black metal, you can tell that they actually know what they're doing. |
Yea^^^^^^^A *lot of those screamo and Hardcore bands have no guidance of their "screaming or growling". That is another reason why these type of vocals are dismissed as bad to a lot of people.
*by a lot, I mean all. |
poorly controlled and overdosed vocals suck,
a vocalist must know when to shut up, and when to sing. and Mikeal is my favorite vocalist, he's just awesome |
So think he'll stay demonic for the new album or possibly go back a little to Morningrise style?
|
let it be the demonic voice he uses now,
back in the days I prefered his old growls, and couldn't get used to his newer. his new stuff sounds way more powerfull, for example blackwater park ( the song) or the end of wreath, with the dubble mixed vocals, the death vocals mixed with black vocals, that's one of the most awesome vocal parts ever done by Opeth IMO |

It was a needless generalization, but the fact that you had to mention a relatively unknown band to counter it shows that it must be largely true. I loved the vocals on Orchid and Morningrise and once I got Blackwater Park, it took a bit of getting used to. The music between those albums is so different also. Makes me wonder what this next stuff is going to sound like, because they could go in a lot of different directions. |

You can't just say a whole genre is horrible. |

If you recall the post that you replied to, it was regarding the vocal styles of the genre, not the genre. Anyway, I'd like to keep this thread about Opeth rather than arguments with posters I have nothing against. |

det.........you mentioned an Ayreon dvd..............this can't be a concert can it? more info? :)
|
Yes, I am curious too, enlighten me.
|
and while we're at it, any updates on the opeth album? i know they went in to record about a week ago, any news on how its going?
|
No BAND or GROUP sticks out to me that would last except for RHCP, but one vocalist does which is corey taylor from slipknot and stone sour.
|
get the f*ck out of this thread and into the right one

Checked their site, just says that they went in for recording, and then something about the producer of "A Call To The Irons," being confirmed as dead from the Tsunami R.I.P. he truly produced one of the greatest Maiden Tribute's ever. |
